Agreed, but there are many grades of leather, some with distinct properties for specific uses. Apple's choice of leather is furnished exceptionally thin to suit a visual property at the expense of durability. That leads to a costly case that can become ghastly looking in short time under conditions that other cheaper cases can shrug off.

Also, Apple uses aniline leather which is very susceptible to scratching and marring with no real way to fix them so the product can develop a patina very quickly. If you don't mind the patina then it's the right material for you. The top grain leather that is usually on shoes and purses can be polished if you gat a scratch or scuff and made to look almost like new. Not so with aniline leather. As for the issue with water damage - that's an easy fix - spray with a stain/water repellent/protector when you first get the leather case and you'll be all set.
