Or people are, wisely, just opting for AirPods?!

I mean, what’s great about saving $50-$150+ by getting Beats if you only get the full AirPods experience on actual AirPods?

Most sales are about some level of less than ideal demand for the product in question.

I personally don’t know more than 1-2 people who use beats. And I never notice anyone wearing them when I’m traveling or shopping.

Obviously anecdotal to my life. But I just don’t think demand for Beats is particularly strong.

And to be fair, how would Apple ever successfully bet on two almost identical horses without letting one starve?

All Beats will ever be is a lineup of different “AirPods SE”, allowing Apple to sell budget audio devices without compromising the AirPods high-end brand identity and price point.
Different colorways are not a selling point to be overlooked. AirPods have been their iconic white for so long—counting their ancestry as the wired iPod headphones—that they’re probably stuck with it, but the Beats brand allows the designers and marketers to get their kicks and make reckless decisions. (As a child of the ’90s, those translucent Beats Buds might cause me to make some reckless decisions of my own…)

I don’t know I see a LOT more people use beats in the gym or out running than I do airpods. I think if apple doubles down on the active market for the beats offerings they can certainly double dip consumers looking for pro pods for everyday and still get people to buy the beats. I certainly would if they update the electronics while keeping them sweat proof.
I have a home gym setup and use Powerbeats Pro [that I got on sale 3+ years ago] because they stay in/on my ear better than normal ear buds do. I'm not a huge fan of the b logo, but software wise, they "just work" and I imagine the experience I have with them is similar to those who use Apple AirPods. I've also never had sweat issues with the Beats. They're comfortable and stable while I'm running/working out. And they connect quickly and easily to Apple TV [as well as an Amazon FireTV stick]. I don't use them with Mac/iPad/iPhone.

Apple just needs to dump the Beats brand. I don’t think it’s doing them any favors. The Beats Studio Pro are an embarrassment. They got as low as $170 during BF/Christmas. They sound ok but they’re very uncomfortable and are missing being able to auto switch between your Apple devices like AirPods do, so they’re not even a really a true Apple product.

As an investor in Berkshire Hathaway, who has the single largest stake in Apple, I'm extremely happy that people buy this high margin, low cost product.
that does it narrow it down much. Everything Apple makes is high margin, they love squeezing their customers with prices that don’t reflect the quality or the real value of the product. I’d argue that beats headphones probably have less margin than the Apple equivalents (AirPod max).

Or they could include the features that are still lacking and give customers a choice to which brand/look they prefer.

Of course in Germany the Studio Pro are still 400 Euro.

Whoever says normal Airpods are superior, doesn't use headphones for working out/running. Nothing beats the Powerbeats Pro for these activities. I just wish Apple would upgrade them with USB C and the H2 chip.

Why do they still have Beats? I always thought Apple made a bad acquisition. I listened to my cousin's Beats before Apple bought the company I couldn't stand the sound. Bose was and is still a far superior product. I recently bought the Air Pods Pro Gen2 USB-C and I love them!!! They don't sound like the old Beats. So, what exactly are Beats for?
Brand recognition is a huge thing and it makes sense for apple to make both beats and AirPods. Y’all always mention apples walled garden. I’m all in on apple ecosystem so Im obviously going to buy AirPods.

But if I used lagdroid as my preferred platform I would likely not buy AirPods. I’d likely get one of the other brands so why not have a different brand and still reach a bigger audience.

Furthermore, beats is not directly marketed as an Apple product whereas AirPods are with a premium brand
As a pro audio guy with a recording studio, I can't wrap my head around anyone's desire to buy Beats.
See above.

Brand recognition is huge. AirPods are mainstream these days BUT beats have always been trendy. They were the cool headphones. You’re likely to see ppl born 2000 and earlier with AirPods vs 2001 and later with beats.

Beats were never meant to be the best headphones. My skull candy were better. Beats were made to look good. It’s why and many others brought them.
Airpods do not stay in my ears. Airpods Pro do not stay in my ears. Earbuds that don't stay in my ears are worthless. Beats Fit Pro stay in my ears.
Odd I don’t have issues with mine and I do a lot of movement.

I see beats as apples other foot in wireless for those who don’t want the AirPods, which are seen as an apple only product. Plus they want something less conservative in design.

I’m a dancer. As a professional dancer, TikTok dances, and I do burlesque dancing at my gentlemen club. Hair flips, spins, fast moving, Flips etc etc I have little issue with my standards or pros.

I wear my standards at work bartending and only time I had issues is me messing with my hair or ears.

I honestly didn’t know ppl still used bets. I graduated high school in 2014(oh god my 10 year anniversary Is coming up) and they were the rage then.

Nowadays everyone I know uses AirPods. Wonder who they are marketing beats to?

People who don’t want to choose between a poorly ergonomically designed earbud or spending $250.

As a data analytics manager, product and gross margin is my wheelhouse. Apple's gross margin is around 45% and their individual project margins tend to over around 45-65%. At an MSRP of $299, Beats headphones have a gross margin of 91%.

I think you read too much into my comment.

I'm a data analytics manager and I understand brand very well... what I was saying was a way of juxtaposing two opposing sets of information for humorous effect:

  1. I'm not a person who would stick with a product if it were garbage.
  2. I'm profiting from the people in the first category.

One of the things you'll learn about me as you see more of my comments is that I keep separate the ideas of what I like and understand and what the average consumer likes and understands... One of these costs me money (as a consumer), the other makes me money (as an investor).

Just as with iPhones Pro vs. the $799 iPhones and iPhones SE, Apple might let certain "Pro" features trickle down to some of the Beats products as AirPods Pro 3, 4 and 5 launch over the years to follow (or whatever Apple will name their highest-end wireless earbuds in the future).

But you will never(!) see Apple matching hardware and features of the most expensive AirPods in any of the Beats products unless that hardware and those features appeared in AirPods several years ago.

You're supposed to spend as much as possible when buying new wireless earbuds if Apple has its way, at least $249. And if you don't then you get lower quality and less convenience. Goes for Beats vs. AirPods and all other Apple products.

I can't remember the last time I saw anyone using Beats. All I see are AirPods (Pro) for people on iOS and Bose, Sony, SkullCandy for people on Android. I have a couple of pairs of the Sony WF and WH XM4s and I listen to Tidal with them. Both Bose and Sony provide superior sound to Beats, at least this was my experience from a few years ago. I'm not sure Apple provides unit sales number for Beats alone but I doubt that biz line is doing well. I imagine sales are being cannibalized by AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, which are the stars of the show.

Edit: 9to5mac.com/2022/06/06/airpods-shipments

Numbers-wise, of course, AirPods still rule. Of the 21.7M units Apple shipped, some 19.3M of them were AirPods, says Canalys

Certainly less margin than $19 Polishing Cloth, $699 Mac Pro wheels, and $999 Pro stand
