Ubiquity could build their app and hardware to support putting the card into Wallet, they just haven't. It's been asked for many times on their support forums, but so far no commitment to do it (it's apparently difficult because Apple requires a higher level of security for the authentication than what Ubiquity has build so far). HID (one of the largest access control vendors) has done that, so employees at companies that use their system can add their badge to wallet to just wave the phone at the reader to unlock.

I find it particularly annoying because it takes 2-3 seconds before the reader detects my phone. vs the instant that a proximity card usually takes.

These days i've resorted to having the physical card in a slot on my phone case's wallet cover.

I've got public transport cards in my apple wallet; that's no issue.
But my corporate office uses a specific app that lets me open doors with the app. There's no entry in my wallet for it. As another user pointed out; the current workaround on ios uses bluetooth instead of nfc
You can use wallet for these cards. Hotels - Hyatt I believe is one - do it today. BMW already supports digital keys using nfc in their app or via apple wallet. Apple has dev docs on how to do it.

Yes, it takes entitlements but it is doable today to add these to wallet. Regardless of wallet card entitlemetnts any app could read and write nfc so they could use their own apps today. BMW already supports digital keys using nfc in their app or via apple wallet.

This change really doesn’t change anything other than allow non-wallet / non-apple pay access to the secure enclave for payment cards.

All of those require Apple’s blessing to be added into the Apple wallet. It’s not like anybody can make an app and put a card in there.
No one said entitlements were not required to be in the wallet. Only that it is possible today. And any app can send / receive access to nfc wishing their own apps without any entitlements. Other than payment cards obviously.

What do you mean Google Pay is largely unknown? Plenty of people use the Google Wallet, or the Samsung version.

In the end it is just contactless payments, that infrastructure in Europe is just so much further than in the US, and it is everywhere. The bank cards already covered it. So it is just an added bonus to not have to open your wallet. It is just a standard.
Yea, so much fun every time to enter your pin when paying a value over 50 Euro. Well done…BS.
Very nice, to open your banking app for doing a paying procedure.
No thanks! Apple Pay does it as i should be. Quick, save and with comfort.

Switching banks isn’t some easy non trivial process. I have a checking, savings and 2 credit cards with my bank. Just switching all that elsewhere would be difficult. Closing credit cards and reapplying elsewhere also dings your credit report
It depends what region you live in. In the EU and UK it is as easy as opening another account and they will take car of all your direct debits, standing orders, even can notify your employer for your salary. Credit Cards, Savings aren't relevant in that context. But even so, credit card companies give incentives all the time for switching cards, and that won't have an effect on your credit report.

Is that still a thing? I think that is about 4 years out of date...

Most Americans do not know contactless or tap to pay is safe for card payments. The use of physical cards is higher than use of mobile phones to pay at a credit card machine in USA.

Today, some of them today still are surprised when they see someone use a mobile phone at a credit card machine to pay.
Which is sad really, considering how common it is to let your physical card go out of view in the US. The security of that is so much worse than contactless payments. Seems like some education is in order.

Hopefully an app developer need NOT sign any crazy agreement or pay any fees to be able to add a ”virtual NFC card” to the apple wallet for use as the end user see’s fit (think using a virtual NFC card on your phone instead of a physical NFC card to open things or trigger things around your house)?
