Li Ion batteries can burn quite hot if damaged, look at all the "My cellphone exploded and burned my ass" posts.

Device could simply have shorted or the battery was damage...

Greetings,

Thanks for all the posts, I thoroughly enjoyed them - was particularly fond of the "I wish I knew before Xmas" comment. Anyway, all is well - talked to Sonic and they are researching the Lithium Ion issue - for those of you enthusiasts that may have remembered the 5300 debacle - these batteries have been haunting Apple ever since.

see http://www.1esc.com/Applefusion.html

For those of you noobs... a few 5300's used at Apple actually burst into flames due to problems with then-new Lithium Ion batteries made by Sony (earning the 5300 the nickname "Hindenbook", after the Hindenburg disaster).

Lawsuits, nah. I am just glad we didn't have any hospital incidents. The responsibility issue passionately positioned by the "In Apple We Trust" guys, is academic - for even Apple would want to know if they are selling something in their stores potentially hazardous to their customers. Granted, a large portion of the weight falls on Sonic, but even my company bears the responsibility of making sure what we offer works, let alone not bursting into flames, otherwise we wouldn't be in business as long as we have.

Now for those of you that don't follow this thought...

Suppose you purchased candy from a store, you give it to your children, but as luck would have it you noticed it was filled with ground glass. So who would your first call to be? Really... Be honest... The store, right?

Why...

Because of the proverbial "Heads Up factor!" You wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. Now let's say that you returned the candy and their response was "here is another candy" - kinda - not the response you expected...

So, the word goes out to make sure there is a consciousness surrounding this product.

No indignation, no demands, no lawsuits, no kidding...

So - whether you wrap yourself around the Steve Jobs flag, or are just a consumer - the "Heads Up is there".

Hope Everyone has a Happy New Year!

WOW!!!!!!! Glad to hear everyone's okay. I smell a lawsuit! Seriously, sue the company who made that product. Apple is not the manufacturer, so don't go after them. :hides:

Not the intent... Just a Heads Up.. Thanks though...

Thanks, noted

Glad to hear you got it outside safely, and everyone is alright.

I'm sure Apple will give you your money back (or atleast a store gift card), but keep in mind, these speakers are in no way made by Apple, so don't blame them.

Sounds like an isolated case to me, it must have been a bad battery, (or faulty wiring). As for other people who have this, I wouldn't be too worried.

FYI: Next time you have a burning battery on your porch, I recommend using an ABC fire extinguisher, in some cases water will just make things worse.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, after the respectful decline for another set of speakers. Isolated, maybe, but repeatable - yes. Bad battery may be the theme... Perhaps someone may not be as lucky as we were... If we didn't see this within the minutes of the occurance, an ABC fire extinguisher wouldn't have made a difference...

Firstly. Take some photos of your walls and your house. Tell them where your kid was playing with it, and when it smoked, which door you went out, etc. At minimum you can expect store credit. You may get a small bonus for what it did to your walls.

Good Idea

Interestingly enough, this information is falling on deaf ears in the corporate arena. It's a very bitter pill to swallow and probably preferred not taken at all. Besides, the only bonus we can expect is awareness. Integrity exists in the hearts of people, not in the companies they serve.
