Can Apple's focus on Mac and pro market be any less than this?

Where is the updated 30-inch display? It's not even HDCP compliant... talk about entering the TV market.

Apple will really need to bring some value to get their usual margins on these. TV's are normally sold on low margins and made up in the warranty and accessories.

i have some family that just bought a $1300 47" LCD LED TV that has an IPS panel. Yahoo, Vudu, Netflix, youtube and picasa built in. who needs itunes?

if apple is going to sell the same TV for $2000 it will need to have some killer feature. and syncing with the iphone or computer is not it

Apple has a bleak future if they keep branching out. Stick with your core purpose, or die.

The reason the iPhone is successful is the same reason why people love Macs. The same quality and attention to consumer needs was carried over.

I highly doubt that Apple can continue to carry this user experience to things that are so far outside of their core abilities. Acquisitions or not.

My prediction...

OK I'm going to go way out on a limb here and make a crazy prediction. I was thinking of what Steve Jobs said about having so many problems with TV distribution because of cable companies etc.

I think if Apple goes into TV, they are going to buy Dish network or DirectTV

He also had similar things to say about tablet computers before the iPad was released.

Yes, and he also famously said that ereaders weren't going anywhere, because nobody reads anymore. Of course that was before the release of iBooks.

TV's are now where smart phones were a few years ago. all the new TV's with internet capability run Linux and have a long list of open source software in them.

only problem for apple is that TV's are low margin and they will need to think up of something if they want to sell them at the margins they are used to

This is 100% correct. Apple is *very* good at some things...but no one is good at everything.

Happily, I think Apple knows this and I don't think that they will be investing in anything that doesn't complement their core competencies.

Does it mean that Steve Jobs soon will have his own reality show where he would be responding with rude one-liners?...

Ok, as much as I love Apple, I don't think I want every electronic device in my house to be made by Apple. I mean, talk about monopoly.

(Did you get my little humor about Monopoly and the other guy mentioning Risk?) Oh, my stupid humor. :D

1000 points to the first person that photoshops a satellite dish in the shape of Apple's logo! I would do it myself, but don't have the ability to.

I wished they would look at TiVo. Their products and software have always seemed very Apple like to me...
Their sales also happen to be very similar to the Apple TV. Steve Jobs pointed them out at the D8 conference as an example of a company not doing well.

He also said no one would want to watch movies on small screens. Anything he says people don't want....expect a new gadget for that purpose released within 2-3 years.

Correct. Apple would not sell low-margin televisions.

They would more likely be interested in selling a higher-margin set-top box that people would replace every 2-3 years. People don't replace TV sets that often.

My guess is that they will respin Apple TV as an ARM-based iDevice running iOS. The key is to negotiate content deals that would entice people into using the device (Apple uses software/services to drive sales of its high-margin hardware).

To be honest, I do not want Apple to create a TV station. That would mean limitations in a lot of ways (In content). I do not want their moral values forced upon me, if they did it like they do with the App Store. I would like them to build TVs though =)

This is good news. Any signs if a new Apple TV is great for me. It's been almost four years since it was introduced, and it is in dire need if an update.

I still want to see what they're gonna do with Siri.

yeah me too. they need to do something about the speech recognition, neuance does it at the moment but only works for the US accent, useless for UK and seeing as they will have to release it worldwide i wondering on their strategy. You have to give google credit , their voice control is excellent. iphone voice control sucks. (for uk accents anyway)

Apple supports 2 development platforms

1. Completely open HTML5 platform (p0rn companies are already adopting)
2. Curated App Store
