Make cheap phone with a huge display, to appeal to lower class people. Sounds like Android in USA!

I probably pay more in taxes per year than your entire family makes. And i have a android. I guess your theory that a cheap 200 dollar cellphone makes you rich doesnt hol water, huh?

So what do you do when you make something as small as possible. Start making something else that is bigger. If Apple does make a bigger iPhone, please do not go cheap on the battery, this is a opportunity to make a smart phone with really good battery life.

Can definitely see Apple caving to a 5" iPhone to utilize those 1080p screens from Sharp and co. While also maintaining a lower cost unit w/ retina display. Unless of course they have some secret agreement or screen technology that everyone is quiet about!

As far as plastic, I'd welcome it as the next iPhone material if it is less fragile than the anodized aluminum. Don't have a problem w/ phones made out of plastic, they just have to find a way to make it feel more dense. The 3GS felt plenty premium.

I see a few rich types in very expensive cars drive up to shop in the lower class discount stores. Doesn't make the clunky plastic stuff in those stores high class. Just means that some high net worth people are thrifty (I know a few who are multi-millionaires and scary cheap).

And most (not all) android devices sold are on the cheap side. But except for samsung they mostly lose (or don't make) money, so I don't see the attraction for Apple... unless they just want to attack some of samsung's shelf space.

No way, the iPhone is for spoiled, rich, whiner kids/adults that need to fulfill a need for self satisfaction. That's kind of a joke . . . but not really.

Seriously though, this news doesn't make any sense. The iPhone is one of the cheapest handsets you could buy on or off contract. My Note 2 costs more, and the GSIII is the same price.

Although, a larger iPhone would actually be kind of useful.

Then again, the phone would still be subpar with an OS that's circa 2007.

The iPhone 5 is probably lower cost to make than the iPhone 4s.
It has chip consolidation for the cellular and wireless modems and has a unibody design as opposed to the glass front and back on the iphone 4s.

It probably cost about $150 to make a 64 Gb model.

So there is room for Apple to make a lower cost version and sell it only in China to corner more of that market.

I wouldn't diminish my brand in other parts of the world but India and China are large enough markets to warrant this consideration for a specialty product. That being said, it feels like a compromise. I dont' think Steve Jobs would ever have done it.

Not according to last Q management earning conference call discussion. The low yield in touch LCD panel is the big ticket item that cost a lot of money. And the build cost of the phone is only a part of the overall cost of shipping a product. You need to figure out distribution cost, inventory cost, warranty cost etc. etc. which can easily double the build cost of any electronic device.

This is bizarre assertion about Steve Job approval. None of us know Steve Job, so how do you know if he would approve or not? The truth is that Iphone sales is not keeping up with the the growth of the overall market. A low end phone make a lot of sense to expand their market share. If Apple can figure out how to make one with 35-30% gross margin (vs 50-60% gross margin on Iphone 5 and 23-32% margin on Ipad 3/4), they will make a lot more money than now even if you account for less Iphone 5/6 sales.

Ummmm, not gonna happen in this format. Never, no never!

That's what they said about the iPod video, iPad, iPad mini, Mac Mini, larger screen iPhone 5 . . . you know . . . . everything Apple has come out with.

Read this with an uplifting tone, not a smart @$$ tone, I am saying this in jest.

When Apple makes a big screen iPhone, fanboys will praise for Apple :apple:

It will be the first of its kind, revolutionary, and just the right size.

A cheaper phone to target the high end market? Even the report as written makes no logical sense.

It's complete nonsense.

Cheaper phone to target the "big chunk of phone" market. Make it 5.5", same number of pixels as the iPhone 5, take the processor etc. from the 4S, add a _huge_ battery, sell it cheap, and you make everyone happy who wants (a) a cheap iPhone (b) a huge phone (c) long battery life. And senior citizens will love it too.

Did you type that on an Android device? In that case, the spelling checker isn't working.

So the low-end market segment is growing faster than the boutique luxury end of the smart device market? If they make their lower-end product 5" big and plasticky (but run the same apps as the iP4), then it won't cannibalise any of their high-end (high margin iP5) sales. And thus any positive margin sales will be all gravy.

All they have to do is make the display larger and lose the "retina" PPI and all the apps would run with no problem. (That's what they did with the iPad Mini, just took an okay size and shrunk it so it'd work).

Yes some phones would say they have more pixels/higher resolution, but you know what? They're pointing out some of these minor things because they know they aren't iPhones...

It will be a pain in the butt for developers.

It's sad to now see Apple following trends. A few years ago, Apple was creating them.

i think its possible apple will build a larger size iphone, but not a low cost one, that would break the apple-DNA. the only reason apple should build a phone thats cheaper, is because the product has a different integrity to a specific market. i.e. the iPod shuffle and the iPod touch to the iPod 'Classic'.

but what types of markets are there for Phone users? apple would need to see a market or even invent one.

people wanted MacBook Airs because people wanted ultra portable light but powerful laptops. MacBook Air is not a cheap laptop, its still an expensive ultra portable. its just Cheaper than the MacBook Pro.

iPad Mini, is not a cheap tablet, its just a different tablet that has an integrity that costs less.

if apple can make an iPad Mini, for prices similar to the iPhone, then yes, im sure an iPhone with retina display, at a larger size (5 or 6 inches) can be done.

now, heres my thought: what kind of market could be 'invented' for this product to have an actual integrity of being bigger?

well now that iPad mini has filled that itch people had for a tablet computer to be even more portable, im think its possible that there could be an itch at some point that develops between Phone users, and iPad mini users, who want something in-between the iPad mini, and iPhone. something that makes calls, but provides that comfortable, desirable experience of browsing the web on a spacious larger screen, in general making content larger (photos/video).

who knows

It's happened three times already. Once for the Retina, again for the iPad, then again for the iPhone 5.

I think devs will adapt.

Besides, the market trend on the other end of the spectrum is to have a bevy of resolutions. Apple still only has 4.

I can see the benefit of a cheaper iPhone to further take over those markets which Android phones sit quite nicely into, but for a lower price, what sort of consequence could you expect? Non-Retina? iPhone 4 processor?
