That's one tiny lineup. They're really going to struggle to bring people in, especially with Disney's huge range of recognisable franchises.

Netflix have nothing to worry about.
Netflix has a lot to worry about. If not due to Apple’s entry, atleast due to Disney’s entry. And remember, BlackBerry did not have much to worry about when the first iPhone was launched. In fact up until 2011, their revenue grew tremendously.

One thing missing from Apple since Steve died is the ‘why’. We get the what and the how but we rarely get the why. Why is Apple creating its own content? So they can charge people $5/mo is not an answer. Do Apple execs think there’s a dearth of good video content out there and Apple is best suited to fill that void? Because right now it seems Apple TV+ is nothing more than Apple having more money than execs know what to do with along with hardware sales going flat so execs are looking for any other way they can make money off existing customers. And then add in Wall Street being obsessed with recurring revenue streams aka “services”. To me the whys are all financial which I’m not sure makes a great product.

Umm I thought MR was the defacto Apple TV+ press site. In fact I'm sure it is.

As to why Apple is investing in this is simple: They know that hardware alone is not the future— the stuff you can do with it is. Apple TV+ is hopefully for them the meow of the cat that will bring more people to the platform using Apple hardware and keeping those that are already here sticking around.
It's the toy surprise in a box of Cracker Jack.

The why is to increase hardware sales. Notice how they haven't really released Apple TV+ app to anything other than Samsung. You can only watch these shows on an Apple device.

No, this is from About Apple Tv+ from Apple

"Any new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac capable of running the latest iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS purchased after September 10, 2019, from Apple or an Apple authorized reseller, is eligible."
If the ipod counts then the watch should - weird

AirPlay 2 requires an Apple device and all the TVs you mention except Samsung don’t have the Apple TV app yet so until it releases, you’re going to need an Apple device. Well except the website but who wants to stream through a browser?

And as I mentioned before, still no word on a release date for the Apple TV app for other devices besides Samsung.

Anyone know how they’re releasing the episodes? Is it gonna be all at once or weekly, or a few episodes at once then the rest weekly?

This.

Sadly, I think the “why” in this case is that they want to further lock people into their ecosystem.

I don’t know anyone who wants restrictions on what device they can use to watch a TV show. It works with software and music because there’s a lot of friction and annoyance for a normal, non-technical person to find, download, and install a piece of software or download an MP3 and add it to a music library or device.

I don’t know anyone who thinks watching a TV show on Netflix is overly convoluted and complex. If they’re bored with the content, they can move to Prime or Hulu, which also streams on many devices..... What’s my incentive for locking myself into a device-exclusive service?

Kinda weird that you can’t watch trailers for any of these shows on the “Trailers” app on the AppleTV 4K...

I’m actually quite excited for Apple TV+. I think that the wide variety of shows makes it so that there is something for just about everyone. The low price point of $4.99 a month is lower than Netflix and Disney+ and I think that will help Apple out in the long run. Personally, I’m really looking forward to watching ‘The Morning Show,’ ‘See,’ and ‘Truth Be Told.’ The trailers have been pretty promising thus far.

They've got 8 shows at launch. Disney+ is $2/month more and includes 7000 TV episodes, all of star wars including the new obi wan series which is a lot better than anything Apple has, MCU, hundreds of movies.

I'm actually looking forward to hearing more about Apple's Foundation series, but as of now, there's nothing of interest to me. I will be getting a new XR in the next month for a family member who's on my family sharing, so I guess I'm going to be one of the hundreds of millions of "paying customers" even though I won't be logging into the service at all. I guess that's fair, I log into Amazon Prime about twice a year even though I'm a "paying customer" for the service.

I will be signing up for Disney+ at launch though.

Netflix had nothing to worry about? I think Disney, Hulu, WB, Peacock are making Netflix worry a lot.

In the US maybe, but Netflix are so established now and have so much content in production I think they'll be fine.

I'm personall I'm the UK where streaming is less fragmented (so far). Things that might go to Peacock, Hulu or WB in the US end up on Netflix or Amazon here. We also have no Hulu, and no Disney+ (at least not until some unspecified point next year).

lol, a little overboard on the photoshop retouching on the morning show picture there

Netflix have nothing to worry about.

They are playing it very smart with the weekly releases. If the first episode of every show draws attention, people will flock to subscribe and won't be able to binge without being late to the party. Obviously not the scale of GoT, but people subscribed to see the weekly releases in lieu of binging.

Not exactly. They don't just "make up" $60 out of thin air. It's effectively a discount from hardware and moving it to software, which they've done for years with software and services that come with your iPhone like iOS, Maps. It's accounted for with deferred revenue.

I'm not an accountant, but the free Apple TV+ bundle has already been stated by Apple to have zero impact to earnings.

When you give away free services, you have to account for them. Apple isn't doing anything slimy. They also haven't reported any plans to give a running total of subscribers. I would guess they won't ever do it as it leads you down a bad path like iPhone unit sales. If they can keep it a secret, they likely (and correctly) will.
False. Apple will claim that Apple TV+ is a success, with subscribers in the tens of millions, without ever converting a single free user. By giving it away for free and counting it as services revenue, the service never has to succeed for it to succeed. That is as slimy as it gets. That affects the industry. It affects competition. It relieves pressure from Apple to do better than this in the video space.

Apple TV+ is a pitiful effort that no one ever asked for, that will not even stand or fail on its own merit. Apple knows what a pathetic effort it is, and how short it falls of what Apple customers want.
