Sure, save $5 at Amazon. Woohoo!

Actually, no tax is helpful, and $3.99 overnight shipping is sweet (if you're a Prime member). Of course, if you want to configure it, you have to go with the Apple store. I saved $200 buying at Amazon.

Why do you not feel the pricing is fair?

Too expensive for what you get. Apple makes up about 5-10% of the market, Apple could easily get more if they dropped the price. Not to Dell levels, but not the insane levels they are.

How can Apple claim their laptop is "Pro" when it doesn't even have a dedicated GPU?

So ifixit's teardown is up and they claim the CPU is a 2629, which is a 35W quad core with 4 MB cache. Something doesn't jive.

That is a bit strange.

On another note, I will probably be getting a refurbished MacBook Air once Lion ships and a HP notebook when the models with the HD 6770M ship. Two computers is going to be better than one around here. Windows is too much of a premium to run on a Mac.

It does have a dedicated GPU, except for the 13". And if you think ANY 13" computer is "pro," you are mistaken.

And no one pays their bills with market share. Apple prefers total profits, and reasonably so.

I purchased the base model "thunderbolt 13" Macbook Pro (i5) and have installed window 7 ultimate 64 on it.

I can play fallout: new vegas in native resolution on "High" settings (with AA & AF off) at about 30fps.

I am a highschool student, and i mainly use my computer for homework, surfing the web, skyping, and i on installing logic express or pro to use with my band, i am really into doing things with music, will the $1199 13" be good for me?

Thank you, Phil

My girls all qualified for the education discount, so you should
be able to save a bit buying through the education store online
or present your student I.D. at the store.

If your family has a faculty member, that also works

or you may be able to save having the school order it for you.

One thing you should understand clearly is that if you
purchase Logic Express or Pro with the student discount, it will not be
upgradeable once Logic 10 is released whenever.

Okay, than maybe i shuld get the computer with the student discount and logic without it. If if i get logic without it, would i get the upgrade for free, or at a discount price when the new version comes out?

I had hoped for some more reasonable antiglare pricing, but it looks like I'm out of luck. The cheapest MBP antiglare option is $1800 + $150 = $1950, which is a bit much for me.

I actually really like the MBA screens -- they're less glossy than MBPs, so maybe that's really the best option for getting an antiglare screen.

It's not about racism - it's that Apple products are made on cheap labor. If Apple was truly premium, we'd get Made in the USA.

Apple just gets a cheaply made PC, slaps OS X on it and charges a premium price? Apple is horrible. There is no reason Mac prices should be so high. OS X is only $130, which is about the same as Windows 7 (correct me if I am wrong), so OS X cannot be the reason!

I'm all for supporting the US economy, but made in the USA is not a guarantee of quality.

Do you mean inexpensively made? Maybe, I don't know what it costs Apple to make their laptops, but they're among the nicest built machines I've ever handled. I hover over my computer for hours at a time, so I want the best experience I can afford. If I had an hour-long commute every day, I'd use the same logic for my car purchase and buy a BMW or something similar. I'm guessing you hate BMWs, too.

Then why does Apple name the 13 inch computer MacBook "Pro?"

Apple can cut the price and make beefy profits, especially because of the more accessories and such they will sell. Apple will make more profit selling 2 MacBook 13 inch Pros for $1000 each than only one for $1200.

Price is the number one thing holding people back from buying a Mac. Macs don't really offer anything that makes them so much more expensive.

Who cares about my opinion..(rhetorical)

Ok, first off, I think it's stupid to post why you won't be buying something on a forum. I just want to express my dismay of the new MacBook release. Just to get it out of my system.

Apparently I'm more concerned with the display resolution than I am with everything else. I was all ready to buy a new MBP 13" if it had a ~1400x900 resolution. Regardless of everything else.

Now, I'm almost disappointed to be saying that I'm going to be buying a MBA 13" C2D in spite of this release. The new MBP 13" has an i7 even! It would have been perfect with the higher resolution. I would have bought it and been extremely happy.

But it looks like I'm going to be buying a MBA 13" knowing that everything about it other than weight and screen resolution is inferior to the new MBP.

I know nobody really cares but I was all psyched to get a new MBP 13" for $1500 today and it turns out I'm going to be getting an $1800 MBA. I was THAT close to getting my perfect computer.

Damn you Apple!

10,000+ is simply wow!!!!

