If you compare to industry standard bulk pricing, I see USB wall chargers in similar size/shape go for $1.25 ea when ordered in 10,000 quantities. So it probably costs them 50 to 60 cents to actually make.

Probably is my point, you don't know!

When I connect my ipad to charge, I get the "not charging" message, and charging the ipad for an hour only boosts the battery by 7%. I can charge my ipad using my apple charger in at least half the time.

Bummer, sounds like the iPad sees it as a 500ma charger.
Oh well, I have one of those chargers too, but I've only used it with my HP Touchpad.

I guess I could rig up an special charge cable someday to make the iPad see it as a 2A...

But I do know it costs less than what a bulk purchase is. So I can make an informed guess based on those facts. That's more than just tossing out a random number. In either case, Apple is still making a very large profit at $10

Yeah the thing is I have 4 of these touchpad chargers and all 4 of them work this way with my ipad. With my iphone or my batteries or other devices, they charge pretty quickly. Maybe its a quirk with my 3rd gen ipad, but the newer ipad charger I believe has a higher wattage and should charge even faster.

Possibly, but why are people always trying to decide what a fair margin/price is.

Everybody can vote with their wallet, as the people buying knock offs do.
Plus Apple doesn't offer certain things (Dual car charger etc.)

Because consumers are buyers and we determine market price.

If I sold an item at $10,000 because I felt this was a fair price as a businessman, and no one bought it, I have two options. Don't sell any or lower the price. Consumers drive the price of an item.

This was one of the difficulties of Starbucks. How were they able to charge so much more for a single cup of coffee than their competitors who were charging much less? Simple, you rename the coffees and the names of sizes. The consumer has nothing to compare to. If you have some time, read about it. I had to for my marketing class.

Just as a consumer knows that if a 4cyl engine costs 2,000 then a 6 cyl engine has to cost more. They aren't aware that the 6cyl engine could cost the company less money because its easier to design or so forth. But the company selling can charge more because that's how our minds work.

there is an update about the countries where the takeback program works :

USA (duh!), China (duh!) but also Canada, France (yes!!), Germany, Japan and UK.

the official statement can be found on the websites of those countries.

I went this morning to my local Apple Store.

One person had no idea what I was talking about. Another "heard about it" and had to ask someone else.

The person who knew had to get a Genius to do it as it is considered an Apple Hardware Support issue. That person struggled through the replacement procedure as I was the first one.

They didn't have the charger in stock. I have to go back, wasting more time and gas, when my order comes in.

Turns out, they cannot take retail ones off the shelf, as service replacements are different. Also, I was lead to believe that they will replace it with the EXACT ONE that is for the unit. So, I will be getting an iPad 2 adapter, not one of the newer ones that comes with the newer iPads.

When I find another adapter to bring in, I will do it again. Should be interesting what I get for my iPhone 3GS...

Just a heads up...

I had a similar experience. I just left apple and I was the first one they had dealt with today with the program. My local store was well stocked with service replacements, so I was able to get mine today. I did ask was I getting the 10w or 12w ipad adapter and the genius told me he wasn't sure, but in the end he gave me the 12w even though the ipad 3 would've been the 10w. Go ahead and schedule a iphone genius appointment if you're planning on swapping in your power adapter, might save a little bit of time.

Similar experience for me today in Louisville, KY. I got so frustrated I just walked out after they wasted 15 minutes of my time with not knowing what to do. I was told finally at the end that they didn't have any chargers in stock to replace it with. At one point, one of the so-called geniuses even said to me, "well that's not one of our chargers". duh.

I'll see if I have better luck when back home in Denver.

Ooops, forgot. I went when they first opened thinking I was going to do things quickly. The store was full, including a "how to use your iPhone" workshop.

I ended up waiting 15 minutes, then it took 20 minutes as they tried to figure out how to do things.

Definitely schedule an appointment as people with appointments were getting helped first.
