I'm pretty upset over the new 13" MBP, no upgrade for the display and i was really hoping for an ssd upgrade after hearing last weeks rumors. Well, i sold my 2010 13 " MBP on eBay ($1025) and now im headed over to the apple store to get the new one. :):)

15" and 17" are too big for me, though i'm jealous of there Quad-core processors.

Overall it was a disappointing "refresh" by apple, especially for the 13" MBP. ITS A PRO MODEL, it should have at least have a better display than the 13" air, wtf were their engineers thinking

Now to find my credit card, lol

What do you mean "what were they thinking"? You are clearly unhappy with the new 13" MBP but you are buying one anyway!

If more people decided not to purchase them, then Apple would have to make more significant changes. You are just telling Apple that they made the correct decisions with the upgrade, backed by your purchase. I don't understand people like you. It's bordering on moronic behaviour.

how to buy previous 13" model

I'm about to buy my first 13" MBP and I was waiting for the updates, but since I'm not really convinced, I'll probably go for the previous 13" model. Any ideas on the price (drop) of the former model and how to order one?

Who went with gloss and who went with matte for the 15"? I've always had the 13", but it's time to upgrade to a bigger screen since I do most of my photo editing on my laptop. Which screen would have true colors and be better for image editing?

Matte display will be better for true colours etc but I have gone with the high resolution glossy display which has its drawbacks such as glare but I wouldnt have it any other way.

Ordered my BTO 17" yesterday and the expected delivery date is between the 4th and 9th of march which sucks big time.

Does anyone know if apple generally give a longer delivery date just in case, but in reality its delivered sooner?

So basically the new update is that the new MBP's are faster.. that's it.
I think it's ridiculous that the 13" still has no anti-glare screen, even though it's their most popular model

Definitely waiting until next year. The combination of things that just weren't included in this plus the price is just so disappointing. It seems that Intel is charging huge prices for Thunderbolt technology, because otherwise those prices are just unexplainable.

Although it is my first year at university, and it'd be nice to have a laptop to help me, the reality is that it just isn't necessary. There's computers readily available in the library and aside from quick note taking (which I can do on my iPhone, albeit more slowly), I really don't need a computer for university.

My problem is wanting a mac. Can I wait until (hopefully) the end of this year? I hope so. If I can, it'll definitely pay off. A major overhaul is imminent, and one can only hope that Thunderbolt prices have decreased by then (a price decrease is expected with its release to the mainstream market, however by the time the next round of MacBook Pros are released it still won't be available).

Hopes and speculations for the next generation:

- Complete redesign with liquidmetal (lowering production costs)
- Liquidmetal-based batteries (increasing battery life)
- Quad core implementation across the board (these new MacBook Pros are the first step, so this can be expected for next gen)
- Screen resolution upgrades (I'm tempted to say resolution doubling, looking at what Lion's HiDPI setting is hinting at, but that's probably too ambitious)
And finally,
- Generational CPU & Graphics upgrades (Ivy Bridge and whatever comes next for graphics - I'm completely out of the loop there so whatever)

If there's no redesign I'll shoot myself. I actually don't mind if they don't go quad core in the 13" though I am in the market for them, it just seems like unnecessary processing power to me. Anything to reduce the price further.

Anyways, that's me. Slowly going crazy with how much I'd like to finally buy my first mac. I guess today isn't the day, though.

Time to upgrade the powerbook g4...?

Why not buy? We will always yearn for the next latest and greatest.

I know, and I feel silly trying to deny something that will always be so true, but the thing is, it just seems that this is the end of a generation for the MacBook Pros. I wouldn't feel nearly as bad for having an iPhone 3GS if the iPhone 4 kept the same design. I'd rather not drive myself crazy wishing I had the next one when they're refreshed, although the just released line will still hold up incredibly strongly compared to the next line up, which most definitely will be a major update.

While we WILL always yearn for the latest and greatest, when the next latest and greatest is going to be such a huge step up from what we currently have, The prospect of waiting doesn't seem so unreasonable. Quite simply, I don't want to be the last to jump on the bandwagon of this generation of MacBook Pros.

