sadly, despite living in the capital of florida (with 3 universities), there is no apple store to take advantage of. I have a crappy ipad charger and a crappy iphone charger to swap.

fyi...

...users can bring any usb power adapter and an iphone, ipad or ipod to an apple retail store or participating apple authorized service provider.

Including Radioshack, AT&T, etc.

Really? That's screwed up. I forgot my charger while on a vacation and was utterly grateful that the hotel had one. I returned it when I checked out. You're the dude who would just steal it. That's cute. How cheap can you be?

Not cheap when I save $20/$30 jsut by stopping by when I pass. They have 5+ Apple adapters, and usually 5+ lightning cables and 10+ 30 pin.

That "green dot" means absolutely nothing when one (at least) of the companies manufacturing counterfeit chargers puts a green dot on its products.

This either shows that:
A-Apple is naive
B-Apple chargers cost them nearly nothing.

A - you don't become a multi billion dollar company that way.
B - they're probably cheap, but certainly not free.

Or C: there is a real tangible benefit to winning or retaining customer goodwill. Plus, chances are people will go into a store and while there check out the new shiny and maybe pick something up.

Given there are ways companies try to calculate C, I'll take C thanks.

----------

Maybe they will now that USB can everything their own connector can do...Oh wait....IT CAN'T!

That. Also, control over the connector on the remote end means they're free to extend as they see fit without breaking the USB standard, which people would be bitching about if they went "USB plug+apple extensions that don't work with anything else"

Apple is a capitalist company, therefore, no good will. Just profit. They will still profit monitarily from this as well as train you to always buy their $$$ chargers rather than anyone else.

I'm not saying capitalism is bad, I'd die before going away from it, I just think it silly to believe that a for profit company is doing this purely out of goodwill.

At $10.00 their still probably making an $8.00 profit :) If they didn't bone people on accessories this problem wouldn't exist in the first place!

so, you don't lose the cables? simply say you did get one from teh hotel and get a "new" one?

if so, that's lying, stealing and being cheap.

$20 isn't too much? lol.
You have any idea how much a charger costs apple to produce? probably a few cents...

I bought over the years at least 30 USB chargers. (for my family, my gf, for the cars, work, etc). They are so cheap i don't even care when i lose one. I paid 2-4 dollars for each. Original ones would have cost $600. Probably more (i think the ipad ones are more expensive).

Same with miniDP adapters/ iphone bumpers/ lightning cables/ 30-pin cables/ iphone docks/ ipad docks/ ipod docks/ HDMI cables, etc.

People ask me how i can afford all the L lenses (see my sig). Well, i don't throw away money on every overpriced official **** and i buy 3rd party.

Nope - you are completely missing the point. SOME adapters are fine. You wouldn't chop in a Belkin for example. And a lot of the cheap USB chargers are ok - But There is now a plethora of dangerous USB chargers out there with very dangerous components, non-existent shielding - no insulation or breakers. And most people have no way of telling. It's just ebay crappola.

Any of the other stuff you are comparing there won't kill you will it if it's poorly made ( perhaps the cables )

Also... L Lenses are sometime worse than the Sigma or Tamron and they are way cheaper ;)

The company is also offering official replacement chargers for $10

THIS!!!

Because Apple charges so much for its adapters, it makes counterfeit ones very profitable!

It will be cheap insurance to sell quality adapters for a small loss then try and make profit off of it.

$10 as is, and $7 with trade in seems much better path.

But +1 Apple!

Explain how what I said was wrong.

I have yet to hear of anyone else getting zapped.

All of those things are made overseas.

All are based off of a switching PSU

Edit: why do you bait when it's clearly against the rules here?

They do not "all come from the same place", unless that place is "overseas", as you stated.

All cars, televisions, computers, etc. are the same because they are built "overseas" and "are based on the same principle", right?

Again, you have no knowledge of what you are speaking about.

So I can buy an unofficial charger off eBay for $5, bring it in to Apple and get an official one for $10? That's $5 savings!

Yes but it's more useless plastic and electronics that needs to be recycled and thrown away. Don't you thing your world is cluttered enough as it is?

I know plenty...And I believe to have you pegged correctly too.

Apple will probably make millions in profit from this considering to costs next to nothing and a great ploy for people to buy their 'official' charger at a 'discount'.

Or that, you know, Apple's PR know how to turn negative coverage into positive one. It's a brilliant marketing move, and any marketing usually costs money anyway.

The 'negative' story only exists because of Apple's exorbitant pricing on items that cost them next to nothing to produce. Apple's prices on adapters and cables make Monster HDMI cables look like a good deal.

Always amazing to see posters claim that Apple adapters cost next to nothing, cents, pennies etc. without knowing what they actually cost!

I am sure, if you ran that business you'd charge next to nothing.

With such a discount, I expect people to bring brand new third-party adapters they got for a couple bucks just in order to get the discount. Not that it won't help to avoid people from being electrocuted, but it will create unnecessary waste. Still a good move overall, but I wonder how could this be avoided.

To be honest, Apple will probably recycle the old adapter you give them anyway. Strip them for parts and materials or what not.

That is why I only stick with official Apple chargers and cables

No worry and hassles

When they mess up, take them to your nearest Apple store and they will replace with a new one! wh00t

Samsung wants $35 for a 1A charger and $40 for a 2A

This is a great offer by Apple. Many brag about how their $2 knockoff chargers perform as well as an OEM, until of course something bad happens. If something were to happen (fried your phone, or worse) using a genuine Apple charger, you might have some recourse. If the same were to happened using a cheap knockoff, tough luck.

Think of the $20 Apple charges for a high quality original charger your insurance.

This either shows that:
A-Apple is naive

the answer is none of the above.
Apple is more clever than that.

The buyback sets the electrocution incident for wide dissemination - I never have heard of it if it until the buyback; Apple is leveraging on opportunity with the statement that buying counterfeit is a bad move and puts it in our face that Apple accessories are a good move at any cost considering the alternative could kill you- what better way or time to do that than now. $19 charger for $10; very inexpensive for Apple against the benefits.

Well in California you would pay 10% sales tax on the full $20 ($2) so it would really be like $3. Then you pay for gas and yeah....

Personally I would rather work 2 hours and make 100x that amount of money than look for a way to 'take advantage' of the program.
