Don't mean to go off topic, but does anyone know why the Mac Pro's have a 'New' label like the new low cost iMac, and not the recently updated Airs?

Thanks!

For $200 more for a quad core and twice the storage the previous base model is still a better purchase for most people.

Ahh I sense the coming "apple is a business" replies.

Business is one thing, charging a fair price for a product is another.

As mentioned above, I am looking at the Apple Store's refurbished section now and a 2012 iMac can be had for cheaper, and it comes with 1TB storage and 512mb dedicated graphics.

This is the sort of specs I would expect to find in a mac mini refresh, not an iMac, which is supposed to represent an integrated computing solution. As such, it should provide specs which future-proof your desktop computing needs for the next couple of years, not saddle you with laptop specs.

Still no SSDs as standard? I find that absolutely ridiculous for an 'entry level' £900 desktop computer. Even Fusion Drive would have been better.

This machine isn't for you.

This machine is for organizations that buy huge numbers of iMacs that stay running 24/7/365 and rarely do more than operate Safari.

So in that case, the HDD is not really important, and the low power chip (which isn't a real ULV a-la Macbook Air, it's just a de-clocked desktop chip, they wouldn't design a brand new motherboard for that) make a huge amount of sense.

Who are these organizations?

Universities.

Hahahaha I really dont understand this, a ULV processor in a desktop system. Is more expensive and less performance than the desktop counterpart.
Maybe they are just clearing out stock.

Only problem is that you don't need 1100 machine to run your cash register or at the reception or school web terminal.

I've been in tons of offices where the reception desk is a cool, custom designed white curvy thing. Hell, this even describes every frozen yogurt place around here too. A black monitor saying DELL on the back just doesn't look right in those settings.

Predictably, all of those offices have iMacs (or sometimes iPads) as their front desk computer.

So you're trying to tell me people won't buy it for those uses? No, I'm saying I'm ALREADY seeing iMacs in those places. Having a cheaper option sure won't stop them in the future.

Stop succumbing to MHz myth. The i5 turbo boosts to 2.7GHz and in a desktop will stay there much longer. This is effectively a Mac Mini with a monitor.

You DO see the irony in your post, right?

For that price you could get a 11" macbook air and a monitor and get a PCIe SSD for free and have the portability if you need it. This new option makes no sense at all.

I was just thinking this... get an 11 inch base model with a 1tb external HDD and a 23 inch monitor for about the same price...

When will Apple release touchscreen iMacs?
Why would anybody want a touch screen desktop computer? It makes absolutely no ergonomic sense, and that's before you try to figure out how to keep the thing clean.
You might see a 12 or so inch iPad, and in the mean time there are options from Wacom for professional applications, but the company that produces a touch screen desktop will soon be updating that line when they realise it doesn't sell.

This is the first time I'm wonder "what in the world is Apple doing??"

An organisation wanting cheaper Macs in those quantities won't be shopping at the Apple online store; they would be working directly with whatever department is in charge of bulk purchases or something.

How does this compare to a faster processor and only 4 GB of RAM?

I would think 8GB of RAM and a slower processor on average makes more sense for casual users, no (?).

This could be a smart move by Apple.

I personally don't see the CPU speed as the bottleneck for casual computer users...or as other people pointed out for administrative tasks in large organizations / education (bulk purchases).

Maybe the Mac mini is next with a similar lower-end option?

21 Inch too damn Small

Am I the only one who wishes Apple would make a 23 or 24 Inch iMac and have that be the standard entry level model? 21 Inch screen at that price point is ridiculous.

I'm very surprised - this strikes me as nothing short of a terrible move. A dual core ULV iMac that is still on the wrong side of $1000?

Absurd.

And far too expensive for what it is.

Not to mention a 5400rpm hard drive. It'll be slower than the MacBook Air. Now that's a shame.

This should have been priced at $899 at the most. But hey, it's 5mm thin at the edges. LOL.

I'd agree if Intel had an i5 desktop Haswell processor that's only dual core and has HD Graphics 5000, but all of them are quad cores; I guess we won't know for sure until the mandatory tear-downs hit the net later this week, but it's possible Apple may have just re-purposed the MBA motherboard to use a ULV chip in the iMac case.

Maybe they had to save room for another price drop when retina iMacs come down... at THAT point they could do $999 for standard and $1199 for retina.

Mac Mini

Okay, I have to ask this. What are people so desperate for in the Mac Mini? Aren't the newer processors focused on power savings instead of performance? Is there some magic processor out that gives 200% performance boost and Apple is not using it?

Every damn post about computer updates and we see the same thing: "Where are the Mac Minis?!?!"

Mac Mini (i'm waiting as well) is always late with updates.
Displays are slower than Mac Mini's to update.
Not sure what they could've done for the MBA as the next processor from intel isn't here yet.
iMac update wasn't, it's a lower end addition and other models got price reductions (UK did anyway).
Apple TV is still a hobby - no point updating if there's not real addition to it
iPods are a dying market
iPad classic - see above!
