This is the most astute observation I’ve seen on this thread. Paraphrasing Marco Arment, Apple will release an awesome display, it will cost 40% more than people expect/want, and everyone will buy it anyway. One thing everyone has to keep in mind here..
Apple is not going to make these and not get their usual huge margins.
In fact, I think they find standalone displays to be a major PITA and will likely charge even more than expected partially due to that.
They will not make these with a goal to make them "accessible to everyone"
It's going to be a pricey upgrade to go first party monitor with Apple.
(btw: I would line up to bash myself and eat so much crow if wrong -- I am literally dying to be wrong on this. Under Tim Cook's Apple, I don't think I will be wrong.)
They will also not release a display for which they see that there is already an adequate solution on the market. Another reason they won’t release the existing 27” iMac screen as a stand-alone display is that if they wanted to do it, they would have done so by now. That product is easy.
I doubt we’ll get a display based on the 24” iMac’s screen, but the 4.5k resolution gives it just enough differential from existing 4K screens to make it possible. Expect it to retail at about $1000.
We likely will get a 27” 5k display based on the new iMac’s screen. It will have the same specs as rumored: mini-LED, 120 hz, ProMotion. It will list for $2500, if not $3000. It will provoke two reactions: people who will scream to the high hills about Apple making a huge mistake pricing it out of their personal budget, and people who are extremely pleased because they recognize it as a bargain relative to existing monitors. (4K mini-LED 32” monitors regularly list for $3k-4k.)
