I think I'm the only one here, but I'm not very excited about the iPhone 5. The problem is: I should be because I just sold my iPhone 4s today. But looking at the leaks so far.. meh.... I hope it's much more than that long (and weird) screen. :(

iPhone 5 it is!!!

Another shining victory for the ignorance of the common consumer!

/ spending power of the common consumer.

Not everyone who buys Apple products knows that 'iPhone 6' would be a logical name considering there have already been 5 iPhone models released.

So, still no rumors of a Golden Master for iOS 6. I think they might still be 1 or 2 betas away from a Golden Master. Maybe it will not be released to the public on the 12th. Maybe available on the 21st with the phone (or whenever Apple makes the new iPhone available)?? Maybe the phone will ship with iOS 5 and iOS 6 will be released next month with the iPad Mini. Any thoughts??

GMs are always released on the day of the event (12th). It'll be released the following week, likely a few days before the iPhone release (19th).

Golden Master usually comes out on the keynote date, thus hiding the last few features until they announce them, then it will be released on iPhone day.

completely agreed. Surprisingly i'm not excited at all, and it's not because of the leaks, heck, everyone was excited about the iPhone 4 even after the leak.

I'm keeping my 4S and will probably either get the iPhone 5S or 7.

Are people really surprised by this being an iphone 5 announcement?

Also they should just call it the new iPhone.

But I also find some irony in the tagline "almost here" since this phone is "almost" something different from the last 2 phones.

Don't bow down to the herb just yet Lol. The iPhone is still the 6th Generation, just like the previous version had different numbers, this will still be the 6th.

Remember all they do is a marketing technic to keep us talking about it Lol

Marketing indeed, haha. Couldn't have said it better myself. But you're very much correct, it's still the sixth-gen. 5 is just a number.

Still excited though!

The Dacia Sandero is almost here!

An iPhone 5 makes no sense.

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4 (note how the 3GS was counted)
iPhone 4S
What makes sense to everyone except geeks who are anal about inconsequential stuff, is that 5 comes after 4.

If they called the new iPhone "iPhone 6", 97% of the target audience would go "Eh? Why the hell did they jump from 4 to 6?".

The remaining 3% would masturbate in delight (These are the same 3% who exclaim "OS Ten!!!" when they overhear strangers talking about "oh ess ex").

What is common sense about the 6th gen iPhone being named the iPhone 5?

Technically it would be the 6th iteration, but 4th full "all new" generation.

1st Gen: iPhone
2nd Gen: iPhone 3G
2.5 Gen: iPhone 3GS
3rd Gen: iPhone 4
3.5 Gen: iPhone 4S
4th Gen: iPhone 5

It's a marking moniker. Reeeeelax. They rarely are common sense. Most of Apple's naming schemes are not entirely intuitive, same as most other companies' products. (See: Apple's support docs titled "which iMac do I have?".

More like shining defeat for the ignorance of fanboys trapped in their nerd house.

Except most fanboys thought that it would follow the naming convention of the iPad, as in "the new iPhone".

Besides, those of us finding issue with iPhone 5 aren't fanboys, merely people who passed 1st grade counting.

HERE'S A SIMPLE EXPLANATION FOR THE NAME.

There was the original iphone. It didn't need a number.
The iPhone 3G had 3G. No shocker there either.
The 3GS was a vast improvement in speed. Thus, 3rd generation.
The 4 was the 4th GENERATION iPhone. It was completely new.
The 4S wasn't completely new. It just added siri. Still technically the 4th generation of the iPhone.
The new iPhone will be the 5th GENERATION of the iPhone. It doesn't matter which one it is. The number stands for the generation, not how many products were before it.

tl;dr
the 5 is for the 5th generation iPhone.

Apparently the only one apple admits to not being a generational upgrade was the 4S. All others were MAJOR improvements.

The 3GS wasn't different enough to be a new generation, but was a vast improvement in speed.

Hmmmm....I'm one that argues for the 5 making sense and even I don't agree with this. Any hardware upgrade to the iPhone 4 would have constituted a new hardware generation. If it had ONLY been Siri, then I could agree....but that wasn't the case.

But perhaps.....what is the identifier for this model in iOS?
