As a former Apple employee, they sometimes will replace a phone or other product this easily when there is a known issue with it. It's their way of taking a problem device and replacing it with a new one.

Since you were a former Employee of apple, Does apple really keep everyone even employees in the dark until launch of a product, or do you all have a little knowledge like " yeah "Apple Product" is coming out but dont know details?

Yes. Only the design/engineering/QA teams know and mess with the actual products. No one below that chain ever knows what's going on.

They really don't tell us anything. We have to wait until the announcement like everyone else. We even get promotional displays sent to the stores the day before to be put up overnight.

I would say that designers aren't really involved unless it a "redesign." It's going to be the test engineers that really work on the problem. I can go even further if the issue is system level then Applications department will get involved. And if this is an hardware problem Apple isn't the one to fix the problem. Apple does not have the resources to fix the issues if it's hardware. The supplier will have to verify the issue first then try to "fix the problem." That's the reason why Apple works with large companies for their components because they don't have to deal with the "issues."

I was talking about the process when the phone hadn't even been announced yet.

I know this directly from a source who works with jonny ive.

You can definitely get another for 199. Take it in to apple, and tell them what happened. You might get lucky and get another for free. I did.

I got a appointment. Thanks.
Do they always replace it for $199 or does it depend on the phones damage? Because I thought if you break your phone hey charge you $599 for a new one

I'm pretty sure as long as you have something you can turn into them they'll replace it for 199. The full retail would be if you lost or had yours stolen, and there was nothing they could repair or take in trade.

When I took my iPhone 4 in for a shattered back, the genius first said he'd replace it for the 199 Out of Warranty fee. I sort of complained about having to pay that for this phone that shattered when I was wearing the recommended bumper and the glass was supposedly from a helicopters windshield. He then agreed to go ahead and replace the phone at no cost to me.
