One thing everyone has to keep in mind here..

Apple is not going to make these and not get their usual huge margins.

In fact, I think they find standalone displays to be a major PITA and will likely charge even more than expected partially due to that.

They will not make these with a goal to make them "accessible to everyone"
It's going to be a pricey upgrade to go first party monitor with Apple.

(btw: I would line up to bash myself and eat so much crow if wrong -- I am literally dying to be wrong on this. Under Tim Cook's Apple, I don't think I will be wrong.)
This is the most astute observation I’ve seen on this thread. Paraphrasing Marco Arment, Apple will release an awesome display, it will cost 40% more than people expect/want, and everyone will buy it anyway.

They will also not release a display for which they see that there is already an adequate solution on the market. Another reason they won’t release the existing 27” iMac screen as a stand-alone display is that if they wanted to do it, they would have done so by now. That product is easy.

I doubt we’ll get a display based on the 24” iMac’s screen, but the 4.5k resolution gives it just enough differential from existing 4K screens to make it possible. Expect it to retail at about $1000.

We likely will get a 27” 5k display based on the new iMac’s screen. It will have the same specs as rumored: mini-LED, 120 hz, ProMotion. It will list for $2500, if not $3000. It will provoke two reactions: people who will scream to the high hills about Apple making a huge mistake pricing it out of their personal budget, and people who are extremely pleased because they recognize it as a bargain relative to existing monitors. (4K mini-LED 32” monitors regularly list for $3k-4k.)

A fully loaded Mini with a new Apple display could be an iMac killer in the making. That’s why I think any new iMac Pro will carry a hefty price tag along with massive performance.
A fully loaded mini with a new Apple display is an iMac (just more expensive and less elegant).

I've been using a Dell Ultrasharp for a little while now (maybe about a year?), and I like it, I guess, but I miss the crispness of the MacBook Pro's retina screen. I'd get an LG, but those are nowhere to be found, either. These new displays need to get here soon!

Both LG 4k and 5k are now back in stock at my local store and online store in Canada. I wonder what that means? They had been unavailable (espc. the 4K) for the better half of 2021...

The thought of paying the Apple premium makes me sick. With the hundreds upon hundreds of display options available, you would think I wouldn't have to worry about it.

But looking for a large (32+ inch) display that's even close to Apple's retina screens and LG Ultrafine 4k and 5k displays is mind numbing. You can find the size, but the resolution is lower than a 14" MacBook Pro. You can find the size and resolution is good, but the brightness is only 250-300. You find a 450-500 brightness display, but there's only HDMI and Display Port connection and no Thunderbolt... Then, as if it weren't difficult enough just finding the right specs, when you do and you read the reviews—it's nothing but complaints about light leaks, etc.

I hope Apple does release a 32" display. I know it will be retina resolution, I know it will be Thunderbolt. I know the brightness will be 400 or higher. And I know there will be little to no chance that's it's a poor quality panel with light leaks. Unfortunately, I also know that I'll probably pay close to $2,000 if not more. But I also know I won't have any regrets.

Well, I've got good news and bad news for you.

I have on good authority that within the next month, you'll be able to purchase exactly such a display from Apple. It's 32", retina quality, more nits than you can shake a stick at. It will be an absolutely gorgeous display.

The bad news? It will cost $6000. $5000, if you don't include the stand.

I feel like there's a fair number of people who are misunderstanding Apple's intentions in re-entering the display market. They are obviously doing so reluctantly. They are doing so because there are Mac users whose display needs are not being met—at any price—by the current market. They are not going to make a display on par with the LG 5K or any other display on the market because they are perfectly content to tell users that if that's the display you want, go purchase that display. They are not interested in competing on price. They are interested in making things that don't exist.

You want retina quality? At 32", that's 6K. 27"? 5K. 23.5"? 4.5K. Those are the monitors that Apple is going to release. They are also highly unlikely to release anything that is of lower quality than the displays on their MacBook Pros. They will be awesome, and they will get their 40% margins on them, if not more, because they can. They won't exist elsewhere, and their prices will reflect that.

I will be happy to be wrong, but I fully expect Apple's rumored 5K display to cost at least $2000, if not $3000. A lot of people will complain about that, but it will actually be good price compared to what else is on the market. (Again, non-retina 4K miniLED displays list for $3000 and higher.) It will be too much for me to pay personally, but that doesn't make it an unfair price.

Good point. The apple "puck" mouse was released in 1998 and hated by most, but the next Apple mouse (the Pro Mouse) wasn't released until 2005. So 7 years for the development of a relatively simple thing like a mouse.

Putting that into context, we're only 3 years into when Apple supposedly kicked of development of their new monitor line that's discussed in this article. If the R&D timelines remains similar we might not see these new monitors for another few years. All smoke, no fire.
No, the Apple Pro Mouse (the oblong one) came out in 2000, just 2 years after the 1998 puck mouse. That’s a reasonable timeframe for feedback, redesign and manufacturing.

We don’t really know when Apple started designing their new montors. Considering how many other devices they have been redesigning in the last couple of years, I’m not surprised if the monitor is not the highest priority for them. I do hope that they bring them out this year and that some of them are actually reasonably prices (in Apple terms).

I just looked at the LG, and I noticed that it doesn't have an ethernet port in it. I've got a Dell Ultrasharp, and it's got the ethernet port in it (which I can't immediately use because my office won't wire ethernet back here because it's an addition to an older building.

Maybe no on wants ethernet ports anymore, and I know dongles are an option, but now I wonder if this dell is completely sufficient for my needs since I don't do audio and video on it...

Supply chains for screens have been heavily disrupted over the last 6+ months. Most likely it doesn't mean anything other than LG have been able to source more of their components and manufacture more screens.

I see the same here in the US. Also, the low end LG 24UD58-B 24” 4K is in stock on Amazon as well as the Mac specific UltraFine models.

It probably means the lack of stock was a supply chain issue.
