I'm calling it now, the iPhone 8 will only be able to charge with Apple's own first party charging pad. Qi devices should be able to work with any charging pad, but Apple will find a way.
I wouldn't be so sure.

Right now you can charge the iPhone with several not Apple products. The question is do you really want to us third party chargers and risk damage to your phone.

That ball looks sweet. BUT. What exactly are the benefits of wireless charging? A ball that is plugged into the power, as opposed to a cable plugged into the power. Both still need cables.

So what are the benefits or is wireless charging just a lame marketing exercise, a chance to make extra cash from yet another accessory?

Let's hope Apple stops shipping headphones in the box. Got way too many stock piled at this point. Nor have I ever actually used them, preferring to wear my own set. I wouldn't mind no charging cable either if there was a separate wireless charging pad for purchase. For the many of us who buy a new phone every year I wish it were as simple as walking up to an iPhone vending machine and getting just the phone. I always leave the iPhone box in the store anyway for them to recycle (probably trashed). Such a waste of material.

Yep risk it and if the device breaks, send it back to Apple for a full new replacement. The device should be able to work with any third party charger and have internal mechanisms that prevent the device getting damaged.

The onus is on Apple to ensure its device doesn't fail, and if it does does fail, that it fails gracefully.

This whole obsession with wireless charging is absurd. Especially if it requires contact. I use my phone as my gps for a living and if i have to add some bulky, expensive charging hardware to replace my current lightning cable i will be pissed

Doubting it would be a either-or... meaning wireless charging AND Lightning charging. Lightning does more stuff than just charge iPhone. Can't be eliminated and still do the other stuff.

If you have bluetooth in your car there is wireless audio but no power. You then have to run a cable to charge. Let's say there is short distance wireless charging built into the center console of your car. Now you don't have to take your cellphone out of your pocket to charge and still get wireless audio. Being that I get in and out of my car and use my phone a ton for work (constantly need to charge) and don't like having a case on my phone, wireless charging is a feature that couldn't come sooner.

I don't see the point in this, you still have to place the phone on the charging matt for it to charge, i'm willing to see what Apple are doing but i was never impressed with the Samsung version, maybe Apple will change my mind in September with the new iPhones, but at the moment it seems a bit pointless.

Think beyond yourself and your immediate needs. How about the traveler who would like to be able to go and not lug along the brick? How about a mat in the airplane tray table? How about mats on the train or bus? How about mats at the airport instead of huddling up with others around sockets and sitting on the floor? How about mats at restaurants where you can grab a charge while you are eating lunch? Office desks? Conference tables? Student desks? Seminar tables? And on and on.

There's lots of places your phone rests where plugging in Lightning to charge is not possible, easy or readily available. Now imagine charging pads in such places. Once Apple goes with a standard (or their own (non)standard) such pads will pop up in lots of places where they cannot already be found. And as they propagate, one might gain the confidence to be able to leave the brick at home.

Besides, it doesn't really matter if one sees this as pointless or not right now. If Apple implements it, some of the same people will be back gushing about the greatness of it and why it is must have, "how did we ever get by with wired charging?" Right now, opinions can vary widely because rumors are early and nobody knows if Apple is really going to do it. Once the collective believes Apple is going to implement it, a wave of enthusiasm for it will rise up and swamp anyone who still see it as pointless.

I have a problem with the term wireless charging, because it still has to be plugged in and the phone rested on the charger. Now I'll admit that if I can go shopping and at lunch pop into a Starbucks sit down at a table and pop my phone on the pad that rests, it would be handy, but at home I don't see the point. However if maybe Apple will add their on twist to it? And I may be convinced if they announce in September.

There will be no Apple twist on it, just the same old tech but more widely available on the US because now Apple is doing it and it's gonna be amazing now. Mark my words.

I can get that. I'll offer this: sometimes I'm fumbling a bit in the dark trying to get a Lightning cable into the slot. If there was a charging pad there where I usually charge it, it eliminates the fumbling. Both options have to be plugged in, so I have a Lightning cable or pad plugged into a socket in either scenario. And yes, of course, I could flip on a light to visually plug in the jack so this is not a huge thing.

Consider it like this: if it ships with such a pad much like the current one ships with a brick & cable, does anyone care? Look at shipping with EarPods with 3.5mm jack vs. shipping with earpods with a Lightning jack. It seemed like there was a lot of grief about the decision itself but since it shipped with a replacement solution in the box, a lot of people just rolled with it. I doubt this would be different.

I get the point that mat induction charging isn't true wireless charging. However, I still welcome the idea as this is more convenient that trying to plug in the phone in the darkness before bed.

It also opens more convenient phone dock that can also charge using the induction charging. I hate plugging in for recharging in the car.

Then invent a better name for 'no-plug' charging.
How about calling it with its name—inductive charging. Wireless charging is a marketing term as of now.

"Inductive charging" uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects through electromagnetic induction, this is usually done with a charging station
"Wireless" is the transfer of information or power between two or more points that are not connected by an electrical conductor. The most common wireless technologies use radio.

Maybe they're going to push "long-range Qi" ?

It would make sense for any iPhone to be compatible with the standard in addition to whatever new thing Apple has cooking. Kind of like W1 vs. Bluetooth. Works with any Bluetooth device, has extra cool features when W1 compatibility is available.

Well, the Apple Watch technically uses Qi technology, but they made it so it only works with their chargers. It wouldn't be surprising.

Qi charging is not very healthy for the batteries, since they are being constantly blasted with radiation. Many Note7 failures happened while on a Qi wireless charger. Personally, i will take take the time to plug my phone in if it reduces the chance of me having to buy a new house.
