I have a question, since I am running out of HD space on my SSD, can I (after I back up to an external drive of course) sign up to iTunes match, upload music, and get rid of the copies on my HD to free up space? I would have the cloud / iTunes match to access and will have copies on an external HD if there are problems. Would that be a bad idea? Or do I need to have them on my HD after I upload my music with iTunes match?

Yes, that would work. Just make sure that you look after the backup, just in case.

Two questions that I couldn't find a clear answer for in this thread:

1. Playcounts. Do they update to the original file on my Mac when I listen to something on my phone.

2. Podcasts. People are saying that "you don't sync" after turning on Match. I assume that only applies to the "Music" tab on an iDevice and I'll still need to sync for Podcasts (as well as video, apps and photos). Correct?

But how does it handle things like smart playlists that auto update? Previously I could just sync everything at once. Now with Match, as songs are played and playlists get updated, does it automatically get the fresh songs at some point? If not, since there's no more "sync" do I have to do a cloud download for each playlist?

Also, whatever they want to call it, when I'm in my house I want to be able to load songs from my local hard drive and not have to sit and wait for it to come from Apple's server.

Then Match isn't for you. When I'm in my house I want to not have to worry about files and hard drives, and synching. I just want Apple to know what music I own and let me access it from wherever I am in a consistent manner.

If it didn't download and keep the music on the device, I would feel the way you do, but I'm trying to get away from thinking about hard drives, files, and where stuff is.

I know own Dark Side of the Moon, now I can always get at it if I need it, and it's almost always just going to be sitting on my device anyway.

is itunes match a good way to clean up your library? i want to get this basically to clean up my library with the correct metadata and artwork. will match do this?

also once it updates my library can i copy this to another hard drive so i can keep a copy in my external hd so that i dont have to rely on the cloud for music?

icloud storage and the 25,000 song limit in itunes match = two different things?

thanks

Awesome

iTunes Match is awesome so far. Only had it for an hour and so far its matched almost all of my music. Out with the old bit-rate terrible sounding music and in with the new.

For all those who are wondering, simply finish the matching and uploading process, then "select all" music in your iTunes library and delete it. Again, "select all", right click and click "download". This will replace all of your music with iTunes quality music (256 bit-rate). It keeps all your metadata and keep songs that are "explicit". Good job Apple!

Where is the switch that says DO NOT sync over cellular network? I could totally see ATT being complete wankers about data caps.

I'm not sure but I'd say it's in the iTunes app, at the bottom. If you don't click the "download" icon next to the song, the song wont be installed on your iOS device (as in: you must download it manually). There's your switch. ;)

I can't possibly think iCloud would download automatically all your 25 000 songs on your device without your explicit permission (although I can also see this as a pain in the rear on some occasion).

I'm not sure why I need it either but I just signed up for the service to check it out. $25 a year isn't bad to see if it's actually useful.
One thing I noticed while it's gathering info is I tried to change the info on a song that I noticed had a strange spelling and it's greyed out when I try to change. I then noticed several songs are greyed out when you get info on a song. The songs still play. I'll have to wait until it's done with it's gathering info and such to see what the deal is.

Seems to be missing some albums. I know for a fact that the iTunes Store has the Stones "Exile on Main Street", yet when Match went through my library, it skipped over it and now there's no little cloud icon by "Exile". I have many other tracks too that are on iTunes yet match isn't seeing them.

In fact, about half my library seems to be skipped by Match. And about 95% of that IS in iTunes...but for some reason it's not recognizing it.

Not so good

I have 3593 songs. All but about 100 came from either ripping CD's that I own into AAC or purchasing from iTunes.

All but about 300 are standard releases available in iTunes store.

2070 did not match!!!!

Not a good start!

Can you upload your library from multiple Macs? I just signed up on my office computer, but my library at my office only has about 1,200 songs on it, as opposed to my home computer that has about 8,000. When I get home and turn iTunes Match on on my home computer, will it just add that library to Match?

So does it remove the DRM from older iTunes tracks without having to pay to update them to itunes+?

I totally agree with you about not wanting to worry about those things, and I didn't really worry about those things before but this new system is coming at the expense of some downgrades.

Would it be so hard for devices to be able to detect if they are on the network with the home library (which is exactly what they are doing right now) and copy over the local file if that drive is available and from the cloud if it's not? Seems like something Apple should be able to handle, either sync it from the cloud or the local version depending on what is available to the device. That would be consistent to me as a user and not make me have to think about drives but not make copying files much slower, it seems like Apple is being dogmatic instead of doing what would work best.

Not to mention that things like podcasts and videos still have to be synced so it's not like syncing is going away.

Disagree about a number of things. First, I'd back up everything (external drive or whatever) before deleting. Second, I'd create a smart playlist that includes songs that were matched and are under 256, and only delete those. No point in replacing songs over 256 (you'd be downgrading the bitrate) or that weren't matched (you'd be just bringing back the copy of the song you just uploaded, and higher bitrate songs converted down to 256). But for matched songs at lower bitrates, sounds like it's really handy.

Sorry, I wish it did to, but it keeps the metadata

that is not good. i have a lot of music ripped from old cd's that shows as track 01 track 02 and its annoying to find it in soundhound and type the correct data. also i have been changing the genres and i'm confused now since a lot of songs came out with mixed genres. arghhhh

maybe i should just hire someone for $25 to clean up my library lol

I don't even have iTunes Match in my iTunes sidebar to click on, even if it is only to tell me it's coming soon in the UK. lol

And what did this comment do, exactly, to deserve being marked down? Jesus H Christ ...

How many of those are purchased from iTunes? Those don't need to match since you can already download them again without needing a Match subscription. Were some of the 2070 iTunes purchases?

Lyrics

Are lyrics affected by iTunes Match? I assume it would leave the information in the Lyrics tab untouched, but I would hate to have that information deleted.

Lyrics are copied over to other devices along with all other metadata.