For those of you thinking this is not much of an upgrade. . . They are faster than last years iMacs and Mac Pro's

New MacBook Pros get GeekBenched. Outrunning last year’s Mac Pros

Some lucky people out there in Internetland are Geekbenching their new MacBook Pros Quad i7s with average Geekbench scores coming up right around 10,000

The 2.0 GHz Quads coming in a little lower obviously at around 8000 while the new dual core i7s hit about 6000. Interestingly, that’s a lot higher than last year’s top end models which were closer ro 5000 (below)! In fact, have a look at where these new laptops fit in Apple’s lineup:

Good god, these new MBP's are crazy fast! Assuming the tests were all done on standard HDD's and not SSD's, but still, wow!!!

UPDATE: sorry, I misunderstood initially how Geekbench did it's test measurements, so that is why I striked out the text above.

Because "MacBook Toy for Rich Kids" doesn't have as good a ring to it?

Pros aren't going to buy the 13" to do serious work.

********. Look at Apple's profits vs. all these other companies that have adopted your strategy, and compare their profits.

Price is the number one thing holding people back from buying a Mac. Macs don't really offer anything that makes them so much more expensive.

Also ********. The number one thing holding people back from buying a mac is years of indoctrination in a completely different operating system that works just fine for most of them.

just to throw in my (ecstatic) 2¢- I purchased the 2.7GHz SB Core i7 version of the 13" MacBook Pro this afternoon after unloading my base-config (2.4GHz C2D) previous generation MacBook Pro over the weekend, and it absolutely blows my old MBP's performance out of the water... I'm in the process of running a batch encode of my lossless music library to QuickTime AAC, and whereas typical encode speeds averaged between 25-28x for just the 2-core process, this new processor is averaging closer to 27-30x while having double the threads running (total of 4)- and with only an additional 300MHz!

and processor speed improvements aside, I've already been able to take advantage of the more than 4x resolution FaceTime HD webcam in a chat, and there is a very obvious improvement in video quality... graphics? no loss in quality, at least given the fact that I can't perceive any difference in smoothness of full HD video playback between this computer and my old one (which is about as far as I'm going to be taxing the GPU since I don't do any gaming at all), so I have no complaints.

that said, I'll have to post an add-on to my "first impression" review once I've had a chance to test out the new Thunderbolt port, but so far, this is turning out to be a very worthwhile purchase!

Uh, sure.

I still gawk at the price tag. Posted from my MacBook.

I would prefer to switch to more web based services then get dragged down even deeper into the Apple product incest feedback loop.

Thus, Apple should call it a "MacBook." But Apple - as usual - has to be misleading.

Apple's profits come from iPads and iPods and iPhones. Macs make up some, but even Apple knows where the real money is (which is why Macs are almost neglected now).

Ever talked to anyone who wanted a Mac? Most will not get it because of its price - why get a $1200 computer when you can get a $600 one that can do all the stuff the $1200 can do, and many times better?

As well as prejudice against Macs stopping them from ever trying them. Which means they never come to the realisation that it's actually worth a couple of hundred dollars extra to have a rigid, thin, light computer with well-rounded specifications, and a wonderful, clean OS without bloatware, and a lot of fully featured extra software.

I will never understand why people who don't intend to buy an Apple product feel the need to come on this forum and tell us all very loudly. It's not like your hate of Apple's products is going to rub off on the rest of us level-headed folk.

Although I admit, I hate anything with a screen size between 4" and 14". Except the MBA's SSD. That's cool.

Shrug, here in Australia, the MBP prices are lower than ever. Yay for the crappy American economy!!!

I assume the hard drive is still easy to upgrade in the MBP? If so, buy an SSD and stick it in your MBP and you'll be even more amazed at the speed.

I'm confused...

Are you trying to say instead of encoding one movie at 27x on your old CPU, you're encoding two movies on your new CPU at 29x?

ie. Are you saying the Sandy Bridge CPU is roughly twice as fast at video encoding than the old C2D?

+1

same here. Apple will def. have to include LP+Lion, I wonder how they're going to milk the cow after the next MBA update
So I'll wait and get a MBA. Today's 13" update is not good enough, although it's not as horrendous as some people claim (come on they have i5s ;) ), but it's just not much better than the last one. They had a years time to improve, and they did little.

Probable because Apple has been too concerned with iOS devices and has put real computing on the back burner. I really wish they would put more resources back into what made them a premium computer company.

I cant imagine ever running Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, web browser and iTunes at the same time on an iPad but that seem to be the direction Apple wants to go.
