Too little too late. The alternative maps can't be integrated to the rest of the OS as default maps, at best it gives a very crippled solution. As an owner of MacBook, iPod, iPad, and iPhone, I'm sorry, but this is not good enough. It honestly feels Apple does not care about customers outside US. I today decided to switch to Android. Google maps on Android here in Tokyo are absolutely amazing (way better than the old Google maps on my iPhone), I can't imagine Apple ever catching up (considering the total disaster of Apple maps here) with the detailed local Google data available here (e.g. building indoor maps and accurate public transport data). From the comments I understand there are a lot of happy customers, mainly in US. It works great for you, introduction of turn-by-turn navigation I understand it is great for you. But try to understand the world is bigger and more complicated than that. The market Apple maps now satisfies is less than 5% of the world population.

Am I the odd man out?

I actually really like the new maps app. Whereas the Google Map may be more detailed (they do tend toward geek over info), I rarely used it except in a pinch. They definitely did not have public transportation directions in 07, when I got my first iPhone. They're nice features, but I have my PATH app and my City Transit map app. And I never bothered to look at Google maps for that stuff. The flyover feature is slick and in many ways street view like. But more useful and what I've used several times already, is the surprisingly legible Siri narrated turn-by-turn directions. Yes, so far they are only driving directions. But this is a really cool start and I'm really looking forward to where it goes from here.

Oh, yeah, the flyover is SO super useful since you are superman and fly over cities all the time and navigate by birds eye view instead of us regular humans who walk on streets and drive on roads where Google's Streetview is infinitely more useful.

I, like the person you quoted have had no problems at all with the Maps app. I do not use it all that much, because I have a map in my head.

However, the real question is, are you reporting these issues using the "Report a Problem" button. If you aren't, you're part of the problem not part of the solution.

So, if I don't report it then I am also to blame? They should have released it in BETA form, and allowed the BETA TESTERS to help "Report a Problem". By releasing it to everyone half-cooked, they have taken away a working map system and forced everyone on iOS6 to become their Beta Testers. I'm sorry, I don't subscribe to your belief that because I found another solution and am not reporting these stupid glitches that I am somehow to blame as part of the problem.

When Scott Forstall demoed maps at WWDC did he ask iPhone and iPad users to be testers and report problems back to Apple? Did he even give any indication there could be problems with the app and to be patient while Apple is working to make it better? No the demo was perfect and certainly didn't give any indication the app would be this bad when iOS 6 was released.

As an end user it's not my job to be a beta tester and report problems back to Apple. Unless they want to put me on their payroll and pay me to do it. :)

I agree and the UK data is a disgrace. What on earth were they thinking releasing this half-arsed piece of junk?!

Apple has just earned some of my respect. Any company that does something like this is one that must be commended for not hiding behind press releases no matter how short it may last.

Wow...

Apple's maps are terrible. The easiest place in my area to get to and Apple's maps have me making unnecessary U-turns. It's nice it provided this list but Apple jumped too quickly into this particular area. Another year of development and it might have been a positive release.

Too little too late for what? Are you getting rid of your iPhone?

If you don't think you should do it then don't do it. Come here and vent for free. Your efforts won't go to waste. MacRumors uses the clicks to generate ad revenue.

More annoying than getting small towns in Ontario wrong is calling Edinburgh's 'haymarket' 'the haymarket' (and not showing how to report it). Also it seems to think the Scottish Prison Service is a restaurant. But then google maps had some strange results there too. We never had good transport information, so it always seemed to me that separate apps was a better way to go for that.

Apple Launches New App Store Feature Section for Alternative Maps

Haha. I bet there is a one to one correlation between all those who dissed apple for blocking Flash and those who are raising hell about the deficiencies of the new Maps.

I'm glad for the alternatives. As an iPhone 4 user the new maps don't give me voice directions. I'll be upgrading soon but waiting for my upgrade to become available

I've used this app twice. It worked great getting us into & out of DC. It even changed the directions when we went off the route. It also works in the locked screen.

As an aside, I'm not big on using GPS & prefer knowing where I'm going.

I keep the new maps app in a folder with my other super useful apple apps like compass, stocks, voice recorder, contacts, weather and all the rest!

but seriously there is alarmingly large number of landmarks, stores, and other locations missing off of apple's map compared to google. Since I updated to iOS 6 nearly every time I search for something in maps I get a "no results found" message in return. for the time being I have given up... (i know it will only get better if we actually use it)

thank goodness for the google maps web app and other great third party apps like garmin offline maps, vlingo and pano to fill in the gaps apple has left in my now "outdated" iPhone 4. the app store really does have excellent options when you look at all the wonderful third party app support though.

I really think I should be strong and wait it out until the damn iPhone 5s of 6 comes out.

Lord knows I'll never buy another Samsung smartphone. that awful at&t galaxy s would power itself off if it had been charging in the wall for "too long." and you had to charge it all the time because the battery only lasted 2 hours.

ok my lame rant is over.
