Because lawyers. Lawsuits.

Apple does not want to bother with Americans who are dissatisfied with the (random) contents of their lucky bags, then hiring lawyers to go after Apple.

That's why.

no, it's BECAUSE of idiots/americans - the lawsuits only follow.

God Bless America land of the free. What joke you guys have more laws and restrictions than most other western nations. We pay no tax on any winnings, gifts or gambling.

Rather be able to buy any gun I want then having the option for a shark to legally hustle hard earned money from the mass public. Love to see London shape up after getting rid for the London Casinos.

Go to Japan.

It's not just for Japanese people. Anyone can buy one... in Japan.

There are many in Japan buying Lucky Bags for overseas residents for a commission.

Can not really disagree. There are many things we can do yet at the same time there are countless rules for everything and how and when something is done. Feels like if you do anything aside walk from point a to point b there will be some issue.

Probably because people would line up and buy a bunch of them only to turn around and sell them on eBay at full price taking the fun out of it.

Us Americans have a knack for ruining a good time when the chance for making money off other people makes itself known...

It really is fair game if someone is buying something. Some people make their income by finding different deals and anything that comes up.

Why would anyone spend 345 hard earned dollars for a bag that is surely full of headphones (the models that did not sell) and cases with crappy designs.
It is beyond belief. Yet, I'm in the minority here I think. Sure, a couple may have a bottom of the line spec'd laptop, but really. It just amazes me that people with buy anything. Anything.
Those lucky bags were thought up by merchants with stuff on their shelves that did not move. That is why the stuff is in the bag. They could not sell it.
Surround it with mystery and someone takes it home to put on a shelf and not use, or maybe gift it.
.....what attitude? ;)

You actually pay higher taxes on other things. The way you worded your examples suggests that you haven't examined any of them or the total amount of taxes paid over a year in most parts of the US compared to the other western nations.

This is a lottery, and lotteries are very carefully regulated in the US. This is why things like the McDonalds Monopoly game have "NO PURCHASE NECESSARY" all over the place. That makes it a sweepstakes, not a lottery.

Simple way around it. Make a deal where you purchase something stupid like a button with an apple logo on it and you get a free lucky bag. The buttons sell for $350 and the Lucky bag is a free gift with purchase.

To wrap this post up, and have New Zealanders in on it, sell them as Bilbo's Buttons for $350, and get a lucky bag as a gift!

I agree 100%. I don't mind that people would want to partake I this but it's just not for me. If I'm spending money I want it to be on stuff that I choose. Even with the chance of a big ticket item I'd rather keep the $345 and save another $600 to get exactly what I want.

These sort of "deals" are of zero interest to me.

Well yeah of course. I couldn't even imagine if I gave evil Apple $350 cold ones and didn't get the iPad I wanted, in color i wanted the terrible emotional pain and distress I would experience. I would sue apple every day so hard I would own the company in two weeks. Bastards.

I should would not. I feel that $345 prince is higher inflated unless one gets lucky.

Well, congress has made an exception for fantasy sports. I think they could make a retail exception, and word it so that it has to occur during the actual business the company does, and maybe limit how many "offers" can be available during any time. So no cash prizes, but products the merchant actually sells during a normal business transaction. Would be fun around the holidays.

I didn't think any fantasy sports are considered games of chance. They involve statistics and strategy. A good player will make more than a bad player. The same cannot be said for slot machines.

Have you seen the daily fantasy betting sites? It's not straight up gambling, but it's as close as you can come without calling it gambling. You buy in to win money, not over a season, but daily. The best player doesn't win all the time... there is *luck* involved. I heard some federal courts were looking into this.

How long does this promotion last for? I am going to be in Japan on the 19th.

Good old Japan. Anything goes - as long as you leave your shoes at the door :D

I think getting a bag full of random products with random values that you pay for would be considered gambling so unless the U.S. federal government makes all gambling legal...
Considering the fact that I see stores do things like this quit often. Or do not forget about woot and it's bag of crap.

Bag of crap people have been known to get TVs from them.

The reason it is not done here in the USA or else where is it is not part of our cultural. It is part of Japan and mix with stores want to get ride of all last year's stuff. Easiest way to do that was put it in a bag deep discount and make it completely random what people get.

When I eventually visit Japan, I will choose to be a rebel! An anarchist! I will walk inside the home/hotel/inn with my shoes on. What could go wrong?

You might wake up Godzilla ... :D

Specially if you do that at home of someone (like a friend or colleague) it would demonstrate an enormous amount of disrespect.
Watch the entrance area: if they have there the shoes around, take yours off. Just make sure to get new socks without wholes. :p
They might have also some slippers you can put on to feel better or warm in winter time.
Also: often you find another pair of slippers at the toilet. You better switch again while doing "your business".

What you do in a western-style hotel is up to you. But again: as long as an employee is around it not harm you to take off the shoes.
If you are in a Japanese style hotel: take off your shoes.

PS: on one of my first visits to Himeji castle I also (tried to) kind of ignore that rule/behavior: oh man, I never heard a Japanese guy more screaming about me as stupid gaijin. I learned my lesson.
