Apple Legal vs x86 Mac OS X

The email MacBidouille received told them to remove the video; I assume it also threatened legal action if they did not, hence the "amazingly aggressive" description.

That's pretty gutsy of them, insisting that they will not change their mind and start supporting illegal actions. 🙄 Perhaps it lost something in the translation.
 
I wonder if there is something in the video that no one has picked up on. Some detail in the background or something that apple doesn't want anyone to see. It could be the reason for the overly aggressive behavior.

But it is a video of you running a pirated copy of a non-public Apple product.

It's proof that you are running it, and under some of the software piracy laws -- you can be nailed with a hefty civil/criminal lawsuit as an end user, and you have just provided Apple with all the evidence they need to go after your ass.

Edit: don't know the basis for asking a 3rd party to take the video down showing somebody else's criminal behavior though (probably just a NDA violation.) The instuctions are a little more clearcut, and no big move from Apple on those yet.

I on't think there's anything illegal about that particular system, it doesn't seem that it comes with a copy of the operating system, just that its capable of running it, just like a lot of PCs are capable or running pirated copies of Windows.

Maybe they mean "we say we've never supported illegal action, and that's the story we're sticking too"
 
I fully support Apple and their requesting that the information be removed. Heck, they do the same thing with other rumors sites (Think Secret, anyone.) I'd be willing to bet that the guys over at think secret probably have done this too, but they're still in Apple Legal hot water over the inside info.

Anyway, this is almost definitely a violation of the NDA, and I think Apple has every right to request that it be taken off the site.

I too hope that Apple has come up with a much better way of preventing the beloved OS X from being run on non-Mac hardware. I think that they are more committed to providing a good computing platform that enormous growth. As far as thier stockholders are concerned, as long as Apple remains debt-free (this is huge) and continues to make money, the shareholders will be happy.

It isn't giving away trade secrets. It is only a video of the result of someone else breaking the law. Apple has nothing on this. Apple just wants to sue and tie up the funds of the internet site showing the video. It is no different then if your local news showed a story of people illegally shooting up heroin on the street corner. They aren't telling you how to do it, just reporting and showing proof that it does happen. The news, and the site with the video could protect their sources.

What a waste of time, Steve. Don't be a baby and go after the web site showing the video, fix the freakin problem! You got free info that people are stealing your osx and you get pissed at the informant. What a moron.

This is the part I'm curious about as well, the restriction on the dev kit was relatively lax, just look on how long it took to crack it successfully, the range of hardware it can run on is growing rapidly. This is the heaviest legal action they've taken so far but there's no telling what's to come in the future. I wonder if this is going to be a situation like MS, where they publicly condone piracy but don't exactly take a lot of measures to prevent it from happening, every time MS tries to prevent pirated copies of Windows from getting updates or anything, its cracked within days.
I know that Apple has been keeping a close watch on it, the people at the OSx86project have been seeing Apple IPs in their IRC channel but I think that something bigger is going on here than what we're first seeing.

Exactly (except for the moron part). Either Apple Legal is just being weird in going after the videos or they're saying that we'll go after who did this but its not the highest priority.
 
More money developin... less on lawyers.

Yeah... don't let people say Mac's Suck... in fact can we prevent people form voicing any kind of opinion. Or better yet perhaps we could put all people with an opinion that is not authorized by apple in jail..... no camps. 🙄

I love apple products, but sometimes that are a strange company.

I asked the guy if OS X was included with the computer. I wonder what his answer will be.

Edit: hum, just saw his auction lists OS X 10.4 with iLife '05...

The "security feedback" page of eBay doesn't work with Safari (I get blank areas instead of selection menus). Has anyone reported this guy yet? (to both Apple and eBay)
 
After looking at that eBay listing, I'll be interested to see if that will be the first of many listings like that going up to run OS X on "illegal" hardware.

Geez, didn't notice that, I'll have to take another look. I started a thread about the auction here, as I couldn't find any other reference to it, but if it's indeed been up for 5 days, I'm surprised no one else here at MR picked up on it and started a thread on it...
