Jee, thanks. I think I'll stick with ebay...
There is no excess inventory. Apple's supply chain and production lines are too efficient. And we have just received reported iPhone sales for last quarter which were huge. If they have excess inventory, they just ease up on production and the inventory clears itself up.
That said, this is distinctly uninspiring offer. Apple with its economies of scale could easily do better than this. This certainly isn't likely to drive significant store traffic so that Apple employees need to prepare for the rush of upgraders.
This "up to" thing drives me crazy. How can you find out how much your phone is actually worth in an upgrade without hauling your butt over to the store?
I don't think it's possible, they used a little iPhone machine to check my phone's value. Although, you can check online at apple's recycling page but I got a better deal in store.
Sure, it's possible -- to at least say what the minimum trade-in value is for the various models and configurations. The point is, they want you to come to the store. Not happening, in my case. Not only do I just basically dislike these come-on type offers that might not be quite as good as they sound, the nearest Apple stores to me are an hour away.
Better deal is to trade in your old iPhone for a newer Android device. You would be making $100 this weekend because the S5 and HTC One is on sale for $100 all over the place.
Who claimed they were huge? Oh wait Apple. Shock horror. Company claims own sales are huge. Who would have though that.
You're the perfect consumer for Apple... blindly following. Of course there's excess inventory, why would Apple try to move more iPhone 5s's. You do not understand economics.

That, or you don't understand supply chains and SEC filings.
They would try to move more iPhone 5s's to sell more iPhone 5s's. Is there capacity in the global supply chain to make more? Almost certainly. That is the reason to try to sell more. But saying that there is "excess inventory" means that there are bunches of phones sitting around unsold. Apple's reported sales says that is not the case.

Thanks for the backup.
