To everyone complaining...

Remember how a month ago you could have cared less when we received Black Friday deals and nobody else did? Let them have their day.

Who could resist the call of the lucky bag?!

Where is my 12 days of Christmas app!

An app that would give out free stuff that people will do nothing but complain about, a la U2-gate? If I was Cook, I'd not do the app this year because of all the ungratefulness of people regarding U2-gate and the stuff they gave out last year.

For the record, if they do the 12 days thing again this year, I would probably just download the stuff and not care about it too much. It's free and free is (usually) good. And it doesn't hurt.

Yeah, and we Americans have totally captured the market on that. There are no iPhones being purchased in Hong Kong early for sale at significant gray market mark-up in China. Yeah, no way, not no how. :!

I don't think you can really compare. Exporting products to a country where they are not available is a business opportunity.

I doubt that the same will be done in Japan. Moreover, the lucky bags may be a bit too risky for making a profit, since only a fraction of the bags sold will have products with a value that exceeds the purchase price. You would have to sell these products at a minor loss and recuperate those with the profits you may, or not make, by being lucky.

This is a lottery, and lotteries are very carefully regulated in the US. This is why things like the McDonalds Monopoly game have "NO PURCHASE NECESSARY" all over the place. That makes it a sweepstakes, not a lottery.

Not really. A lottery charges a fee for a chance to win a prize. In this case you are purchasing a grab bag and thus are receiving something of value in return for your money, you just don't know exactly what you get.

nothing more than Japanese form of gambling, they do this in their mobile games too.

I rather NOT pay 350 dollars for an random iPod and headphone and instead, get something I want.

I don't think Apple ever intended to just give away free stuff. It's always been an elaborate marketing scheme to get customers into the App Store and iTunes Store, which is probably why it was not offered in the US until last year (these stores are much more popular in the US than they are elsewhere). With the U2 album this year, I'm sure they exceeded their budget for the year.

I don't think this qualifies as a lottery. It's a grab bag, and it contains a random quantity of items of greater value than the purchase price.

I thought that lotteries were the number of winners exceeded the number of purchasers of items, so there are losers, who buy something, and get nothing.

This thing: everyone wins
Lottery: only a few win

Will Smith is the next choice to play Steve with Martin Lawrence as Woz.
It's going to be a musical set in a garage in Compton.

Love it!

a random ipod + some incase headphone + a shirt + some accessories nobody wants = 360 and a chance of getting better stuff is a "everyone win"?

Geez.

I did this 8 years ago at the apple store Ginza, back then they charged 52.500 Yen (334 EU / 442 USD) and here is my breakdown of the loot:

JBL on time 34800
e3c shure headphones 19800 Yen
procare 9800 Yen
smartwrap 1980 Yen
4gb silver ipod nano 23800 Yen
nike sport armband 4200
nike + ipod sport kit 3400 Yen
ipod nano dock 3400 Yen
crystal film set for nano 1280 Yen
porter for ipod nano 4800 Yen
train schedule software 3590 Yen
japan map software 11340 Yen
t-shirt (priceless, but let’s say 1500)
Total 123690 Yen (785 EU / 1042 USD)

[conversion rates from 8 years ago]

Some stuff I did not need (Japanese train schedule?) or would have paid for (pro care 100$) ... but overall I got my money's worth ... if it was not for that early and long lining up, I'd be tempted to do it again ... but I already got everything I need ... :)

Probably because people would line up and buy a bunch of them only to turn around and sell them on eBay at full price taking the fun out of it.

Us Americans have a knack for ruining a good time when the chance for making money off other people makes itself known...

This is why we can't have nice things.

You had your FREE U2 Album for this year......

music version of bloatware. how about something more meaningful?

ridiculously inflated prices on some of the stuff.

Personally paid 59 dollars for the JBL on time, would not go near it at $350.

Map software for 120 dollars? Seriously?

It looks like Apple just added 1 or 2 of products people want, and then throw in a bunch of stuff they can't sell, and VOILA!

Forget about it for ever. Apple will give all the money to their U2 friends for songs nobody wants even for free. Disgusting!

People complained cause it was forced into their device without a way to delete, that's not in anyway the same and don't try to make it out to be.

I heard in a US podcast that someone had did an analysis of the black friday sales and that the bargains weren't that real...

Is that a fair assessment of Black Friday Sales?
