You might want to speak to Apple about this. They guarantee their batteries (maybe not for longer than a year, mind you) and it's not normal that you have such trouble. It may be worth spending the money to get the battery replaced. Good luck.

I took it to the genius bar. They told me it was out of warranty and the repair would be $299. That would put me at over $1900 total for the laptop, and I'm just not inclined to throw good money after bad. Apple's own spec is 80% charge up to 1000 cycle count, so I was obviously sold a lemon, and I don't plan on paying a retail price to replace the lemon part. I had seen previously where battery replacement was supposed to be $199, not sure why I was quoted the $299.

Apple have always been good at the after sales service, making sure the product operates as expected for many years - I have a 2011 MBP that had the logic board replaced under extended warranty (GPU issue) and it's still going strong. But this sort of thing suggests that despite all the many years of progress, still mistakes are being made. Apple can not afford to do this, they stand alone in a massive heap of Windows PC's and Apple need to be perceived as the best. They don't seem to take risks with new tech, so i don't know why this sort of thing is still an issue? I mean the MacBook Air is a solid unit, so what gives?

They replaced your logic board with a board that has te same design flaw as your original board. Replaced mine 2 times and now it's broken again. They never fixed the problem, just replaced it until you couldn't claim your warranty anymore.

I had a similar experience. Apple replaced the logic board on my early 2011 MacBook in 2016. At the time, the “genius” actually told me the replacement logic board had a revised design that fixed the issue with the AMD GPU. That supposedly redesigned logic board died a few weeks back. The genius bar diagnostics showed a failed AMD GPU as the only malfunctioning component, and the symptoms were the same as last time. This time, Apple refused to fix it, referring to California legislation preventing them from servicing the computer as it is too old. The Apple genius and a store manager refused to admit that they never fixed the original AMD GPU problem back in 2016, and even told me I am lucky that they couldn’t fix it any more, because a third party repair would be cheaper...

Unfortunately, last week I then made the mistake of purchasing a 2016 non-touchbar 13” MacBook Pro to replace the 2011. That 2016 machine is now at the local Apple Store for battery replacement. At least this time Apple acknowledged the manufacturing defect without a lawsuit :)

Luckily, by now I have managed to get my (unfixable according to Apple) 2011 up and running again. Thanks to all the Macrumors users who contributed to that excellent thread that details how to force the computer to only use the Intel graphics!

Dropped off my mid-2014 15" rMBP at the Apple Store on Friday for a swollen battery. It won't sit flat on a table and the trackpad doesn't click. Hope they fix mine for free also.

Nope. it cost me $199.

Yesterday I dropped my mid-2014 15" rMBP at the Apple Store because of a swollen battery. It won't sit flat on a table and the trackpad doesn't work anymore. The bill will be $199 and will take 3-5 days. Figures. Maybe they will decide not to charge me. Because of the bottom cover bulge and the top case bulge between the space bar and the track pad, they will replace everything except the motherboard and the display for the same $199 (if they charge me).

Cost me $199. Dropped on Friday, picked up on Monday.

Any chance they can fix this while you wait?

No. It shipped to the repair center on Friday. They received it Saturday, did the repair and shipped back. Apple quoted me 3-5 days. They always beat their estimates.
[doublepost=1524593292][/doublepost]They had to take my display and motherboard and install it in a new top cover with new keyboard, trackpad and battery already installed.

Hmmm... Mine is work-issued. Gonna be hard to coordinate such a repair, even if it is for only a few days.

Keyboard: As long as it's not refurbished I'm okay with a replacement. But I don't want to get some oil stained second hand keyboard put in. That would be unacceptable.

You’ll definitely get a new part, 100%. Nothing second-hand.

Did you have AppleCare on it?

I don't think my battery is swollen (no way to tell without opening it up), but the battery has performed terribly after about the 1 year mark. Even now, with ~130 cycles, it's still at 81-82% capacity and lasts right around 5 hours with light use and about 3 with moderate use.

Nope.....no Applecare.

IF you battery is swollen, you can tell. your lid will stop closing properly and there will a gap when closed. Your top case with the keyboard will have a bulge that will get bigger.

Sorry to hear it, man. That's really unfortunate. I hope the prices will eventually go down for your battery replacement.

Call Apple, don't go to the Genius Bar. I called Apple using the Apple Service App on the iPhone. I explained to them that the battery was swollen after 71 cycles. 2015 MacBook Pro. They authorized the service and then I took it to a Genius Bar. Maybe it was because it was a swollen battery, however...your battery should have lasted a lot longer.

Picked up my MacBook Pro 13 Non-Touch Bar today and had the battery + top case replaced with this program, it's out of warranty now. No issues. Got it done in a few hours.

Cool. They must be stocking parts in the store?

I setup an appointment at the local authorized service center via Apple.com (no apple store within a few hundred miles), the service tech e-mailed me Monday and verified the serial number and ordered the part and said it should be here in time for the appointment on Thursday

had my 2016 ntb 13" mbp 8/512 battery replaced under this recall. it had around 230 cycles on the battery. no swelling i could observe. i always use a keyboard cover on my MacBooks but had a space bar and arrow keys not work properly a few months ago. after a few weeks if fixed itself (dust must've shifted) but i'm glad they replaced it with the newer 2017 keyboard. told it would take 3-5 days, but it was ready in 3. i had dropped the mbp once onto my garage floor and scrapped and dented some edges. since the entire keyboard/top case is replaced, it came back minus a few scrapes which was a nice bonus.

i'm still under applecare so have another 1.5 years if the keyboard acts up again.....

I'm eligible, but my battery is fine and not yet swollen, so I was planning on having it repaired at a later date.
But when I read that they do replace the keyboard (because some of my keys are not working at some time), I'm planning to have it repaired next month.
Does all here who have their MBPs sent for repair received a new keyboard?
I live in a country where there's no Apple store (only authorized) so I'm afraid they might only change the battery

How about the keyboards?

I just had Apple do the battery replacement and the work order also included the top assembly being replaced which I think includes the keyboard as well since my keys feel like new, so maybe they're fixing the keyboard issues without letting everyone know.

Can confirm: sent my 2016 nTB 13" MBP to an AASP via Apple Store for (eligible) battery replacement - they indeed replaced the battery and entire top case as well. So I got new keyboard, trackpad etc. Biggest surprise was how much tighter the TB3 connectors are now. I guess after 18 months I somewhat wore them out?

This might sound crazy, but I think I prefer my 2016 keyboard to the 2017 version. It feels much different than I was expecting.

FWIW - I wasn't really having any issues with battery or keyboard, but I figured since I wasn't going to use it for a few days (4th of July holiday), now was as good as time as any to send it off. The AASP was great, fixed it and re-shipped it the same day they got it, and included Saturday/Overnight FedEx delivery for the return.

Such a sad state of affairs if to replace a battery Apple also need to replace the top case, keyboard and trackpad. Doesnt Apple shout its green credentials every chance it gets?
