I really wish apple would add a dedicated wireless CarPlay radio to the "Pro" or "Ultra" versions of the next iPhone now that it's becoming so prevalent in new vehicles OR add an option for wireless to wired CarPlay handoff when the phone is plugged into the car/head unit. It's super annoying that I can't connect to my vehicles access point that utilizes a roof mount LTE antenna for much better service in low signal areas while I'm using wireless CarPlay.

No surprise that they prefer an open source system. Concerning the BMW DEE demonstrator I would prefer something like a side stick instead of a steering wheel or yoke style controller.

I'm curious how stable it will be with multi display support and also latency when displaying speedometer. I lose connectivity all the time in my Honda Pilot. With that said, I love CarPlay. I won't get a car without it. I hate that Tesla does not support it.

I really hope CarPlay works in such a way that the phone's cellular connection is used to update the CarPlay software in each specific car and that it's not all fed from iOS. Else it will be crazy bloatware to have the interface for every car as part of iOS. Not only does it mean releasing an iOS update each time there's a bug fix for a specific car, or a new car is added, but it also means that we'll have a ridiculously large iOS to handle cars that we don't have. Or at least make an option not to install it on your phone for all cars. Does anyone know how it works?

At WWDC 2022 in June, Apple previewed the next generation of CarPlay, promising deeper integration with vehicle functions like A/C and FM radio, support for multiple displays across the dashboard, personalization options, and more.

Apple says the first vehicles with support for the next-generation CarPlay experience will be announced in late 2023, with committed automakers including Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, and others. Ahead of time, we have recapped five key features to expect from the new version of CarPlay.

Multi-Display Support

The new version of CarPlay will be able to appear across all of the displays in a vehicle, providing a consistent experience across the infotainment system, instrument cluster, and any additional screens on the dashboard. Apple says CarPlay will be tailored to each new vehicle model to accommodate unique screen shapes and layouts.

Instrument Cluster Integration

The new CarPlay experience will provide integration with a vehicle's instrument cluster, including the speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, and more. Apple says drivers will be able to choose from several gauge cluster designs and layouts, including brand‑specific options.

Climate Controls

CarPlay-Next-Generation-Screen.jpg

You'll be able to access your vehicle's climate controls directly within the new version of CarPlay, allowing you to adjust the temperature of the A/C or heat, fan speed, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and other options.

Widgets

CarPlay-Next-Generation-Widgets.jpg

Widgets will be a key part of the new CarPlay experience, offering at-a-glance information such as trip duration, fuel economy, distance traveled, calendar events, weather, phone calls, the status of a HomeKit-enabled garage door, and more. It will also be possible to view and scroll through the widgets within the instrument cluster.

FM Radio App

The new version of CarPlay will include an all-new Radio app that allows you to easily control the FM radio in your vehicle, such as to change the station.

So much wish they would bring this to iPad for DIY/ RV use. Most of us RV users don’t just trade in every few years and many of these things are not even available.

If available on iPad there are ways to integrate it with factory or DIY climate/ dash/ entertainment/ camera systems on our lower volume vehicles.

Most non-Apple systems are distracting and quite useless except for basic information while driving.

We have an AppleTV/ HomePod for entertainment system which works excellent with our mobile internet, CarPlay/ TruckPlay would make an excellent addition to our 66 former Greyhound machine!

i'm enjoying my apple carplay for first time ever in my 2022 car. Just a shame it isn't wireless to be fair but maybe next time I upgrade it will. Does make the experience so much better using carplay though.

I would imagine that it will just be a set of APIs and the iPhone transmitting video content.

I am fairly sure that the instrument cluster will not come through the iPhone - as that would require the iPhone software to be rated for automotive safety, which is a long onerous process.

I don't know. My 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid has a pretty fine built-in "infotainment" system (two 12.3 inch screens under one piece of glass) and certainly is visually better looking than today's CarPlay....and never freezes up, which I've experienced in other peoples' cars and in a Ford I rented. I also detest the large iPad as car interface BTW (e.g., Tesla, Ford). Will try Car Play soon, but I wanted to learn all that Kia offers natively first.

Sorry for the late reply, but Kenwood released this headunit recently for trucks & RVs. I guess Kenwood deisgned its built-in navigation (not CarPlay) specifically for RVs and trucks to find proper routes. Gonna be expensive as hell probably, but worth a look.
