I don't understand all the fuss that this isn't somewhat more of a major update.

With the amount of Apple news and rumours we all read, haven't you been able to tell when a major update is coming? Usually leaks about new cases\batteries etc.

Also plenty of news about Intel floating around the daily news sites, no new significant CPU upgrades recently...

32GB RAM? Does the chipset and CPU in these suckers technically support 32GB?

Major update on the way when we see news about new CPUs from Intel, and eventually after that leaks about some new parts. Same story every time...

Find me a more powerful GPU that uses 35W and I'll agree with you. Otherwise, it's a battery life vs. GPU argument and that's all a matter of personal opinion. As far as GPU power/watt goes I am not impressed with Nvidia's latest GT8xx GPU's.

You'll notice that these PC laptops that apple supposedly "can't keep up with" all have either worse battery life, worse display, worse processor, etc. something is always worse. OR they're more expensive.

So please take your ignorant uninformed bashing elsewhere.

Have you ever been able to buy a laptop that wasn't outdated within 3 months? I haven't. And I've bought a lot of laptops.

I don't know.As far i can see seems Broadwell shifted to the end of 2014 .
I hope Skylake is not 2016.
Basically i hope to see a quad in the 13 next year or before.

Good luck using a "Pro" machine without the (industry standard) LAN and VGA ports, and with only 2 USB ports (one for the headset and one for the mouse receiver and you're stuck...)

That' why "Windows switcher" keep buying the non-Retina MBP. Because they're used to being able to work with their computers.

Retina-MBPs - ridiculous, overpriced machines...

With all due respect, it is a rubbish.

1. LAN - you can buy a accessory cable.
2. VGA - as above. Besides all new displays have HDMI port, unless you are using "industry standard" ages old CRT.
3. Headset and mouse at USB? Kidding? Bluetooth.

Apple wouldn't enjoy the profit margins that they currently do if they went for 800M series chips this time around.
That could be the reason, or built up inventory or whatever.

I would've liked seeing at least as BTO option if not standard.

Why is everyone blaming Intel on this one? Since when has Intel assumed the driver role for Apple hardware updates? Apple actually goes to great lengths to downplay Intel on their hardware - no Intel stickers or even using Intel processor numbering system on their spec sheets. Apple is fully capable of delivering a great hardware upgrade by updating their industrial design or any of the other components in the MacBooks. They could have just updated the new processor later just like they swap out anonymous components all the time. Apple just sees Intel as one of its many nameless and faceless suppliers.

If I was going to buy one I would just wait a little bit and get it from the John Lewis department store as they give a 2 (or sometimes 3) year warranty as standard. Just means I can't use the Apple Store for repairs which is a pain when I'm travelling. I still think Apple are just being plain greedy with their 1 year warranty.

You live in the UK? Use the education store (you must know someone who is either a teacher, a student or works at an educational institution). If you buy through the online apple store for education in the UK you get three years of Applecare for free (minus the phone support part, but otherwise identical).

Actually it is quiet funny, that so many posters are so angry about this update. Seriously what did you expect? After the confirmed delay of Broadwell Chips, it was obvious, that the 2014 rMBP would be a little spec bump. The late 2013 already has Wifi AC, TB2, 4K Support. 32GB DDR4, IGZO, low energy chips, nothing is available. Why redesign the case, when there is nothing new to offer? The 850m/860m or newer could easily be included next year or they plan to kill the dGPU. There a plausible reasons for both scenarios. It would be smarter to lower your own expectations next time and buy when needed. Stop waiting for the one and only awesome machine.

32GB RAM? Does the chipset and CPU in these suckers technically support 32GB?

If they redesigned to fit twice the RAM chips, yes.
If they used the new higher density monolithic or non-monolitic modules, they would have to revise the firmware, like ASUS already did for their top motherboards.

No-one at Apple screwed it up. It's a speed bump to tide over until the next gen machine with Broadwell. Intel are offering faster CPUs at the same price, so Apple took the opportunity to refresh the range.

Designing a new logic board with Maxwell, writing firmware, updating the OS and Drivers followed by QA/testing all at the last minute due to a hitch with Intel production schedule is an epic waste of money if it's only for 6 months.

The 750M is fit for purpose, unless your a hardcore gamer. In which case go buy an MSI gaming PC that weighs a lot more and has a 2 hour battery life.

Yeah, it's a shame that the whiners have no idea how the real world works. "If it's out there, surely we can just slap it on like a sticker and everything will automagically work!"

I'm guessing we only got this update because:

-a small update for the Pros so they can make a big splash with retina Airs in a few months or so.
-Macs have been good sellers all year.
-they want to save a video bump for increased dpi in all-new Pro next year.
-increased battery benefits that's included with new gpu.
-make the most money they can.

Yeah, it makes sense. No sense fixing something that ain't broken, and no point throwing a ton into R&D for minute changes.

"Most exciting product lineup in 25 years" my ass!

With all of these silent spec bumps, the only things Apple has left to update via keynote are the iMacs, iPads, and the iPhone 6. The iMac is going to get the silent treatment as well. Actually, the only major update I see is the iPhone 6 as the iPad will be a minor spec bump.

