This is absolutely without a doubt the fault of the media and its scramble for headlines. Apple Maps works fine. No it's not as refined as Googles maps but it's also brand new. The problem is... no one has any patience especially these younger kids. And they are the most vocal.
Apple is smart enough to counter the allegations directly and swiftly. It's smart Public Relations and they will be JUST fine in a few months.
Why is it that everytime Apple screws something up, there's always a bunch of people to claim it's a fabricated story to make headlines ?
You say Apple Maps works fine but then say it's not as "refined as Google's maps". Guess what, that's downgrading your user's experience, it's exactly what the headlines state it is!
And younger kids ? What's your age sir ? I'm 33. It's not that I don't have patience, it's that my stuff doesn't work anymore. Apple downgraded my experience and broke some apps I use with these maps. Now I'm stuck waiting for them to fix it, which could be a couple of months (missplaced POIs/clean up of redundant POIs) to a couple of years (updating the mapping data with missing streets/roads) to never (the "pretty" rendering which makes the maps harder to read).
So seriously, don't tell me that "everything is fine". If you think its fine, then state your opinion as such, don't present it as a fact that applies to everyone and don't accuse the news media of "fabricating" a story when it's obvious that there is a story here. You just don't seem to like it.
That's too bad, some of you younger kids need to learn Apple isn't perfect.

10.0-10.2: Would have been a disaster if they'd stopped shipping and supporting MacOS 9 the day 10.0 came out. But they didn't - first there was OS X Server (which was a new product line), then there was a public Beta, then, new Macs shipped with both 9 and 10 in a dual-boot config for some time, and after that 10.0 offered 'classic mode' to support OS 9 apps pretty much until the Intel switch.
If they'd taken a similar approach with Maps then this would be a far, far different debate.
Something I've said quite a few times in the last few days. No one seems to think about this scenario. Maps could have been a "Preview", heavily marketed and publicized (front page of their site, both WWDC/iPhone keynotes) and an optional download from the App Store like iBooks and some other Apple stuff.
That way, they would have gotten willing users to test out the maps, report problems and start crowd-sourcing. And really, with Apple's fan base, there would have been plenty of people doing it (heck, all the people saying "Maps are fine even though they're lesser than before!" here would have used it right ? Money where mouth...).
Leave Map Kit alone so not to break existing 3rd party NON-MAPS applications (kids, the problem isn't just the Map applications, it's the non-Map applications! There are no ways to fix this currently). Leave the default Google Maps in the OS. And after the most glaring issues are taken care of, make Apple Maps default (iOS 6.1 or 7, depending on the time frame).
This would have taken the pressure off of Apple, changed the whole media outlook on the situation and probably netted them quite a few more happy users willing to crowd-source for them instead of irrate users giving them the finger and saying "we won't be pawns in your game and won't help with your stuff".

I live outside the USA (in Madrid, Spain), and since i´ve been using Apple Maps i can´t find any problems in my city: turn-by-turn guide ok to all my destinations and it find my basic point of interest (university, gym, supermarket...). I know Apple has to fix MANY reported mistakes, and new Maps is far away from Google Maps, but, for me, it works ok. Apple Maps is not the best solution, but definitely, it´s not as horrible as many people say.
Because your experience in 1 city with some POIs reflects the experience of every other user out there right ?
I was standing outside my carrier's store a week ago and Apple Maps was telling me that the nearest one was 2 miles away (another location for my carrier in Montreal). Yeah...
I have not read any stories on here that were exagerated. What people say is broken usually is broken in maps. Some of it goes all the way back to June and DP1, feedback was provided and fixes still haven't been done.
