I don't see it really being an issue.

A smooth fade down means more time the screen is on AKA more battery used.

I'd rather an abrupt cut-off.

Exactly how much more battery would be used? As in, how many minutes of runtime would you be likely to lose?
 
I know there is always someone who's even more OCD than me... wow...
And maybe I'm a little blind but I hardly see a difference in the gifs above.
