You only want a bigger screen because you are jealous at the Android geeks. (Note: the Samsung Galaxy Note)

You don't need a bigger screen.

Just thinking about screen size in terms of development. If the screen size was to change (larger), would Apple have to lower the dpi and keep the aspect ratio?

Everything that has been developed for iPhone so far has been developed at the same aspect ratio (2x3), so the progression from the 320x640 screen to the 960x640 screen was fine because it was the same aspect.

So would a larger screen would need to drastically raise or slightly lower the dpi to maintain the aspect ratio, or adopt a new one? Considering the sheer amount of apps developed for this aspect, is this likely?

I hope that makes sense, it does it my head.

Yes, you're pretty much spot on. Regardless of the physical screen size Apple will want to maintain the same resolution that we have now. This is really to avoid a developer inconvenience we kindly refer to as fragmentation. If the screen size is physically made larger & the resolution is kept the same, we get a lower PPI (ie less retina-ish). It's like a Nintendo DS vs a Nintendo DS XL (the latter being identical to the former in resolution but much larger, made for people with sausage fingers and/or eyesight issues).

Please don't make the screen any larger unless it doesn't add any size to the device at all. I would rather they keep the "smaller" screen and make the phone smaller. I have other devices (iPad, laptop) with larger screens. Most of these huge android phones I see make me cringe. I want a smaller phone not a bigger one. Now, if they get a little more screen landscape creatively without impacting the phone size much, that's ok.

I don't think the desire for a larger screen is as universal as the OP claims.

Nope, not universal. I really like the high-res screen of the iPhone 4. It makes the iPad and older iPhones look fuzzy to me, enough so that I don't enjoy using them as much. I don't know what the resolution of iPhone 4's pixel count would look like in a 4" form factor, but if it's noticebly less sharp I'll be disappointed. In terms of interacting with the UI, the current size is just fine for me. Also, no matter what, I would NOT want the phone's physical dimensions to get any larger. I don't have a murse, belt-clip or fanny pack - my iPhone travels in my pocket. Just IMO, not trying to push my preferences on anybody. <shrug>

Go ahead and give me a larger screen, but not a larger phone.

"Go ahead and give me a larger screen, but please bend the laws of physics to do so..."

Something's gotta give here buddy, small phone or big screen, but not both.

It's not "all about the screen." As much as it may surprise or irk you, Apple's target audience isn't drooling adolescents fawning over gaudy, flashy bling crap.

Somehow Apple lost their way, just like in the 90's with the PC wars. It's obvious that the screen is the biggest desire for the new iphone. Apple being arrogant and not giving the people what they want. Tsk tsk.

Apple needs US, not the other way around. Funny how history repeats itself.

I just don't understand this obsession with a bigger screen.

As long as people continue to line up for days just to buy whatever they come out with... they will continue to do this.

Get an iPad. That has a big screen. I have one. It's great.

I really hope the iPhone gets smaller, not larger. The current screen size is fine. Less bezel for more screen would be ok, but not compelling.

Thanks for the reply. I thought as much.

I figure it seems less likely they'll up the screen size then unless either:

a) They reduce the PPI and are willing to take a step backwards with a 'less retina-ish' screen resolution (IMO not very likely/ Apple like)

OR

b) They have made a dramatic step forward in PPI for even more retina-ish display to enable a slightly bigger screen and higher pixel concentration while maintaining aspect ratio.

This actually sounds reasonable.

But look at it this way. We get 'Assistant' instead.

True story, bro. Who needs a big screen if you can just talk to your iPhone? Which I'm sure people will do, because now that the world has learned that most people talking to themselves are in fact just using a headset, it's time to make the next step!

apple put themselves into this situation by releasing a retina display. now they'll have to figure out a way to deal with implementing a bigger screen if they ever decide to release one.

the thing that i think upsets many people about the next iphone though is that ios5 was announced way before the new iphone. basically everyone already saw what the next iphone would be equipped with (in terms of software features), so what is there to get now except for spec bumps? not much...

wow I am really in the minority, I like the 3.5 inch screen. But thats e, I prefer product unison, I don't want things to change. I think the iPhone 4 with an a5 and better camera would be terrific! Now I am sure I will get a lot of negatives But i really do prefer the retina display over a larger and more pixelated display.

They don't have to deal with that.

Because the current screen is not a problem.

1. they lost their way. How? The event isnt until tomorrow and your guessing like everyone else. Also, last time i looked (which was days ago), only IBM are close to them with Microsoft a 1/3rd behind in 3rd..

2. Arrogant? Because your not getting a screen you want from a company who NEVER said they were giving you one... grow up.

3. lol...you might actually be wrong because Apple actually has more money than the US Government, so the US could actually do with a little loan from Timothy and the boys...

4. I hope history doesnt repeat itself because that would mean we all have to endure another one of your posts.

You must be a well endowed individual. Most of these guys screaming for a larger screen obviously have to make up for certain shortcomings in their life. A bigger screen will help with their psyches.

Couldn't this have waited for tomorrow, when you knew for sure it didn't have a larger screen? Now if it does, this will just seem pointlessly whiny

Most people don't like big screen more than 4" but a large chunk wants as large as 4.5" and that's what Samsung, HTC, Sony, Motorola etc are giving to them. Galaxy Prime, Droid HD, etc already having 1280x720 Resolution on 4.65" with 285ppi will beat the crap out of iPhone 4S. You all certainly don't like anyone speaking bad about iPhone but that's the truth. Tomorrow is D-Day for Apple.

Exactly.

Of course there is a limit to phone size, but a 3.5 inch screen does not approach that limit to the vast majority of customers. 4-4.2 screen with 1028x768 or higher res will firmly plant apple in the drivers seat. Otherwise, they narrow themselves into a niche.

Yeah What a Bust

Apple sure missed the boat on that iPhone thing. imagine how many they would sell didn't have all those fatal flaws!

Sure glad I bought Microsoft stock Instead of Apple:D
