Waze: Free. 4 1/2 stars (1,104 reviews). Top of the Feature Section. And Apple license their data for maps.

It is beyond me, why Apple didn't buy Waze. It's the best GPS application in the market between the free and non free. Adding a mapping function and all the bells and whistles should have been a walk in the park in the first place.

Waze is a solid product and its best feature is that it's socially based. I love the fact that not only it tells me if there are accidents on the road or cops hiding behind a sign, but it warns you of traffic in real time, weather conditions, and it works great!!

Still it's good they are putting Waze on the map by promoting it the way they are.

This is not a mistake but a case of fraud, when they adv how great and awesome their maps are etc etc. and then launch it and sell it and i find out they lied and its in beta state, none functional in 90% of the world thats called fraud simple as that.
Give me the same app with all the goods they promised me when i was buying their phone for free and i will forgive their "mistake".

Would you call Vista a mistake, or fraud? It was advertised to do oh so many things without crashing miserably with kernel panics. It didn't function that way, at least initially, just like maps. Was that fraud?

It's certainly not fraud -- it works for people. It may not work for you, at least to the level of your satisfaction, but the function is still there. The quality of the product may not be top notch, but poor quality != fraud when there was no implicit promises for the quality of said features. Being in "beta state" is simply a title. The issue is clearly database side, and the mistake was that they launched too soonwith too many issues. There are other options from third parties in the meantime, and the maps databases will improve no doubt.

The irony of course is the sheer stupidity of those screaming the loudest. You'll never want Apple's maps in the first place (I don't) -- the reason? The only company with good maps data is google, and look how long THAT took to assemble -- they have street view (and in-building views too), which is something Apple will never come close to bar them licensing that data from Google to use in their own app (which won't happen).

This is such a pain in the ass. I was just on vacation in London and upgraded to OS6. While I was out and about, I tried to get transit directions and - boom - it wasn't there anymore!

Apple is the new Microsoft. Makes me want to switch to Android.

Go ahead switch.

Agreed!! This is the lowest I've ever seen from Apple, software-wise.

Also, I assume lots of you who say it's not that bad live in the US. I am an American living in Japan, and iOS 6 maps is absolute garbage for this country. They should just say "Screw it" and bring back Google maps till their own Maps app is ready in a year or two. I love Apple, but they totally dropped the ball on this, and FORCING us to continue to use their incomplete version of maps is absolutely unacceptable.

I will say though I like how it scales better and loads faster, but that's it.

I dont see people whining at Google for having the OLDEST maps application of their versions on the iPhone. Nobody whining because there were no turn by turn directions or any of the other stuff that Google already has on Android.

Now Apple releases an app that needs more work, that didnt cost anyone A PENNY and people are crying about a couple of bugs??? Jesus Christ. Granted the App had some bugs, (the maps it pulled for my house had me on another state), but I use Waze, so no buggy.

It's not a big deal.

Ummm. No. How much did you pay for the Maps app again? In fact how much you paid for iOS6 (excluding buying a new iPhone 5).

I'll tell you how much... zip, zilch, nada.

That's not true. Maps is an important part of the Iphone. A smartphone without mapping solution is less worth than a smartphone with mapping solution and therefore every buyer of the Iphone paid for Apple maps...

Now might be an excellent time for Google to submit their maps app to the app store... for a price!

I think that they should charge for it too. And I hope, but doubt, that when it is released, it has the "tie-in" feature Apple has been touting to their new Maps app. That would alleviate some of the problems.

Question: Why doesn't Apple just re-enable data gathering from Google? Or would this not fix any problems because it's not designed to work together with Google?

Every other high end smartphone is 720p with a larger screen. The iPhone 5 feels cheap and flimsy in your hand.

And as far as old tech, what does the iPhone 5 give you that the iPhone 4 didn't 28 months ago besides Siri, a slightly better camera, a bigger screen that's crappy compared to the competition, and LTE, which Apple is years behind on. That's a pretty small list for 28 months of innovation, and the competition has been busy in that time.

- Apple releases new maps
- "This is useless crap! I want Google maps back!"
- Apple apologizing
- "Never had a problem with it, I always loved it"

That's because it wasn't Google's app. And yes, prior to iOS 6, people were "whining" about the poor state of Apple's map application, not the backend data it was using.

It IS a big deal when it renders that app useless for search in many areas. The other day, I had to drive to a train station to pick someone up. The new app couldn't find the station. I had to find it myself by manually scanning for it in the general area where I thought it was.

On another note, I haven't heard of Waze, and I am gonna check it out. Hopefully they have good data for Japan. :)

God you people are a bunch of moaners. If you don't like Maps then use one of the free alternatives.

The alternatives don't fix Map Kit applications. Nothing can fix Map Kit applications. If you use applications which use Apple's Map Kit framework to enable map usage in the app, you're stuck using Apple's maps.

Honestly, some people 'eh.

Right back at you there.

So they remove the worlds #1 maps application in place of theirs. They admit theirs is bad. And still dont give us the world #1 maps application back.

The web version is NOT the same.

I am from Hong Kong, we can use Google Map in iOS 6 with street view by special telecom service provider (SMC-HK) here.:D

I hope Google Official Web Map app will be available in iOS 6 before November. ;)

This confirms there truly is an issue and that customer complaints/feedback are warranted. I find it hard to beleive Tim cook would go through the trouble of not only admiting Apple fell short of its "Own" expectations but also offer up competing products.

Smart move on the part of Cook and was needed to diffuse the situation.

Perhaps you can help everyone downgrade their devices back to 5.1.1? No? Didn't think so.

Vista sucks but you know what I could always do? Reinstall XP. How many iOS users know how to downgrade? How many are even able to? (Is Apple still signing 5.1.1?)

The new phone users aren't the ones getting screwed here, they have no expectation of at least the functionality that Google Maps provided, it's the existing ones that upgraded and weren't warned that their upgrade is going to cripple them.

How are you crippled? There are alternatives.

Pin a Nokia map shortcut to your screen.

Done. How embarrassing.

Just had a quick look, in my area Nokia's is worse than Apple's. Google has everything spot on as far as I can see though, so it's not as if we don't have access to any good maps.
