I'd consider it if it tracked the same data as the watch for steps, heratrate, etc. to track exercise and activity; especially if it had really good battery life. Such a device would allow me to wear a mechanical watch while still tracking activity.

Apple is developing a smart ring that could potentially rival products like the Oura Ring and Samsung Galaxy Ring, according to the leaker and prototype collector known as "Kosutami."

The latest Oura Ring 5 starts at $399​

Apple has toyed with the idea of a smart ring for several years, as indicated by several patents, and there have been previous rumors that Apple has investigated a wearable for the finger to track a user's biometrics.

Reports dating back to 2024 said Apple was weighing up the idea as a viable expansion of its wearables lineup – something that may appeal to people who would prefer a biometric accessory that's more inconspicuous than an Apple Watch.

Rumors have petered out over the last couple of years, but now it seems that the popularity of the latest Oura Ring has caught Apple's attention, if the latest rumor is anything to go by. However, no other details were provided by the leaker.

The original Oura Ring was released by Finnish health technology company Oura back in 2015. The device collects activity, heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep data, and transmits it via Bluetooth to the Oura app.

Now in it's fifth iteration, the latest Oura Ring is a lot smaller than previous versions and boasts new health-monitoring capabilities including blood pressure trend detection, nighttime breathing analysis, and tools for GLP-1 medication tracking.

Instead of all these "rumoured" products the question people should be asking is why are they delaying every new product as we haven't had any innovation for a long time now. Is this the legacy of Cook where Apple basically works one day a week because we don't have to work to hard. Get on with it FFS and make things again rather than sell updates !

For people who are serious about tracking their health, would they prefer the more accurate (than the Oura I assume?) and more capable Apple Watch?

I would trade my Apple Watch Ultra 2 for a ring on day 1. I don’t want the full go Apple Watch, I want a fitness tracker that plays nicely in the ecosystem.

On the other hand, I don't like the 7 big massive tech companies swallowing nearly every successful medium sized growing tech company going.

The recent rumours makes me think that it can’t be that apple are that lost but with the launch of the Vision Pro and the endless iPhone since the 11 .. it could be …jobs was not about what people want but about what they need and most of the time we don’t know until it’s been shown … so no to the ring no to the AirPods camera the smart glass the camera on my chest the HomePod with a screen for HomeKit and all that crap that didn’t bring luck to the competition anyway or we would all have it … so many rumoured products and nothing …

The Apple Watch needs time to charge often (for me at night), whereas my Oura Ring 5 lasts 8 days without needing a charge.

Yes please. Since I only wear real watches I refuse to get an Apple Watch. A smart ring in the Apple ecosystem would do nicely.

Apple should have brought out 2 rings some time ago. A Pro version that would compete with Aura feature for feature and a cheaper version whose sole purpose is to track sleep functions while your Apple Watch is recharging at night. It could sacrifice battery life, GPS functions, possibly other features but do a decent job at tracking sleep. When combined with an Apple watch this would give you 24 X 7 health tracking

IIRC, in the patents, Apple was mostly positioning the ring as an other-device controller with roll/tap/point, where you could just point the ring's head/jewel at a device to make it the selected device, then control it via roll/tap commands. There was also some gaming/vr stuff too, where you could wear multiple rings to make your hands the controllers. There may have been NFC (wallet/key) stuff too, can't remember. These patents made the ring seem like a $99-category device; where people could feasibly have multiples. There were some patents about health-tracking as well of course.

I got the impression that once the health rings came out, the category was defined (high-end) and it did not align at all with Apple's vision. So rather than release something 'against the grain', they just did nothing. Personally, I am very interested in the other-device-controller vision, but they are likely pivoting to talk-to-AI for this instead now.

It's clever tech, but unless it can do something useful to me that my Apple Watch cannot, then I'll stick with the watch format. Those rings, even though improved, are somewhat bulky.

It's better for sleep tracking and some say that it's more accurate for heart rate tracking than the Apple Watch because of the veins in the finger. I wear both because the watch is better for activity tracking.

I never managed to justify the watch. I could probably buy the ring just like I bought my first AirTag "Just in case". You then realise how good it is and consider buying more or the future versions.

I would be interested. My fiance recently ditched her Apple Watch in favour of her mechanical watch, but she still wanted to track her health metrics. She got an Oura 5 and it looks much less bulky than the last ones.

I’m considering it now as I love mechanical watches and want to move away from having my phone strapped to my wrist.

Same here. Switched from the watch to an Oura5 which works exceptionally well. Allows me to wear different normal watches.
However, I would prefer a Ring product from Apple for simplified app eco system integration and move away from a subscription model of the Oura. And as someone said already, those Rin products last for days on a charge, which is convenient instead of charging it in the morning during the shower. One less tech item i have to think about.

You're not the target audience for this if you don't understand the use case for it. Non-watch fitness trackers are gaining popularity and Apple is rarely first to a segment. Smart watches existed before the AW too.

Apple released the Apple Watch after the smartwatch became a thing. It released the AirTags after such "tags" became a thing. And the Vision Pro, that unnecessary piece of bulk, was released after Meta's attempt at VR glasses. If Apple releases a smart ring, then it becomes just another product concept that Apple is copying/following the competition.

Long gone are the days in which Apple released the iPhone, and made the smartphone a must-have without the keyboard; in which it released the MacBook Air, showing that laptops do not need a CD-ROM drive; and in which it released the iPad and showed the world how to make tablets. Now Apple just releases its own version of what everybody else is doing. No longer inventing new categories or redefining the ones already existing.

I would. I considered rings from other manufacturers, but no way in hell am I "subscribing" to anything, which they all seem to want you to do to get access to your own data. Just send it straight from the ring to Apple Health, no need to involve your own servers and ongoing costs, it's not hard!

They've been sitting on their hands especially when it comes to silicon R&D and maximizing performance and efficiency. They really should consider designing their own chips, which could allow them to significantly undercut their competition in a number of ways. So much so that they might be able even release an affordable MacBook that disrupts the current market of janky plastic PCs and Chromebooks.

No. A ring can't show me the time, upcoming meetings, or weather at a glance... unless it has a display of its own which would likely be too small.
