"Entry-Level" and "Future-Proof" aren't really what Apple is about.
If you spend more for a higher-end iPhone... you're gonna be better off. It's like that with a lot of products.
While I would love for ALL iPhones to come with a lot of storage standard... that's not how Apple rolls. Apple has always had tiered product lines.
As I've said before... Apple wants you to move up to the next product. If 8GB is too small... they have 16GB phones for you to buy.
If someone is interested in the 5C... great! It's actually a much better phone than the 4S. I wouldn't suggest the 4S to anyone today.
And if you want a 5C... you can now choose the same 8GB that you'll find on the 4S... or pay just a little bit more and get a 16GB 5C. (which is actually the same price it was prior to yesterday)
But if you're worried about having buyer's remorse from buying a phone that is too small... that responsibility will fall on the user. Apple makes it very clear on their website... and any decent salesmen will suggest that you buy the most capacity you can.
From Apple's website:
Is the iPhone 5C a disappointment? Maybe... maybe not.
But all Apple did was bring the cost of the 5C a little closer to the cost of the 4S.
If someone was considering the 8GB iPhone 4S at £349... now the much better iPhone 5C with that same amount of storage is more within reach at £429
Like I said before... no one should buy the iPhone 4S today. If someone is fine with 8GB... moving to the 5C will get you LTE, a faster processor, better screen, etc. It's worth it.
And if 8GB is too small... you still have the same 16GB options available.
Is the iPhone 5C a disappointment? Maybe... maybe not.
i will try to say this as politely as possible but it seems quite hard for you to understand that i (and others here btw) are expressing our pov.
but you do a marvelous job of misunderstanding and misquoting me. i said i wish apple would offer a more future proof storage. which according to you is not what apple is about. maybe you remember a 50 gig imac in 2006 because i sure as hell dont.
again i never argued against tiered versions of the iphone. where do you get these ideas?
and are you still under the illusion im blaming apple for peoples purchasing decisions (me, my mom, sister or random stranger)? im saying i think an 8 gig smartphone should not be released in this day and age for these kinds of prices and no matter what apples website says (hell it once said their maps was the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever) is going to change that.
seriously you cant even make your mind up about that and you are taking part in this discussion?
yes the 5c is a better deal than the 4s. neither is a good deal though
You say: 8GB is too small in this day and age.
I say: Buy a 16GB phone or larger.
If neither the 4S or the 5C is a good deal... then buy the 5S and be done with it.
That's what I've been saying since page one, post #29... you can always go up in the Apple product line. User "MacFather" shares the same concern as you... 8GB sucks today.
Yesterday the smallest phone Apple made was the 8GB iPhone 4S. Today you can also get an 8GB iPhone 5C
But no one has to buy either of those. Larger phones are, and have always been, available for purchase.
Look... I understand what you're saying... 8GB sucks... and iPhones should come with a minimum of 16GB.
Then again... Apple has to make their flagship products attractive too. Something to aspire to. It's not only the faster processor and better camera... the flagship iPhones also have more storage options.
Maybe when the flagship iPhone starts at 32GB... the lower-end iPhone will get 16GB automatically. We'll have to revisit this when that day comes.
could have fooled me. its been back and forth all day.
so basically its be friends with the ugly girls to look better? well im not a fan of that strategy.
a) i find this a ridiculous limitation and b) i find 8 gig even more ridiculous and should be off limits almost 7 years since it was first available in the first iphone. every other part of the first gen would be deemed laughable today but apple still hangs on to this chip which of course make even less sense when the camera takes much larger pictures.
i hope that day comes next fall but with this "update" im even less hopeful.
btw i own a 5s but leading up to the release of the 5c i was hoping it would be interesting enough (price as well) for me to at least consider it but well.
i thought apple was all about bringing technology forward ie getting rid of floppy drives, dvd drives, adding firewire, thunderbolt etc but an 8 gig chip is what they cant let go off and makes their whole pricing structure work you say.
If 8GB is too small... don't buy an 8GB.
If you plan on taking a lot of pictures... don't buy an 8GB.
If you want to shoot a lot of HD movies... don't buy an 8GB.
If you have a huge music collection... don't buy an 8GB.
8GB is not a "ridiculous limitation" since you're not actually limited by it. You've always had other options.
Unfortunately... you can't buy the cheapest iPhone and have such perks as huge storage capacity.
But, luckily, Apple offers better models in larger capacities.
EDIT
Apple IS bringing technology forward. You own the iPhone 5S. You know it has the fastest processor Apple has ever put in a mobile device. You know it has the best camera Apple has ever sold. You know things like TouchID are amazing.
Apple's flagship iPhone is designed to showcase Apple's technology.
The older iPhones aren't for that. They are for a different kind of customer... someone who doesn't need the latest and greatest.

