It doesn't matter what Apple does with the iPad at this point. I'm done.

The playing field has been leveled by their competition, and there is no reason for me to put up with a locked-down, more expensive device any longer.

Not to say others are wrong for choosing Apple, it's just that the choice is now not as obvious as it used to be.

For me it's either Sammy --I love their Android phones and want similar (and familiar) functionality with their tablets, or MSoft --Power, compatibility and flexibility (and a better UI in my opinion).

Majority of professional tools only run on Windows and Linux.

Really which majority of "professional tools" run on Linux? Last I checked AutoCAD runs only on Mac and Windows. That's one of the largest preferred drafting software tools.

And you're posting here telling us this....why? Shouldn't you now be enjoying Sammy, Android and M$ forums?

Wall Street worries when all (or most all) your eggs are in one basket (a phone). What if carries decide not to float the cost of a phone anymore? What if people see that android isn't as ecosystem locking? (I know what everyone wants to jump on, here, but you get the point). What if people figure out having an android phone and apple computers and tablets is fine and just works? No, apple is not doomed. They will do well, but things do come around sometimes.

People have already decided that having Android devices is fine. Android is "winning" remember? :)

But Apple still sells plenty of devices... and they make a ton of money doing so. It's better to be a profitable #2 than a money-losing #1

Yes... Apple makes 70% of their money from phones... but they've figured out how to make that an incredibly successful business. And the other 30% is still a huge business that many other companies can only dream of.

HTC makes nearly 100% of their money from phones... but they aren't really successful doing it.

Hell... there are over 60 smartphone OEMs... but only a handful actually make money.

Sometimes it's so rare that it's a special news story when a company makes a profit. And there are plenty of companies who don't.

Holy crap... those are the companies that you need to be worried about.

I'm not sure why there is always an obsession with 'growing' sales.

The iPad isn't something you need to constantly replace. I have the Air, I'm not willing to spend $600 or so to get the Air 2 just so it will go slightly faster and have the Touch ID.

I'm sure I am among millions of happy iPad owners who are not going to rush out out buy every new version that comes out.

This is exactly how I see this product line in light of all of the doomsday "iPad is Dying/Dead!" headlines. I'm still using my 4th gen iPad, and I'm just now starting to think about updating when the next gen is released this fall.

You might want to check again. AutoCAD 2016 no longer support Mac and the 2015 Mac version is stripped down in comparison. AutoCAD is a basic tool anyway relative to the other ones mentioned, ANSYS, etc.

You're missing the point. I was bringing up a point that AUTOCAD is on Mac and not on Linux as you suggested that Linux has all the major important productivity tools and that's simply not true.

Really sounds like you don't even want the Mac to have professional software as you are so willing to show that it's support is limited. And I just love how you never answered the question in the first place. Probably because you don't have an answer.

Before you post another untruth. Do your homework so you won't post nonsense. AutoDesk moved the product release cycle to coincide with OS X releases. 2016 is being released. Oh but you wouldn't know that. You're too busy trying to prove something.

Is that why the competition's machine all suck the big one, with abysmal build quality and many/most? having malware/viruses or security holes, baked in. Because that"s the tablets that are selling instead the top end from other makers... The sub $80, We Suck, so you don't have too, machines.

Whoa, which tablets are you referring to? It was clear he was talking about mid to high end tablets like the Galaxy and Surface, not a Poloroid tablet from Big Lots. And while I'm not a fan of Android, Samsung has some nice looking tablets but I can't say if those tablets are of good build quality without actually playing with it but if it's anything like the acer tab my mom has, then it must be decent.

And it really sounds like you want play the malware card, which is valid for Android with its lack of updates through most OEMs, but for Windows? A mature desktop OS now tweaked for tablets with constant updates forever with the upcoming Windows 10? Yea, no. With Windows 10, I can tell people who turn their nose on an iPad to get a Windows tablet instead of a truly bad cheap Android one. And they would get a pretty good experience for it too. Plus with Sigature Editions, for the average user, it will serve them just as well as an iPad would and have no crapware like an iPad. Not saying Windows is bulletproof, but it's nowhere as bad as people make it.

"Create and share your own Cookbook"

And they wonder why the iPad can't claw its way into the Enterprise market.

Not all tablets are created equal. And as PandaPunch mentions, I was referring to the good ones. I even gave specific examples.

Why do Apple hardcore fans take everything so personally?

The iPad is too limited in my opinion. But that is it. It is too limited and locked down for me. This is not a knock against the iPad user, but to the iPad itself. And even then it's a loose knock; the iPad is quite the capable, high quality device.

The point is, other OEMs, particularly Microsoft, Samsung, and Google (with their Nexus line) are providing perfectly viable (and in many cases, superior) alternatives to those of us who are not locked down into Apple's jail...er...walled garden and have other needs/wants.

I only realized this when I switched from iPhone to Sammy's Galaxy Note and S4 series. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least.

Apple at this point have (very intelligently) positioned themselves as a status symbol (much like BMW or Mercedes) without really offering anything exceptional or unique given that the devices have matured to an almost commodity-like state. They all do the same things, but differently. In the case of the iPad, it actually can do less, for the sake of simplicity and ease of use.

Which is fine, but I need more. Thank God for the alternatives.

I think it's just hardcore fans of anything will take any comment personally. I personally went in the opposite direction as you. I went from Android to Windows Phone and planning to go to an iPhone. There are issues with Android but they are my issues with the platform and no point in attacking the users of the Galaxies or HTC Ones because of my complaints with Android. That's so dumb, "Y u lik Android, Apple numbuh 1 unda son u dummie r-turd" why complain to you when I can tell Google or Apple what they can do so maybe I will be a repeat customer.

Fanboyism and it's emotional responses are so destructive to discussion it's not even funny. Well, I'm sure it's funny to the people banking off the free advertising because if people were having e-crusades that were filling up my bank account, I'd be rolling laughing everyday.

I'm a very happy iPad 1 user. It has iOS 5 that is surprisingly well supported.
I use it to make music and control my laptop. My kid plays games with it.

I will be upgrading my tablet on the day it runs OSX. And has at least 13" screen. But until then, i'll use what works.
