Why? Do you think that Apple would be not be better served by a special team whose chief mission is to orchestrate new iPhone OS-based platforms?

Do you think it's better that Apple divert engineering resources from their normal teams and jobs every time there's new platform development? Do you think iPhone engineers should be ripped away from the next generation iPhone in order to get device drivers running on the iPad?

I read numerous times that this is exactly what has happened. I think Steve even mentioned this in his keynotes a few times (but not in that wording of course). OSX seems pretty stagnant since 2007, save for a couple of features (which I have not benefited in any way from from). Their current pro products use outdated technology.

I use my computer for both serious work and for surfing the web. I love Apple products, but I have no loyalty to any company. If they neglect their pro products and applications, then I will have to look elsewhere.

I can see them leaving the traditional "computer" market all together. They will go where the profits are.

Not when the only other competition is the N97. :(
I'll admit that my situation is rare and even more so in my 20-something age group.

My MacBook and desktop are more than enough. I just want a larger display to watch recorded shows in Windows Media Center. :D

I was hoping for an iPod Touch update during the iPad announcement. Once again I've been let down by Apple.

I don't really have much of a need for a mobile phone. Any talk I try to being up on MIDs usually gets me insulted so I don't bring it up anymore. The iPhone is ludicrous and the iPod Touch too limited.

Hahaha yeah if you're not worship Steve Jobs or one of his products on this site you're are going to get attacked.

A new device running the iPhone OS seems interesting, I'd have to see it first. I would pretty angry if they had the iPhone OS as the main operating system for the computers.

HOWEVER, if they could somehow make a dual booting system, where you could either boot into full OSX with an x86 processor, or into the iPhone OS with the ARM battery sipping processor, that would be great. Many netbooks have their own light, fast booting operating system along with windows, and the user could log into either. If you have limited battery life and no way to charge, yet want to surf the web, you could boot into the iphone os for power savings. It's kind of like how the MBP's have a 9400M and a 9600M GT you could switch between.

What else besides a GPS and a camera would you want in an iPod touch? (or are those the things you want?)

My god that takes me back to the iPod Touch 2G hopes/

I eventually got a TomTom for dirt cheap off of Amazon. My compact Kodak still gets nods on how small it is but it does need a new battery.

This happens, I go Linux. What a joke! As if it weren't bad enough that Apple slapped the iPhone OS on the iPad! I might have actually considered one had it run OS X!

What, you think there's no room to improve the iPod touch?

Here's what I'd like to see (in addition to the aforementioned camera and GPS):
1. aluminum back, like the iPad
2. storage bump
3. DVR capability
4. vibrate function (for apps that use Push)
5. 16:9 screen
6. removable battery
7. flash
8. optional data-only 3G (like the iPad)
9. USB port

though the only ones I have any chance of seeing are the first and second. :(

As it stands now, the iPhone OS is not a good computer OS for me, keywords being "For me". It may be for other people. Mac OS X & all the other major OSes have features I want/need that the iPhone OS lacks. Examples:
-multiple users
-file systems
-movie & audio editing
-hardcore games

The most important is a self-contained, independent OS. Sure you can add songs, photos, apps one by one on it, but you need another computer to sync CDs you've ripped, your existing photo libraries, etc.

I'd be open minded and see where Apple takes the iPhone OS. If it gains these features in some form, I'd look into it. But without these, Apple's going to lose a lot of customers.

That may be but Microsoft has taken a good lead on Apple in in-car automation. The Sync product by Microsoft and Ford is what is selling Ford cars like crazy right now. Without the Sync product Ford would be barely scraping by.

Apple should take a good hard look at entering the auto industry like Microsoft did. GM has OnStar and Ford has Sync so it looks like Apple will have to partner with a foreign auto maker to get their wares in vehicles. VW, Mercedes, and BMW would be good partners. Heck Toyota could use a distraction right about now.

If I am not mistaken MB, BMW, and the VW AG group all have some sort of partnership with Google to bring Google maps navigation to their cars. So, Apple may have a slight battle in this sector if they do try to move to it. Battle could easily be won, but then again who really knows.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Let's not take a good idea too far. The iPhone os is brilliant for a small screen, but os x is vastly better on a full size computer. Each device should have the os best suited for it, not just a slapped-on os designed for a different device (see: RIM's attempt to put bb os on a touchscreen). That's why I wanted something between the iPhone os and os x for a tablet. Oh well.

I think it probably has more to do with the fact that they don't make cars as crappy as GM or Chrysler, and that they didn't accept a bailout.

This. My mother's considering a Ford, and it has nothing to do with Sync. In fact, she would never order a car with Sync, or at least she'd never use the feature. Her reasoning is simply that Ford makes the best hypebrid on the market right now, and for some reason my mother loves her hypebrids. Go figure :/

Not all would agree with me, but I have a lot of FLAC audio files that I would rather not convert. I would like to see the Touch(or any ipod for that matter) have sound quality that my old Cowon A2 had, or my Sony Walkman mp3 has, after all these are mp3 players first and SQ(with battery life and build quality which Apple usually has) should be priority #1. While we are at it why not give us a built it DVR feature so we can hook up the touch to your nice TV and record tv shows straight from it when we want to.

If this is true, they really have to re-brand this thing from being "the iPhone OS" It's revealing itself to be much more based toward being a media consuming / mobile device OS, and fundamentally a touch based OS.

hmmmm

I don't understand the idea of running iPhone OS on iPad or any other device. It's just the name that throws me off. iPod touch is not a phone, iPad is not a phone, yet the OS has "phone" in it. Weird.

I work for a VC firm, and when I pointed out that Apple is moving to new devices with iPhone OS, one of the managing directors replied that it makes sense. The iPhone OS is where the money for Apple is. Every piece of software is controlled by Apple and Apple can make more money.

this is not going to be good. see the iphone os on a macbook air or mac mini instead of an actual OS. The user configuration will be gone and Apple will lock everyone into iTunes and its App Store. This does not look promising.

Im with you on this one. It does look like the Apple strangle hold is getting a bit tighter. Who's to say that in a few years it'll be all tied down OS with Apps only purchased from the itunes store, say MS office, FCP, Aperture??

May I suggest that the A4 and similar chips find it's way deeper into the mac chain than the iphone os. It's seems like a great chip, pretty fast, really small, doesn't need a lot of power and can possibly output full HD. If it did cost 1B  to develop, apple probably has some tricks up it's sleeve for it.

Sure, the apple TV, some kind of server could run it with a modified iphone os.

But what I'm thinking is that it could be in the chipset of future macintoshes, alongside an Intel processor and a nVidia or ATI graphics card. Kind of what the 9400m is doing right now.

I mean, we haven't really seen OpenCL/Grand Central or Light Peak in action. Both of those applications could benefit from that kind of chip and set apart macs from PC in hardware once again.

edit : okay I might be missing a bit the point of this particular rumour...

Wat.

I HIGHLY doubt Apple would put iPhone OS on a full computer it doesn't make sense. Other devices sure, but would they really alienate current OSX users.

Apple toaster time

They already did that.

I hope they don't go that route in all honesty, I prefer the structure
and stability of *ix and universal binary
.. I mean come on Apple.
^_^

Can you clarify this statement a bit? What is it about apps that are compiled for x86 and ppc that offers a benefit? What is it about "*ix" that offers more stability?

I'm just a bit confused and was curious what you meant.