I'm glad I switched to Android and Win8/Ubuntu. Android always receives new stuff every year, and new hardware upgrades yearly too. Not to mention, Android isn't six years behind.

Seriously, get outta here troll. What you don't understand is that PC's and Android devices have several competitors wanting the consumers to buy their version of the hardware; where as Apple does not have that problem and they are only competing with themselves. If you want to own a device based purely on specs, then go to Window-land and Android-land. You can have the best specs in the world for those few weeks, but your actual user experience may still leave something to be desired.

I'm here because the hardware works well, and paired with the software, the experience is amazing, and my workflow and productivity cannot be touched. It's a good thing the majority of the Mac owners out there prefer to have their machines work for them, vs. them working on their machines. Honestly, you (whiner) guys are impossible to please, and there's no point to spend who knows how much in R&D just to satisfy you for 2-4 weeks until the next shinier thing pops onto the market.

Would I love to have the latest and greatest everything? Of course... but I also understand that "satisfaction" is very temporary, and honestly focusing on that is a waste of time. You'd be better off chasing the unicorn at the end of the rainbow than to think you'd be able to buy something from Apple (or anyone) and completely satisfied with that purchase for the next 2+ years. Don't get me wrong, there are lots and lots of satisfied customers; but those people are focusing on the overall experience, not chasing the latest specs.

The GTX 850m has the same TDP as, and has better power management than the GT 750m.

Don't put someone down for talking rot, when the only one doing so is you, from a position of gross ignorance.

I did check my facts before posting. There's no official TDP from Nvidia that I can find. notebookcheck.net have the GTX850M at 40-45W and the GT750M at 35-40W.

I don't believe that counts as "gross ignorance".

When you refer to 'Mac' I awesome then you talk of market share of hardware? Microsoft has 0% of market share of personal computers. When you compare OS then of course Windows is higher, as they are installed on every non mac pc sold.
If you want to compare apples with well non apples, then try this one, what customers upgraded to when they had a choice, you'll find that mac users upgraded to Mavericks in over 50% of there install base, only 3% have upgraded to Windows 8.

I don't know why this "statistic" gets regurgitated. When one OS is free, and the other is not, you would expect a higher adoption rate.

I stopped reading the comments on AppleInsider for the same reason but I find this forum a whole lot more balanced.

Rather have Thick and Functional

HDDs are too thick to fit -.-

Oh my god, a half a inch sacrificed for more functionality. This illusion of thinless is freaking ridiculous and just that and illusion. What is the point of "thinless" if I have to lug around a million accessories (Portable CD and HD drive, SD Cards, etc...) to actually get "use" out of it.

It's not an illusion. It actually is thinner.

Most people don't need to lug extra accessories around, so for us the thinness and weight loss is much appreciated. For those that need more storage, optical media, etc., this is clearly not the device for them.

My '10 MacBook Pro has a 320GB hardrive and it's my work Machine. With all the apps that I have and around 25GB of photos I currently have around 80GB free (I have no music at all). I have three external hard drives but I do have some files on the machine (the ones I'm working on at a given time). BUT it's safe to say that I have OVER 128GB in apps.

So...no 128GB is not reasonable on a "Pro" Machine...IMO...

Um... I'm a "Pro" too. I make money directly from my work on my macbook pro developing iOS, Mac, and web Software. I currently have only ~80 GB used on my SSD.

"Pro" doesn't mean just one thing... there are lots of Pros that don't need massive drive space. If you are one of those that do, then... maybe you should buy the model that has a 1TB drive. Why complain that not all of the available models cater to your individual needs?

You are a learned Apple user:)
After a 1984 Mac with 128 KKKKKK, did I mention K? I kept upgrading etc. until I learned that it is cheaper to assess what one needs 3 years later and until then only do minor tweaks.
Usually the Mac waits for my input, but as soon as I wait for the Mac to process something I know , time go upgrade or get a new refurb.

Have been lucky with ebay stuff too.

Just added an OWC SSD to my 2008 MBP and love it. Feels like a new Mac for at least a year.

Apple Learned since the Apple IIe. ...I miss Lode Runner on my old amber display.

I think you misunderstood me. All I was saying was those people don't actually 'need' a MacBook Pro to do their work. They just buy them because they are the best laptops available.

To push a Macbook Pro to its full potential you would have to be doing something like 3D rendering and animation, video editing, music production etc. All those kind of jobs will fill up a 256GB SSD in no time. Even the iMac I use for photoshop, print-work and web design has well over 300GB used already and that only contains relatively small files that I access on a regular basis.

MacBook Pros are aimed at professionals, but only the top-spec model is really viable for professionals, that's all I'm saying.

This is nonsense... There are all manner of professional uses that do not include "3D rendering and animation, video editing, music production". Try compiling and running an iOS app on the simulator while running a server VM in the background on a MBA. "Pro" doesn't only mean what you think it means.

Actually, I thought the same way as you up until June 17, 2013 - when I bought and stuffed a 13" 2013 MacBook Air into my camera bag for my cousin's wedding in London. I also brought two USB 3 500GB Seagate Slim Drives to back-up the wedding photography. Thinness ruled on that trip, as did the MBA battery life. :)

There are lot of professional users who travel and love the thinness of the current MBPr.
