One reason is that there is a fairly large education market for non-Pro iPads where all the kids in classes use regular plug-in headphones...

And why poo poo on adults who regularly use plug-in headphones........?

:)

And yes!!! It has a 3.5 mm jack! Just when I thought that Apple killed iPad as music production machine! :)

Pigs do fly, after all. :)

Yes that 3.5mm jack is needed for music production!! I have 2018 iPad Pro with no jack and the small latency with bluetooth stops everything!! I never thought I'd miss the headphone jack!

I’m surprised by the amount of hate for these new iPads (that I’m still surprised after 16 years on macrumors probably means I’m not that bright, but what can you do). The mini got pencil support and a 4 (!!) generation newer processor. The air is a very good bridge between the A10 iPad (a 2016 processor) and the very pricy pro, which most people don’t need.

And the low end ($329 ipad) and high end (FaceID pros) both remain available. How is this a bad thing?

I guess my first choice would have been the base iPad to go to an A11 and 10.5” at $329 and kill the 2017 Pro and the 2018 base iPad, but this is still good.

Because people here are idiots?

“I like my iPad Air, but not as much as I like my 2019 iPad Air.”

Or even just “new iPad Air”.

iPads are not the only products that get regular updates without being numbered like a sequel each time. People manage to compare cars of different years or even laptops including MacBooks. It’s not that difficult.

Not good comparisons. Cars not only look rather/radically different between model runs but also using the year is rather universal/standard when comparing car models.

iPads/MacBooks are not named by years but also they look rather alike. And people frequently get confused comparing their (2012) MacBook Pro to their (2016) MacBook Pro without a cheat sheet or having to look things up first.

We’re not talking about buying apples in a grocery market where you can walk in the store and ask for a honeycrisp apple and not need to care to know a vintage/year.

I hope not, if 2GB is correct then one might as well buy the half price a10 ipad as ram is likely to be the limiting Factor at the same time in the future for both iPads.

If that's true it's planned obsolescence. Memory costs nothing (my mid-level phone has 8GB).

once more apple makes you choose between too little or too much storage.
256GB is perfect for me. I can upload lots of movies, my entire music library, my entire photos library and still have plenty until the day they start offering 512GB in the non-pro models.

I am glad the specs are not all too different than those of my iPad Air 2. 2 speakers - I already have an external bluetooth speaker. I welcome the bigger screen (though I’d have been even happier with a “budget” 13” iPad). I am not crazy about the pencil and the keyboard, that keyboard looks funny.

Would get one on Day 1.

How long does your amazing phone with 8GB of RAM get software updates?

A year, or two, if you are lucky?

*That’s* planned obsolescence.

You invested in an iPad Pro for music and don’t even own an I/O interface? You’d be the first person I ever heard of that didn’t.

This is great. Affordable entry level iPads with as much of the latest tech as possible. These are fantastic mid-range machines. And the mini finally got an upgrade.

Credit where credit is due.

I hope that we similar things happening with the iPhone range too.

I suspect the new iPad Air would have 4 GB in RAM since it has almost the exact same design and features as the 2nd gen 10.5" iPad Pro from last year except for the 4 speaker audio.

Where is it stamped on an iPad so that 4 years later one can easily know it’s a “2019 iPad Air 2” vs a “201? iPad Air 2?” Why should the customer be expected to memorize what model/year it is, or be required to lookup a designator like A1xx that’s barely legible on the back of the iPad, assuming you have one of each to look at? What’s wrong with iPad Air 3? Too “it just works” for today’s Apple?

:)

Is the year/model stamped somewhere on MacBooks or other laptops?

Just ordered the new Mini. That is perfect size for my daughter. She had the mini4 but it was starting to become really slow when using it since a while. That will improve greatly :)
What was she doing with it? We have an iPad mini 2 and the only major problem we have is that the lightning connector doesn’t easily accept cables anymore so it is difficult to charge.

Not every car undergoes a redesign each year. I’ve owned a 2012 and 2015 Elantra, and aside from the colour the two cars were indistinguishable inside and out.

I don't think you know what "exact" means. The 2019 Air only has 2 speakers and no "pro-motion" 120hz screen. I doubt it has 4GB of RAM. That's currently in Pro territory, especially not at that price.

Airpods are surely going to announced at the forthcoming special event as they’re a big seller for Apple.

I think these new iPad machines are great but they’re not really worth any stage time.

Once again, it’s typical for people to know and say their car years when speaking of their car. Commercials speak of “2019 Ford Explorer.” The year is a typically used differentiator. Not so for minimalist Apple.

And it includes a laminated display, True-Tone display, stereo speakers and the A12 Bionic processor from the XR/XS. Nice.
Stereo speakers means it still has only two, though, as opposed to the four speakers on iPad Pros so no real improvement there for the new Air.

Have you tried audio over the Lightning port? If so, how’s it?

Audio over lightning sounds fine, I have tried it. However he says he has the latest iPad Pro and that one replaced the lightning port with a USB-C so for him it's actually audio over USB-C and not too many USB-C headphones or audio cables exist in the market yet.

I know Apple tends to skimp on RAM. That said, the XR has 3GB and I think the likelihood that Apple will go below that in these new mid-range models are pretty low. At the $400/500 price mark though, I think 3GB is more likely than 4GB.

I agree. Wouldn't it cost Apple more money to limit the RAM to 2GB rather than use the standard 3GB that Apple is already mass producing for the iPhone Xr A12?

If it is about differentiation between the Air and the Pro, Apple can simply make some of the new iOS13 features only available on Pro models.

My point too was it’s difficult to easily differentiate MacBook pros vs other pros easily, and now MBAirs vs MBAirs. Could be the same issue for PCs if makers keep calling theirs the “Acer 290x” (made up model since I don’t follow PCs) that look largely similar over a decade+ run.

Yeah sorry I hadn't realized about the pro-motion 120 Hz screen when I made that comment (though I did mention the 2 vs 4 speakers). But everything else is the same on both the new Air and the 2nd gen Pro so I still think the Air would have 4 GB in RAM. Every flagship has had it for two years, it was just about time for the entry level iPads to catch up.
