I live outside the USA (in Madrid, Spain), and since i´ve been using Apple Maps i can´t find any problems in my city: turn-by-turn guide ok to all my destinations and it find my basic point of interest (university, gym, supermarket...). I know Apple has to fix MANY reported mistakes, and new Maps is far away from Google Maps, but, for me, it works ok. Apple Maps is not the best solution, but definitely, it´s not as horrible as many people say.

Do you have any idea at how pathetic your post is? LOL

I have a suggestion for everybody who finds that their panties are in an uproar. Return your phone, buy something else and quit with your pissing and moaning.

Understand that for every single person complaining about Maps, there are *thousands* of people using it and enjoying it each and every day.

The only pathetic here is you because you can't admit something so obvious, other than that i am not going to give a report of what i do to you or any other "you" in here or anywhere else.
But thats the way things are when you have nothing else to say you call facts "moaning" thats your defense and lets not forget "give it back" or "go buy an android".
A true costumer and fan is not someone who buys everything that a company sell and praise her even when it does huge mistakes, but the one that will help the company to recognise and by that fix their mistake faster, imagine iphone 5 launches millions and millions devices sold(as it did) and nobody say a thing about the maps, everybody is happy even when the maps are so messed up,do you thing apple will come out and admit something that no one complained about?or that they would do their best to fix it asap?

Well i said what i have to say,you can keep living in your dream world where everything is peechy in apple and let others live in reality and when they see faults to yell at apple for doing them and demand to fix them fast.

Definition of fraud:A false representation of a matter of fact—whether by words or by conduct, by false or misleading allegations, or by concealment of what should have been disclosed—that deceives and is intended to deceive another so that the individual will act upon it to her or his legal injury.

Fraud is commonly understood as dishonesty calculated for advantage.
Do you find similarities with the presentation of maps from apple?Still no?
Have a nice day.

This question assumes that Google is just sitting around doing nothing while they collect and update data to "catch up". Google has been working aggressively on it's maps this whole year and has now more incentive than ever to continue doing so.

It's the classic logical paradox:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeno's_paradoxes

Every time Apple gets to where Google was, Google will have moved ahead. So Apple can never catch up, even if Apple works twice as fast as Google.

And the tortoise always wins if it gets a head start.

Actually Google is lacking in some respects. After iOS maps they had to add better images to their lacking maps

Can we finally just let this go and accept the fact that there are other options and that Apple is working to fix it?
Your basic thought is excellent, I most certainly agree.

However, it's Apples arrogance that's brought this on, and it's not going away anytime soon.

It's not up to us, Apple buried themselves. Frankly the push back they're experiencing is long overdue. They've been caught & now it's time to pay.

This is absolutely without a doubt the fault of the media and its scramble for headlines. Apple Maps works fine. No it's not as refined as Googles maps but it's also brand new. The problem is... no one has any patience especially these younger kids. And they are the most vocal.

Apple is smart enough to counter the allegations directly and swiftly. It's smart Public Relations and they will be JUST fine in a few months.

Why is it that everytime Apple screws something up, there's always a bunch of people to claim it's a fabricated story to make headlines ?

You say Apple Maps works fine but then say it's not as "refined as Google's maps". Guess what, that's downgrading your user's experience, it's exactly what the headlines state it is!

And younger kids ? What's your age sir ? I'm 33. It's not that I don't have patience, it's that my stuff doesn't work anymore. Apple downgraded my experience and broke some apps I use with these maps. Now I'm stuck waiting for them to fix it, which could be a couple of months (missplaced POIs/clean up of redundant POIs) to a couple of years (updating the mapping data with missing streets/roads) to never (the "pretty" rendering which makes the maps harder to read).

So seriously, don't tell me that "everything is fine". If you think its fine, then state your opinion as such, don't present it as a fact that applies to everyone and don't accuse the news media of "fabricating" a story when it's obvious that there is a story here. You just don't seem to like it.

That's too bad, some of you younger kids need to learn Apple isn't perfect.

10.0-10.2: Would have been a disaster if they'd stopped shipping and supporting MacOS 9 the day 10.0 came out. But they didn't - first there was OS X Server (which was a new product line), then there was a public Beta, then, new Macs shipped with both 9 and 10 in a dual-boot config for some time, and after that 10.0 offered 'classic mode' to support OS 9 apps pretty much until the Intel switch.

If they'd taken a similar approach with Maps then this would be a far, far different debate.

Something I've said quite a few times in the last few days. No one seems to think about this scenario. Maps could have been a "Preview", heavily marketed and publicized (front page of their site, both WWDC/iPhone keynotes) and an optional download from the App Store like iBooks and some other Apple stuff.

That way, they would have gotten willing users to test out the maps, report problems and start crowd-sourcing. And really, with Apple's fan base, there would have been plenty of people doing it (heck, all the people saying "Maps are fine even though they're lesser than before!" here would have used it right ? Money where mouth...).

Leave Map Kit alone so not to break existing 3rd party NON-MAPS applications (kids, the problem isn't just the Map applications, it's the non-Map applications! There are no ways to fix this currently). Leave the default Google Maps in the OS. And after the most glaring issues are taken care of, make Apple Maps default (iOS 6.1 or 7, depending on the time frame).

This would have taken the pressure off of Apple, changed the whole media outlook on the situation and probably netted them quite a few more happy users willing to crowd-source for them instead of irrate users giving them the finger and saying "we won't be pawns in your game and won't help with your stuff".

