Given the specs only say USB C and not Thunderbolt, is it fair to assume that if I want to use an MBA2 with an external monitor that also acts as a USB C hub, I will need to have a separate cable from the MBA2's USB C port to the monitor (in addition to the MagSafe to power outlet)?

Yep, I'm going to RMA it.

Rep: Why?
Me: Wrong MagSafe cable colour... defective!
Lol.

This reminds me of the Apple Watch S7 bands. They didn't allow me to select the one I wanted with the watch I wanted, at time of initial order. So I went into the Apple Store with the unwanted band, and manually swapped them on a manual return then re-buy correct one.
No flipping way I'm spending £50 on a band I don't want, just to get a Watch without waiting months!

Another needless Apple ordering limitation we could do without.

...a week later Apple simply completely removed the Charcoal (plain black) braided bands from sale.

This is all fine and good. But the happy truth for me about these M1 Macs is that I'm charging MUCH less frequently now. In fact unless I'm anticipating some kind of marathon remote session, I no longer really worry much about battery until it gets down to 30% or so.

Just wait until the EU makes Apple get rid of MagSafe.
sorry, are new apple design team on crack or sth? colored cable with white connector?
To be fair, they matched the white connector to the white power brick, since that’s the only color those come in. It probably looks completely fine.

That white usb-c connector on the end of black cable.. just wow.
It will look fine when plugged in, blends in with the white plastic Charger. Believe me, better than having a little chunk of space grey metal sticking out of the white plastic charger... The cable alone looks weird but when plugged in it will be fine.

As Apple users know, there’s nothing worse than a dull, dingy MagSafe cable. Well thanks to the design team in Apple’s Polishing Cloth Division, you can now keep that cable clean with a polishing cloth color-matched to your charging cable, starting this September for only $39.99. Exclusive Pride Cloth $49.99.

Combo Magsafe cable / Polishing cloth Carrying Case available in Rose Gold or Space Gray for $54.99.

Only in Apple Stores.
Because we know you’ll pay.

The charger is behind my couch. 2 meters doesn't cut it. I will continue to use a 3 meter USB-C cable until Apple sells 3 meter long MagSafe cables.

You can add an extension to the brick which brings the MagSafe cable closer to you.

I don't like the charger extension cable. It will mean that my charger brick is lying on my couch while charging. The 3 meter USB-C cable is not a bad solution. Another benefit is that I can connect also on the right-hand side of the MacBook Pro, whereas the MagSafe connector is only on the left-hand side of the MacBook Pro. In the layout of my room, a 2 meter MagSafe cable would actually (just) make it on the right-hand side. First world problems :).

I hope not. If a monitor can charge through USB-C, can the Air be charged with that USB-C alone?

Now can you give me one that is longer? I know that "most people" camp near a plug but come on only available in a 2 meter? What is everyone using to extend? Don't really want the bulky power adaptor.

AFAIK the only two options you have to get a longer cable is buying the Apple extension cord to connect to the power brick (as suggested in post #42), or to buy a longer third party USB-C cable (but you'll charge your MacBook via USB-C port, not MagSafe)

Actually it was post #31. 😉
