It used to be easy in Hong Kong too but I recently purchased an iMac for a student and Apple online store required me to provide a photo student ID. They rejected me even after I uploaded the ID because the shipped to person must have the same name as the student too. Finally I talked on phone with their representative for a long time before they believed I’m a genuine customer. o_O

I ordered my 2017 iMac online, and I was surprised to see that the order went through without verifying that I was a student or asking for a student ID #. I thought it would be at the store because I chose to ship it to the store, instead of my house. However, even at the store, no one asked me to show a student ID when I picked up my computer.

Their stated sales policy is quite loose actually, even parent of a college student can purchase with the education price. I guess I was just unlucky to be flagged for review. But their logic should be improved since I can provide every proof they need. :p

The order will go through the online store anyway. The way they ask you for the proof is to send you an email afterwards and ask you to reply to the email and attach a student ID to it. If somehow the name of the card does not match the name on the order, they will automatically reject the order. The authorisation to the credit card won't be released for a few business days. That sucks.

Finally I wrote them an email and asked them why they rejected my student ID and a representative called me back. They asked me to use the student's Apple ID to order and so I did. My order was then rejected again because the Shipped To name is not the same as the student ID. I talked to them for quite some time on the phone and asked what proof do I need to convince them that it's a genuine order for a student and not for reselling (dang, why do I resell a half year old computer? Is there actually any profit?). They finally let the order go through. Yikes.

So Basically, the Apple ID name and the shipped to name must be the same with the student ID if you're asked to provide a proof.

Sold my beats on eBay for 80 bucks on the last giveaway with my purchase of an iPad 10.5. Thanks Apple!
Same. Got a 5k iMac last year and sold the beats headphones online to help offset the cost somewhat. Not a bad discount after factoring in the educational discount as well.

Is there even the vaguest chance Apple got their money's worth out of the Beats acquisition? How much did they pay again?

My dad just bought me the new BOSE QC 35 II. Couldn't be happier. Plus, who wants to sit with a Beats headset in first class on British Airways??

totally random and unrelated, but “uni” sounds still sounds so weird to my American ears. Like saying “when I was at uni” vs. “when I was in college.” Does “college” sound weird to brits/Australians? Just genuinely curious

It sure does. College in New Zealand is what we commonly refer to High School as, so when American’s say it I have to pause and remember that you actually mean University.

Coming from UK and now NZ, yes it does. "College" might refer to any intermediate institution beyond the age of 15/16, including before university, or where you would learn a trade, nursing, teaching or all sorts of other things. "University" is where serious learning happens. Or used to.

What sounds weirder is adults in their 20s referring to being "at school" :)

OMG thiz is an amazing promo.
I gonna buy one ipad 4 my gf so i can get these great new beats yay

That's a poor time to use a "4" instead of the word "for". Neither an iPad 4 (i.e., iPad 4g) nor an iPad Mini 4 will get you the free offer. The only iPads that will get you new beats are the iPad Pros.

Not weird, just means something silghtly different.

‘Uni’ always reminded me of the young unicorn from the cartoon series Dungeons & Dragons though :D

Saying you graduated college sounds like you're proud that you've graduated the absolute bare minimum of completing primary, intermediate and secondary school. I have to admit though Australians are sometimes caught off guard by the fact that in New Zealand we still use the term polytechnic where as they use TAFFE but the term university/uni is a pretty common even in the UK.

"Thanks for buying a $1,500 Mac. Now here's an overpriced set of headphones that really only cost about $10 to make."

Just like anything... you get used to it. And yes, it still sounds weird to hear Brits and Aussies say it. After 20 years.

Bose does seem like the old man headphones because the only people I see using them on planes are businessmen. I should know because I am in that category.

If I got free Beats with a new Mac I'd sell them to buy other headphones with actually good audio quality.

The newer beats' sound isn't bad imo, not to mention all the benefits that comes with the w1 chip. It's been worth it for me.

You wouldn't love beats if you tried other headphones as Beats lose most of the sound just to have bass.

Recent generations have much more balanced sound compared to the Monster days with better sound quality and clarity.