As well as prejudice against Macs stopping them from ever trying them. Which means they never come to the realisation that it's actually worth a couple of hundred dollars extra to have a rigid, thin, light computer with well-rounded specifications, and a wonderful, clean OS without bloatware, and a lot of fully featured extra software.

A couple hundred dollars? I'd be all over that. The thing is that it's now $800-900 dollars when considering the MBP15.

And the idea that everyone who's complaining about the price/performance ratio has a prejudice against macs is crazy. I'd love to be able to justify to myself getting one of these, but there are other things I'd rather do w/ that $800.

Pros aren't going to buy the 13" to do serious work.

So when I use my MBA to execute functions required by my profession, it is not serious work ?

You're lumping a lot in that statement and being way too broad. Professions requiring computers to do "serious work" are a dime a dozen these days and are as varied as can be.

For my Profession, a 13" is plenty of computer, especially with the mini display port on its side. I can do tons of serious work on it and still carry it around with ease.

And my 13" isn't even a "MacBook Pro".

Unbelievable; why no antiglare option 13"???

Again no USB3, no UMTS modem, no quad option, no 16gb ssd.

OH ... do you really require a quad-core in a 13" laptop? Are you ready for the heat dissipation on your nadz?!

USB3 don't worry about it ... there are already is 1 Thunderbolt HDD on the market, 1 promised this summer (a family of them actually).
no UMTS is a GOOD thing. These internal ones fail on Windows and too many times varying models get changed in the supply chain - so have fun dealing with the correct drivers. I'd rather the external; should it fail its easily replaced no silly need to switch at the office.

The XPS15 and XPS17 also get Sandy Bridge - but they don't ship for 2-3 weeks, it seems. This combo was about $2300, with 8gb, 1tb, 555M 3gb video chipset, 3D... Dell obviously has a competitor here, selling a lot more hardware for a lot less money. Note, this also includes Windows 7 Ultimate, Office 2010, increased battery...

Buy now and sell later. I hope I'm not coming off as an Apple salesman. ;)
You have no guarantee that the next update will include a full redesign of the chassis. Plus, there's always the option of eBay or CL.

Hello,

I purchased a 13inch mbp today, the base model. I am second guessing, feeling like maybe I should have gone for the better 13'... but then I am wondering if a 13 inch air, maxed out 256 ssd 2.13ghz 4gb ddr3 would be better than either of the mbp's.

I am a sales manager for a marketing company. I do use imovie a bit, a little photoshop. I mostly use it for downloading and playing videos ( commercials ) for clients. I am constantly on the go with it.

Will I ever notice the difference between 2.13, 2.3 i5 or 2.6 i7? Would I be better off keeping the base model and just upping the rab to 8gb?

SOME ONE ADVISE ME, I dont know what to do. I want it to appear prestigious when I bring it out in front of clients!

Edit:

I have a 2007 imac and a 2008 imac also... ( if that makes a difference on my portable needs...)

can anyone advise me?

Good advice. I used to always buy the new top model, but now I buy one generation back.

Wait 3 months and ebay will be filled with early upgraders models who offer good value.

As for always wanting the latest, it's a generational thing. Today's young generation for the most part never had any hardships or learned to wait for what they want.

There really is no guarantee that there will be a major redesign next cycle. No one knows, and don't believe anything you hear. I mean for crying out loud, people were saying the iPhone was coming to Verizon back in 2008. All the rumors leading up to a product release or redesign have to be taken with a grain of salt, and basing your entire decision around one person SPECULATING what they think will happen will never result in a purchase that you can be happy with.

These new Macbook Pros are REALLY fast (almost twice as fast as last years models). The design is solid and beautiful and has been perfected. Any major redesigns to the body might have some defects (iPhone 4??) for the first generation. While we know that this new model is in prime condition and is blazing fast.

Everyone always wants the latest and greatest, and it's here, right now. They just got released yesterday, and this is the best they are going to be for almost a year. If you are in the market for a Macbook Pro, this is the absolute best time to purchase.

can anyone advise me?

For what you do, the SSD Air will be much faster in everyday tasks. It is VERY portable, and I highly recommend the new Air. Just be advised that it does not have an IR sensor of Backlit keyboard. Also, if you use Ethernet, be sure to buy the USB adapter. Same goes for the Superdrive if you plan to use DVD's.
