So 99% of people have nothing to worry about as all these apps look like junk apps to me.

I agree - except for WeChat ... It is huge outside of the US, especially in China. Every Chinese person I know in the US has it installed, everyone who knows people in China has it installed (My wife has it because two of her coworkers moved back to China a few years ago).

So yes, the average american probably does not have to worry - but otherwise, WeChat is big.

We learned 2 lessons today.
1. Everybody likes top lists.
2. In the Chinese Appstore it's allowed to have blatant knock-off apps like 'Angry Bird' and 'Gaode Maps' (*). Got to give credit to the developer, not even trying to disguise the icons!

For many Chinese natives, "Google" and "Gaode" look practically the same words.

Didi = China's Uber. It's a pretty important app if you live in a city with 21 million people, like Shanghai.

And yes, it's about time Apple improves its hosting power in China. Downloading software like OS X or XCode should be considered a form of Chinese torture here in China. Get a cue from Microsoft - downloading Win 10 beta was done in a few minutes, vs. hours for Xcode and dealing with the stupid "oh, you have to start over, some random error occurred!" App Store.

It's not really a surprise that some people try do download XCode from somewhere else. I myself too tried (only from Apple directly though), but Apple doesn't host directly on the Apple Developer website any more and redirects you to the slow App Store - downloading from a regular website with a good download accelerator is way faster and more reliable than going via the App Store here in China.

This was what my cynical mind thought.

Even Angry Birds.... So, not only are they Chinese and angry but also affecting your whole iOS. I hope Apple will deal with these birds. God thanks most of the programs, if not all of them, affect mostly Chinese customers if I understand this correctly?

Apps I'll never install, noted. Figured the bigger, well known app dev's weren't dumb enough to use Xcode from a random source.

Whilst I do agree with this on the whole. People with a lot to lose do still do silly things. Look at Clinton.

Some articles mentioned about chinese appstore only. But not in this article, are they trying to make people panic? Or the problem does exist in other region as well?

While a full list would be nice for us, that would only are the competition like Android lovers with full to through flames at the platform. I think what they are showing is that the top 25 downloaded where all very obscure apps that the average user never downloaded, and if we didn't download these then past the top 25 would be even more obscure and less likely that the average user (at least average non china based user) downloaded an affected app.

Your logic is only showing the top 25 to avoid getting "flamed" by Android lovers? I think this problem goes well above and beyond any potential negative blog comments that may occur as a result.

Apple has been working to remove all apps compromised by XcodeGhost from the App Store,

Which App Store? The U.S. App Store? The European App Store? Why is no one specifying this is happening on the Chinese App Store? I don’t use the Chinese App Store. Can one of the majority of trolls on this site supply links or documentation that I can download an infected app on the U.S. App Store?

Unless you happen to have one of those other apps...

Gary

And how would you get that app from the Chinese App Store?

you can compile the app with a fake XCode and then release it to any App store you like. For example, the English WeChat is the same as the Chinese one. It just loads Chinese localization when you use it on iOS set to Chinese, that's all. Otherwise it's the same app, which is offered in various App stores.
