I disagree entirely and think you have things mixed up. I meant uninformed as people who don't know the difference between C2D and i5, not as someone looking to "get attention." There are plenty of uninformed people who use their computers for work purposes, but know little to nothing about current computer technology. While I agree that smart people are in the minority, smart people don't throw thousands of dollars at something that doesn't warrant it. Even considering intrinsic value, $2349 for a 15" i7 high-res antiglare MBP is psychotic.

you're right.. I just kinda lumped them all into the same category.

I agree, the price definitely makes me think twice.. but I've considered all the alternatives and can't find anything that really steps up to the level of a MBP in terms of having all the good stuff where it counts(screen quality, solid build, power, battery life, input, functionality etc) .. When I look at Dell Latitude/Precisions or Lenovo Thinkpads I also think those don't warrant the price they ask either and they come very close to Apple pricing..

So I'd rather spend a little more and get the machine I'll be happiest with instead of regretting my purchase later. They also tend to hold value better in the long run compared to most computers which makes some people feel better.

I don't buy into the whole "Apple tax" or "you belong to an exclusive club" crap. It's a stupid computer at the end of the day.

Apple has always been overpriced and what is happening now is that with the iPhone, the iPad, and to some extent the iPod, they are accruing more customers into their base who would not have looked to their computer offerings otherwise. Hell, most don't even still. But it's a double-edge sword for Apple. On one hand, they increase their customer base and revenue but on the other hand, more voices are going to be heard about prices.

For me personally, I wouldn't care so much about the prices if I knew Apple gave a crap about their computer line. When Steve Jobs says the upcoming updates to the MacBook Pros are going to be revolutionary, I don't want a component or two to be updated.

(addressing the thread starter) The new MacBook do for the most part meet your requirements for resolution and hdmi. You wanted full HD resolution, but the problem is that full hd 1080p is 16:9 and MacBooks uses 16:10 aspect ratio displays. So the closest resolutions are 1680x1050 which is now an option on the 15" and 1920x1200 which is the resolution on the 17". Were you expecting 1200p on the 15" or apple to redesign the MacBooks to 16:9?
Then on the new MacBooks you can get a $10 adapter which will pass both video and audio from the mini displayport to hdmi.
Finally it will be a long wait for quad cores. Apple wants the MacBooks to be mobile without having to find the nearest outlet, and the current quad core laptops offer terrible battery life. I would guess not more than an hour or two unless it sits idle.
