In its announcement video for the new Mac mini last month, Apple teased an "upcoming" version of Final Cut Pro for the Mac. Apple will likely announce the update during the annual Final Cut Pro Creative Summit, which begins this Wednesday. The conference is held in association with Apple, and attendees will be visiting Apple Park on the first day.

Apple already teased four new features coming to Final Cut Pro for the Mac later this year:

  • In its visionOS 2 press release in June, Apple said an update to Final Cut Pro for the Mac will add the ability to edit spatial videos recorded with devices like iPhone 15 Pro models, any iPhone 16 model, or the Canon EOS R7 mirrorless camera with a spatial video lens that recently became available for pre-order. Spatial videos have 3D depth and can be viewed on Apple's Vision Pro headset.
  • In the Mac mini announcement video, Apple said the Final Cut Pro update will enable users to instantly apply AI-generated effects to videos. In the visionOS 2 press release from June, Apple similarly mentioned the upcoming ability to add "immersive titles and effects" to videos. It seems plausible that the new AI features in Final Cut Pro could have Apple Intelligence branding, but this is not certain.
  • In the Mac mini video, Apple also previewed automatic AI-generated captions for videos in Final Cut Pro, eliminating the need to use caption plugins or other software. This feature has been long awaited amid the rise of short-form videos with captions across TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels.
  • An image of Final Cut Pro in the Mac mini video showed an unreleased "Magnetic Mask" feature. While no details are known about this feature, it will likely allow users to isolate moving objects in the foreground to remove them, add text behind them, apply color grading, or so on. This feature will likely be similar to MotionVFX's mRotoAI plugin for Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve's Magic Mask feature.
At least some of these features will likely extend to an updated version of the Final Cut Pro app for iPad. There could also be updates to the Final Cut Pro companion apps Compressor and Motion for the Mac, and to the Final Cut Camera app for the iPhone.

Final Cut Pro's upcoming auto-caption feature

Final Cut Pro received its most recent feature update to version 10.8 in June. New features included an Enhance Light and Color effect, a Smooth Slo-Mo option for slow-motion visuals, advanced search and filtering in the timeline index, and more. It is unclear if the next update to Final Cut Pro will be considered version 10.9, or if Apple will finally introduce Final Cut Pro 11, which would likely be a major new version with several additional features. In addition to auto-generated captions, many Final Cut Pro users have hoped for features such as text-based editing and the ability to open video libraries stored in iCloud.

In the U.S., Final Cut Pro costs $299.99 on the Mac, while the iPad version is a subscription-based app priced at $4.99 per month or $49 per year.

I'd love for FCP11 to be able to create AI highlight reels from selected footage, recognizing action, smiling, and stabilized clips, similar to what DJI's software and Lightcut currently does on the iPhone. As far as I'm aware, there is no desktop based AI video editing software available, where you can plug in hours worth of footage and it magically creates a 1-2 minute highlight video with all the best 2-3 second clips tied to a cinematic music soundtrack.

I would love for them to release an update that makes it competitive again. I loved FCP 7 and hate all things Adobe and I can't afford Avid. DaVinci is getting better though but so is iMovie.

Apple is not solving problems that professional editors blamed in 2022 with an open letter due to lack of features, constant updates, educations, and more. Currently, FCPX is for a single editor or creator and not really meant for professional and large scale works.

I really think FCPX and other software should have a subscription system in order to keep updating software more frequently, add more features, and satisfy professional editors if they cant do that. Compared to Adobe and DaVinci Resolve, FCPX and even Motion really needs more content updates, features, and tutorials to attract more people.

Did they really solve problems from the open letter a few years ago? Nope. They never did. It's just a matter of time before they start losing more users to Adobe and DaVinci Resolve. Personally, Apple should've focus and update more frequently with Motion to compete with After Effect.

Text-based editing will be a great improvement for Final Cut. It will bring it on par with competitors. Will it be version 10.9 or version 11? At this point who cares about version numbers. Just bring us the update!!
Are there any sources that this is more than a distant rumor? Seems natural with captions coming... I've pretty much switched to Resolve full time because of the native text based editing features. It saves a ton of time but I miss Motion integration so much and just have not had time to learn Fusion.

Even if all it did was 'suggest' ranges in clips and/or auto apply keywords, I'd be very happy.

As long as I can completely avoid all the AI "features" after it updates.
A lot of these features people are anxious for have been making their way into software long before anyone decided to bundle any and all things vaguely fitting the profile under the 'AI' venture capitalist hype umbrella. It's all still the same Neural/Computational Engine features that have been trickling in for 6 years or more. And while there's a lot of junk, there is a tone of good, time saving features.

'AI' is just like 'blockchain' and 'metaverse.' Over hyped phrases based on tech that had already existed and had people working on interesting useful things for years prior. The over-hyped stupid stuff inflates, pops and ultimately what is left are the interesting useful things people had already been working on before there was a hype.

I agree with you except for this. Motion is amazing specifically because it is not After Effects. It's a guided missile cruiser to After Effect's aircraft carrier. Both can be powerful, but one is much more complex and needs a lot more resources to be effective.

I think 80% of what people think they need AE for, you can do in Motion in half the time. The other 20% that's too complex or beyond Motion's feature set is fine for AE to own, because I'd rather Motion stay streamlined and quick for the other 80%.

November 13th. Whichever day the Apple visit is for the Final Cut conference, is the day the press release comes out. If you’re attending the conference, it’s kind of cool to go into the mini theatre for the smaller keynote (I call it keynote junior) they put on for FCPX.

I'll be at the FCP Creative Summit next week — if anyone reading this is going, say hello! :)
I went last year - great times! Unfortunately I can’t attend this year as much as I would have liked to, it wasn’t in the cards. Maybe next year! Enjoy yourself! (If you’ve never been before, it’s great)
There's evidence on YouTube that FCP under-performs on M4. I'd expect that to change with an update.
Historically with new chip releases, the optimizations for those chips in FCPX come out after. (Last year, after the Scary Fast event, the optimizations for M3 and above weren’t released until Nov 6, the day of the FCPX keynote. Completely expected behaviour.

The most important change for Final Cut would be that Apple finally unifies its licensing model and lets subscribers of the iPad version also use the Mac version.
I’d be happy with just the option to pay $5/month for FCP on the Mac instead of the full price (keep the non-subscription option though too).

$300 is not a crazy amount, but I’d only use it occasionally. It’d take me many many years (twenty years?) to hit $300, if I were paying monthly.

If it’s version 10.9 that means that version 11 is going the be even more massive.

😂 you think they would charge $5 when Adobe wants $20…
