OK, I'm coming back with some more clarity on the situation, after doing some testing.

I fired up my Catalina VM in Fusion, and checked for updates.

The Device Support update was there, the Safari 15, and security updates were also there.

Back on the host of 11.6 no updates showing up at this point. I am wondering if it's because I installed iOS 13, and it did it's component update, and that's the same that's included in this update being offered today. That's the only thing I can think of. I checked System information under installations, and I didn't see anything referencing it being installed.

I also looked for a physical installer from apple to grab, but none was found. So, at this point, I am thinking I may not require the update on this particular configuration. At this point, as mentioned above, I don't have any new Apple devices beyond my iPhone 12 Pro Max from last year, so unless I need this to deal with iOS 15 itself in general, then I really don't need it at this time anyway. The other thing I'll mention is, when I connected my iPad Air 2, to the mac to update it to iPadOS 15 on release date, it just worked, so maybe I have what I need already. Who knows, at this point Apple isn't as predictable as they used to be, at least for some things.

It showed up on my MBP running 11.6, but not the iMac. The only difference was the version of Xcode installed. The MBP hadn't been upgraded to version 13 yet. The only other thing I can think of at this point, is It automatically installed, but I never received any "installed updates" notifications. So, at this point is there anything I can do to see if the update is already installed on the iMac ? BTW, MBP is late 2013, 13". iMac is late 2015, 27"

Good. This presumably explains why when I tried to restore my iPhone 13 via my Mac this past weekend (to get the iOS 15 update they released that supposedly fixed a few iOS 15 bugs I didn't want to have to deal with — Apple Watch stuff, Apple Music stuff, etc.), it just refused to work.

My restore from an iPhone 12 to 13 Pro worked fine on Friday, without the patch.

I reinstalled my iPhone 13 Pro Max on the release date with the ipsw (like every new iPhone). I got no error or something. My question is: Is it fine? Or do I need to do it again cause of the new update?

I don't think so. If it worked without error, you should be fine. It might fix things only for people who couldn't get it to restore at all.

Where did you find those? I tried looking on Apple's download support page. I was able to download them both directly from those links, and install Thanks!

Where can we find the log of updates already installed?

This update is not showing up yet (CT).
I was wondering the same thing. Like how you can view installed updates in Windows. Not sure you can view that info for macOS.

I’ve got one for you guys with regards to device support. Running a MacBook Pro (DG 2015, 2.5ghz) iPhone 8. I get really spotty sync over Wi-Fi and usb for some reason. Phone disappears while syncing over Wi-Fi and rapidly reconnects.
Tried all the usual fixes - reset location on iPhone, new genuine cables, usbd restarts but it’s been like that on and off since Catalina and occasionally on high sierra. Anyone got any magic tricks, or is it a case of it is what it is?

just installed it on my late 2011 MacBook Pro running Catalina via dosdudes patch and installed in less than 3 minutes.

Apple engineers have a lot of work to do after all this bug news.

Maybe too many of the important ones are working from home, or distracted halfway out the door with fat Apple $tock early retirements?

Apple seems to be going from acute to general quality issues. That can only mean whoever was at the wheel is asleep or fell overboard.

Apple needs to do a much better job, not only with software releases, but details regarding those releases. My confidence in Cupertino righting the boat started to evaporate last year.

I’m recommending to others that skipping updates should become the norm until near critical. Unfortunately without any reliable details from Apple (and with rapidly decaying trust) judging when things are critical is going to remain very problematic.

Going by issues with Apple software updates lately (Safari 15, iOS 15, etc), I am scared to apply this update.
I'm so deeply tired of this narrative. Remember when Apple accidentally shipped a Mac OS release without the components required to print?

No reason you should. It was System Software 7.5.4.

Remember when Apple broke WiFi? That was Mac OS X 10.2.8.

I could provide more examples, but it's always been worse than you remember. Everyone's always surprised when it happens again. Instead of getting upset at the exception of software with significant problems, get upset that it's the rule.

My advice? If you don't have to update on release day, just wait a week. The problems will be known if not understood by then and you can make an informed decision.

Unfortunately, you can't just skip the next update here. They update everything related to Apple ID, iCloud, their built-in applications that interact with their servers.

I don't know exactly what is going on on their servers, but looking at some of the logs and how the system has been working lately, I can assume that they really have a mess there that no one can control.

Perhaps the time has come when they have to redo their ecosystem from scratch, maybe they are already doing it.

Weird that I still haven’t been prompted for this update. Is it included in macOS 11.6?

contacted apple in regaurds to this "device support update" they have no clue lol.
anyways, have been having issues restoring my iPhone 13 pro max, getting weird errors. hopefully this "update" fixes this issues. I'm in Australia, can someone confirm if this update has hit their macs yet?

What about Snow Leopard? 🤔
It actually has more to do with the version of itunes rather than the system.

It's only good back as far as itunes 12.8.2 for El Capitan and Sierra.

Minimum system requirements for itunes 12.8.2 is el capitan - hence not for Snow Leopard.

For Snow Leopard, itunes finished at version 11.4.

CoreTypes and MobileDeviceSU2 are really just 2 parts of itunes which need to be updated from time to time to keep up with changes in ios, ipados and new ios and ipados devices. So they update these parts without updating the whole itunes. With Catalina they became part of Finder instead of itunes - again update these parts instead of updating the whole Finder.

People don't go and buy a new mac every time they get a new iphone for example - just so they can manage music and photos on the iphone. So it's just an attempt to maximise compatability. There are limits to this however so I think you are out of luck with Snow Leopard.

No, as I mentioned in an above post, it showed up on my Late 2013 13" MBP running 11.6, but not my iMac. The only difference between the two was the version of XCode installed. The MBP had 12.5.1, the iMac had 13. I updated the MBP to 13 yesterday after installing the latest updates.