The problem I have (aside from the price) is that the phone is targeted at 'emerging markets' and first-time smartphone users. They won't realize that the phone's capacity is too small until they are outside the return window.
its not about wanting to do. its that you cant use the device to its potential because of this limitation. and write dont buy it as often as you want.
they arent bringing technology forward if they cant let go of the 8 gig chip. you yourself hammer on about its importance in the pricing structure which keeps apple firmly its heels. toss the chip out out like jobs did with the old macs on his return. move forward. make something better.
If someone bought anything other than the flagship iPhone... they shouldn't be upset that it can't do everything.
Storage isn't a mystery. The more you have... the more stuff you can save on your phone. It's pretty clear.
Nobody held a gun to their head and made them buy an 8GB iPhone. There were other iPhones available when they made the purchase.
You're right... 8 GB sucks. That's why it was always reserved for the bottom-end iPhone model. Only yesterday was 8GB available in the 2nd tier model as well.
The flagship iPhone always has the latest and greatest... and is available in 16GB to 64GB.
If you're worried about limiting potential... you should only buy flagship iPhones.

You sure about that? I get $529 for the iPad 4 (so $70 less than Air, $100 more than the iPad 2 it replaces).
by always you mean since 2008 since it was originally released in 4 and 8 gig and then the 16 gig was released.
i agree keep the latest and greatest in the flagship just dont keep a chip from last decade in a newly released phone.
there are enough ways to differentiate (battery life, screen size, memory, processor, touch id, etc etc) between version than being stuck in 2007 land else you can keep on pasting your answers for years to come because they will always be "as true" as they are now.
Because YOU only buy one. O2 will buy thousands.
8GB? Seriously?
Releasing anything, especially a Smartphone, with 8GB in 2014 should be considered a crime.
About time the iPad 2 had its last breath.
Yes... thank you for the correction.
It's up to Apple to decide what storage SKUs they offer.
And it's up to you to decide which model is right for you.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE STUCK IN 2007 LAND !!!
If you see an 8GB iPhone on the shelf... RUN AWAY FROM IT! AHHHHH!!!!
Yes... I wish all iPhones came with at least 16GB standard.
But until that day... and until we see a MacRumors article announcing the abolishment of 8GB iPhones... we're gonna have to let this go.
On a side note... I don't know why we're having this much discussion about 8GB iPhones anyway.
The best-selling iPhone model today is the 16GB iPhone 5S
Last year the best-selling iPhone model was the 16GB iPhone 5
And the year before that the best-selling iPhone model was the 16GB iPhone 4S
Do you see a trend? It appears that 16GB models have made up the vast majority of iPhone sales for quite a while.
The 8GB models barely register. It seems most people are already avoiding 8GB like the plague![]()
Sure. I'm not saying that carriers shouldn't get a discount for doing bulk purchase deals.
But why is the difference in price between the 8GB and 16GB model only £40 at retail, yet (apparently) around £133 for carriers.
Apple are losing out here. A lot of people don't want to sign up for a 24-month mobile contract, especially at the low and mid-tiers. They are losing sales to Android because their retail pricing is uncompetitive. (I'm talking about the 5c, not the 5s which rightly commands a premium price)
You don't see budget macs now do you so it's pretty unlikely that you will see a budget iphone anytime soon. Apple have never been part of any race to the bottom.
Unlike the processor power storage is what people actually use thoughIf 8GB is too small... don't buy an 8GB.

it is up to apple what to offer but its up to the consumers to let them know what they want.
apple is stuck in 2007 land by not letting go.
i dont know either. i say i wish apple would move on and let go of the 8 gig chip. i even want 32 to become the minimum offered in the flagship model but for reasons beyond me you are hellbent on making me realize "i dont have to buy it" which i kinda knew before but is not really relevant to my pov.
if we could be having a similar discussion next fall or even next year i would find that disappointing. would you?
The existence of an 8GB option on some models of the iPhone doesn't take away from the fact that they still offer 16GB, 32GB and 64GB on other models.
And it's just that... an option. So I don't know why you want them to get rid of it.
Like I said earlier... the 16GB is what MOST people are buying anyway... which make this entire 8GB discussion kinda pointless.
You know how Apple works. The current iPhone gets all the attention... and the previous models get pushed down the line. It's been like that for a long time.
Maybe someday Apple will offer the 3rd-tier iPhone with 16GB... while the 2nd-tier and flagship models will have 32GB, 64GB and 128GB options.
But they haven't yet... and they probably won't in the near future.
If you think Apple is bad... HTC just announced a phone with 4GB of storage. They must be stuck in 2004

btw is your second to last line (third if you count the smiley) an answer to my question?
The question about having this same discussion next fall or next year?
Hmmmm... we're at least 6 months away from the next major iPhone announcement.
And I'm 99% sure that Apple will still be offering some model of the iPhone with 8GB of storage in the next year or two.
But it won't bother me.... nor will I feel disappointed. I already have a 32GB iPhone 5S.
I ignored the entry-level 8GB and 16GB models and made the conscious decision to buy a 32GB model.
See? You don't have to be stuck with 8GB.
And if I was in the market for a Macbook Air... I'd also skip the entry-level 128GB option and go straight to 256GB.
I can make that choice.
You say 8GB is too small for an iPhone... I say 128GB is too small for a Macbook Air.
But I'm not disappointed that those options exist.
