Apple leather case is a good case
Scratches happen main thing is that your iPhone didn’t get scratched

If it was a $15 case, I would say yes. At $49, it's a ripoff. If you think a 2 cent piece of plastic, wrapped in 10 cents worth of leather being sold for $49 is a good deal, then enjoy.

Maybe it’s not even plastic but cardboard. It feels low-quality compared to other leather goods I’ve had.
Here’s the scratch after I rubbed it off gently with a bit of water (it also has a sort of dent possibly due to the fingernail hitting it):

There’s no way I can consider this a premium leather good. And definitely not worth €55 (~US$60)!

Material costs mean nothing in this situation. The case looks great, fits great, can take a pretty good knock, heals and looks better with age. It's a nice case and I couldn't care less what it cost to make. It's easily worth $50 to me. If you're not comfortable spending that much on a case then stick with the cheaper stuff from Amazon.

Definitely return that case because you are not going to be happy with how it ages. That doesn't even look like a scratch. Looks like something rubbed off on it.

I don't mind if my leather accessories scratch, especially phone cases. The only time a scratch would drive me insane is if my leather steering wheel had a scratch.

I own other leather goods and I absolutely think it's worth the premium price IMHO. I've tried other leather cases before and IMHO; none of them come even close to the fit and finish of the Apple leather case. Some leather goods have certain coatings on them--the iPhone leather case has a light wax coating so it gets better with age as the wax breaks down and it begins to patina and absorb oils. Plus, it tends to heal a lot better as it ages later on since we use our phones everyday--so that scratch will vanish.

I have always thought apple leather is cheap when compared to nomad/mujjo/vaja/piel frama etc. But they are a good fit and feel nice, no way worth $79AUD here, mine i got free as it came with streaks across the back and they refunded and let me keep it, have had a few like it.
And this patina that everyone goes on about i call it grime, especially with apples leather, why i only buy black.

On the past I've had some generic leather cases for my old iPhones, and early this year I bought Apple's Saddle brown leather for the XS Max and I was very dissapointed too, the good thing that these cases were on sale on Bestbuy, I paid like $25...

I knew about patina and expect a dark color over time (because my wallets and old leather cases I had before) but the case after just a month, looked terrible, the edges on the case were so black, and overall look dirty, and I was very cautious and treat the case like royal jewels 😅

Very different experience from the silicone cases from Apple (even the watchbands), had a few before and the color never fades and no stains...
