Other Apple is slowing down older iPhones based on battery wear level [MERGED]

Weird. I was charging my battery (while backing up, before taking it for the battery replacement) and now it's ready 1127MHz, which is still down from 1400MHz. Not sure what is going on, unless the app is not accurate??

In the reddit thread people have mentioned that the CPU clock goes up when connected to a charger and gradually decreases after being unplugged and used.

I feel like it's a mixture of them fixing the problem with iPhone 6 batteries and random shutdowns that they had and planned obsolesce.

This is now also happening on iPhone 7 series models and it is remained to be seen wether 8 and X Series are affected because they have just been released and their batteries are still in pristine condition.

So it has been confirmed to be happening on the iPhone 7? How about the 7 Plus? This is very disconcerting as I intend for my iPhone 7 Plus to be my last iPhone for a while. My warranty runs out in a matter of a week.

Yes, iPhone 7 users have reported the CPU being throttled on older batteries.

The best thing you can do is pray Apple makes this "feature" an option in the iOS menu or replace your battery every 1-2 years depending on your usage.

If this actually can be proven it should be a big lawsuit.
Cause people with devices that the battery degrades over a few years do experience slow downs and bad performance intentionally done by the manufacturer.
Having no idea that if they replace their battery their device will run much better. But if Apple does that and doesn't tell anyone about it in order for people to get frustrated with bad performance and slowdowns to force their hand to buy new iphones.
Then that is very bad IMO.

I've been moving back and forth between iOS and Android for quite awhile so will be sticking with Android awhile while preserving my battery on my 7. Last iPhone for me as between this and the price of an X just seems like a cash grab and a screwing of the customer by a mega rich corporation becoming greedier. I'll be voting with my wallet. With the pixel introduction by Google, Android has finally become stable, smooth and otherwise fantastic. Not to mention customizations.

If It’s around 80% capacity, replace it.. My 6S is over two years old and battery capacity is 93%, it performs wonderfully. If it needed a battery, the cost is negligible compared to the stellar performance I’ve had for two+ years.

Are you running iOS 10.2.1 or later? Have you checked your benchmarks?

My battery life has been sub-par, and performance is slow. I had Apple check it over, and they reported "all is well." I assumed that meant iOS 11 (which they asked me to upgrade to, in their first go-round) simply required more horsepower than what my 6 could deliver.

Instead, it turns out "because of a battery issue we weren't willing to spend the money to recall, we throttled back your phone" which they didn't tell me, and let me assume I needed to upgrade.

Please let me know which car company purposely slowed down my car through an automotive firmware update, to compensate for an aging battery (said battery, btw, is user replaceable unlike the iPhone).

I really don't care about the "replace your battery for $75 after 2 years" mantra. It's the rest of it that stinks.

btw -- I'm more prone to think this whole deal is Apple dodging a complete battery recall across the 6 and 6s line, and sloppy thinking, than pro-active planned obsolesce, but either way, it's not very comforting.

I'm going tonight for a new battery -- if they do a recall, I would hope they make good on mine. If they don't, well, I'm not in the mood for a full iPhone upgrade right now, or perhaps anytime in the future. This might be my last iPhone, depending on how they respond -- both what they say and what they do. If I can get another 6-12 months on this phone, that gives me time for a trial of Android. I've been avoiding moving to Android, but this kind of the last straw. Just so steamed right now.

That's a really hefty drop. I'm tempted to check my iPhone 6 as well.

Though I'm quite sure more of my slow-down issues are because of iOS input-blocking driving me up the wall.

Does Apple usually use quality batteries? Old Samsung batteries were know to go to crap in a year or so. Everyone always told me an iPhone was good for 3-4 years. That was one of the big selling points to me.

I had to change the battery after 2 years of usage on both my iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 Plus because the wear level was so high that the phone would barely make it to lunch time.

Uhh because when people do bring up similar experiences, they get shouted down as being Samsung shills, anti-Apple, etc...

The rest know nothing of tech, and go with the slow flow until they replace a perfectly good phone, that has been unknowingly throttled by Apple.

I haven't run GB4 on my iPhone 7 before, but I just did and got:

3538 single core
5965 multi-core

Clearly my iphone 7, which was bought just after launch, has not been throttled. The battery is probably fairly low on the cycle count, though. Running iOS 11.2.

I said since people aren’t aware that Apple is cutting performance when the battery is going bad, Apple should have a popup warning about the performance loss and to have the the battery replaced.. They love using popups to get you to update, they should have the same persistent popup for this

Just an F Y I for those with iOS 11 - the only way to see charge cycles is via coconutBattery on Mac or some paid Windows App that reads your phone after you plug it into your computer. IOS 10 and before - apps could see this.


I know this, I’m going to be keeping my 8+ for a very long time. I just got an Apple Watch so I probably won’t be leaving Apple anytime soon but when it does come time to update these devices in a few years, if Apple keeps up this “Must make billions at the expense of our customers” attitude, I’ll gladly purchase a Pixel. My work let me use a Dell laptop so I won’t be buying a Mac (not like I could afford one) anytime soon.

I’ve used a Pixel and imo, Apple is still superior - hardware wise it is really hard to beat - but that may be changing as we see here. The price is sure hard to justify. 2 years is a long time, so we’ll see where Apple is at.

I'd say 99% of users do not do that, or even know how to do it or have an idea of what their core CPU should perform like.

They should definitely make this public and hiding it like that is what makes it even more shady and illegal to slow down your device for whatever reason without the user having an idea if or what is causing it.

Where are you getting that screen? I've had Battery Life for years and lost that data with either the iOS 11 or iOS 10 upgrade, I forget which. I just poked around and can't find anywhere with that info. What version of iOS are you running?

That and there were a fair number of users with the 6s and 6s+ that had battery issues. My wife was one of them. We’d be waking in the park doing Ingress and her 6s+ would shut off quite consistently. We’d boot it back up and the 40-60% battery it had would be at 8%. We took it to Apple and they said there was nothing wrong with it even though their tester app failed to complete 3 times.

I do think that it didn’t have a majority of users having problems though. That’s why only 500 on a reddit forum are voicing their opinion - I know my 6s+ was near perfect and most likely out of the many millions that had 6s+ phones, theirs were too. Instead of fixing a problem that it saw, it looks like Apple tried to sweep the small % that did have a problem under the rug - my wife’s iPhone 6s+ one of them.

For a company like Apple this is inexcusable. Especially when it is the most expensive phone brand out there.

Many of my friends with iPhone 6 and 6S had the same problem.
They were calling me asking if I could replace their battery but I didnt want to risk opening it and buying 3rd party batteries to replace.
And Apple would not replace the battery for free.
They wanted to charge them $80 and were telling them mind as well upgrade to the newest iPhone instead of spending money on fixing the old one that is slow and outdated.
Totally shady since they knew their batteries were crap and instead of replacing all of them for free they were slowing down peoples devices on purpose to get them to buy a new iPhone or pay $80 out of pocket to replace their defective batteries.