Because your experience in 1 city with some POIs reflects the experience of every other user out there right ?

I was standing outside my carrier's store a week ago and Apple Maps was telling me that the nearest one was 2 miles away (another location for my carrier in Montreal). Yeah...

I have not read any stories on here that were exagerated. What people say is broken usually is broken in maps. Some of it goes all the way back to June and DP1, feedback was provided and fixes still haven't been done.

I can see that if you are in a place that hasn't been updated, but as more iPhone users pull maps this will be corrected.
The maps for the whole country are so inaccurate it will take 5-10 years before the new app gets back to the level Google Maps was a few years back.
Unless of course Apple realizes that they need to do what Google did here, which was to work with the best mapping companies in the country to get the best data possible. Or they could simply allow Google Maps back on iOS. iPhone owners over here don't need for turn-by-turn.

I think this piece by the BBC shows how much work Apple has to do to "catch-up" :

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-19536269

Simply put, Google has put in place a lot of processes and people to make sure its mapping is update to date and accurate. They have stopped relying on 3rd parties and do a lot of the work internally. Heck, people saying that "Google Maps" haven't been updated for years need to simply look at this chart :

_62786429_googlemaps.jpg

Google is a moving target. It has made a lot of the mistakes and learned from them. Apple will need to go through all of those mistakes and learn those solutions again unfortunately. Not to mention Google has access to a lot of more users through its web interface and availability on multiple platforms. As it stands, Apple only has iOS users to crowd-source.

I never relied on google as my only source for maps when they were on so I still have the other but apple maps in ios 6 rock for me, never an issue.

It doesn't even say recalculating when I make a different turn she just starts naming new streets, I love it.

Interesting stuff - I didn't realise how much extra information Street View provided (which was probably quite silly on my part), and I already missed Street View in iOS 6 Maps (even before I noticed how crap the POI data was). The question is, will Apple invest enough to do all that stuff, or will they do what Google were doing a few years ago and rely on inferior, licensed data? And will they even try to move ahead of Google in terms of features (indoor maps, etc)? They certainly didn't with the old Maps app.

i believe most of them aren't even iOS users. they are just joining in the party to make noise.

Why would you believe that? Stop living in a bubble. Macrumors is not the universe of Apple users. Broaden your understanding of the world, young man/lady. One day you will graduate college and live in the real world, out of your parents home.

It seems youre in denial or have never used the maps feature yourself to become reliant on it over the years. The two apps are like night and day and not in a good way for Apple.

Many many smaller issues with apple-released products dont get anywhere near the same traction in the media that the maps fiasco has gotten.

When you have worldwide complaints and Apple racing to issue 3 press releases in less than a week of its availability, this clearly indicates that Apple in no uncertain terms realizes the severe magnitude of the problem and is trying to contain the damage by offering band-aid solutions.

Do you think Apple is stupid enough to go as far as offering competitors products if this were a non-issue from the highest levels of Apple?

What a low for Apple. Their arrogance got them. That garbage map app was not ready to be released.

Wow, you need to get a clue.

I thought this was a reasonable assessment of the issue, i.e., that it was being completely overblown...

A) There are flaws in Apple's Maps database.

B) These flaws very likely do not affect you in any way.

C) These flaws will be fixed and served up without you updating any software.

D) There is a lack of public transit information, which may or may not affect you, but is partially remedied by apps.

E) You now get free turn-by-turn navigation and instant links to Yelp pages — and no ads.

F) GPS-enabled Google Maps are still available on iPhones and iPads for free, through the Safari browser.

G) A Google Maps app for iOS will likely be here soon, too.

Apple will do just fine. ;)

It's missing a lot of points though. For one : missing data not only impacts Maps per se, but all other Map Kit enabled apps.

Why do people keep ignoring Map Kit. Google Maps on the web or as an app, or Waze or MapQuest doesn't fix my RunKeeper or other fitness/real-estate/commerce locators apps. :(

What's overblown about that ? What's overblown about this analysis :

www.mtonic.com/applemaps/

Missing cities in Ontario ? Pointing searches for Ontario in Canada to Australia ? Completely overblown ?

People need to stop trying to downplay this. Even Apple aren't downplaying this, you're not doing damage control, you're only inflamming the conversation.

Wow, a voice of sanity. :)

Sanity because he says its overblown ? Seriously guys, why are you apologizing for Apple ? You're doing a very poor job of it, and not calming down the situation at all.

Tim Cook did a much better job that all of you did. Leave the damage control to Apple's PR.

Guys. Comeon. The reports of iPhone 5s exploding and killing children is completely overblown. You know how the media loves to hate on Apple. They only do it for headlines and those Android boogeymen who hang around on Apple boards and make fun of us. Nothing more.

You want the truth? Look at the facts. Out of the millions of people who bought the new iPhone, only 45 kids have been killed. The amount of children who's lives have been cut short by the iPhone 5 is a marginal problem for a select whiny few in comparison to the hundreds of thousands of children who use it every day without being destroyed or horribly maimed.

The problem isn't with the iPhone killing kids. It's with the loud whining minority who just won't shut up about it. So your kid got killed? Who cares? I use my iPhone 5 every day and it's perfect. You don't like it, you can go out and buy a crapdroid phone.

What is it with Macrumors these days, huh? Android fans everywhere!
