Apparently disabling spotlight search helps

Anyone want to try and report back?

I have a 3G with 4.0 and SMS, Phone and Safari were all taking up to 10 seconds to load. I have turned off ALL sportlight searches as i never use them anyway and can confirm that those above apps are now opening almost instantly. The delay in being able to answer calls has also gone.

Awesome.

weird that this just made front page literally minutes after i got off the phone with fido (service provider in canada) and they were telling me the same thing.

the lagginess and crashing is frustrating for me, but what has been totally unacceptable is that data on the phone stops working for me on a daily basis. i have literally tried everything:

i downgraded to os 3, but the problem persisted and was told i need to upgrade to the latest os to get the latest carrier updates.

i re-updated to ios4, set up as a new phone, and ran all the carrier updates. the problem persisted.

fido tech support did some sort of a reset on their end to no avail.

at least 3 other people i know started experiencing the exact same problems on their 3g or 3gs phones running either iphone os3 or ios4, so i'm pretty sure its not an isolated hardware issue.

so i have no idea what to do. i can't software downgrade, and canada's obscene 3 year contracts make hardware upgrades impossible on the yearly basis that the iphone seems to demand.

i'm definitely disappointed.

ios4 on the 3g was just terrible experience! It was beyond slow and the lag when doing anything was bad as well.

I just reverted back to 3.1.3 and damn what a difference. I can actually text, and type without it being 8 letters behind.

OK, I just read the WSJ article. Looks like this topic only refers to the 3G, not the 3GS. In my case, my 3GS has been suffering from substantial slowdowns since I upgraded to iOS 4. Can anyone else corroborate this behavior with the 3GS?

Thanks.

Same here, very sad, hope 4.1 helps with this.

I can't believe all of the whining going on in this thread. iOS 4.0 is a major OS release and as such there were bound to be problems with it. Especially on a piece of hardware that's two generations behind the hardware that it was really designed to run on.

Let's cut them a break and give them a chance to fix these issues. The iPhone 4 and iOS 4.0 roll outs haven't exactly gone as smoothly as I'm sure Apple would have liked them to, which certainly means they haven't had as much time to focus on the issues experienced by existing 3G and 3GS customers trying to run iOS 4.0 as they otherwise would have.

They could have just left 3G users in dust on this OS release instead of trying to support a piece of hardware that is clearly over matched in some regards as it relates to running this version of the operating system. I can't believe the amount of people who rush to install a major OS upgrade on a phone that's two hardware generations behind and then whine when there are some issues with it.

Early reports are that iOS 4.1 which is already in beta will address these issues. If not then by all means complain and rightfully so but until then accept the fact that stuff happens to early adopters and either downgrade to 3.0 or deal with the slowness until 4.1 is released.

Sort of like some other heavily criticized OS that ran like crap on older systems.

:D :D :D

I'm a realist; I don't expect a 2-year old piece of hardware to run the latest and greatest OS with the finesse of a new product -- but I should at least be able to answer the damn phone! (And yes -- I too have missed some calls when the UI was completely unresponsive or stuck doing something else!)

Performing a DFU restore improves things significantly

We were having this problem. Then we tried a DFU restore and things are MUCH better now.

From:http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/How_To:_Enter_DFU_Restore_Mode

How To: Enter DFU Restore Mode
DFU MODE

This method is best for restoring, upgrading, downgrading and such. This is not the same as regular restore (with the "Connect to iTunes" logo)

Step-by-Step:

1. Turn the iPhone ON
2. CONNECT it to the dock
3. Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode
4. HOLD the Power/Sleep-Wake button AND the Home button for 10 seconds
5. RELEASE only the Power/Sleep-Wake button and continue to hold the Home button
6. WAIT until iTunes recognizes the phone in DFU Restore mode (in Windows a bubble pops up saying it recognized new hardware "DFU Mode" or something to that effect)
The last step may take SOME TIME, like, say, even 60 seconds or so. The screen should be OFF (black), if you see the "Connect to iTunes" logo, START OVER. It may take a few tries to do the steps just right, just reboot (hold both Power/Sleep-Wake AND Home until the Apple logo appears and the phone turns back on) then try again.

Another Way is to hear to the sound of the hardware Disconnect and Reconnect. When you hold power and home to reset, once you hear the USB disconnect sound leave the power button but keep holding the home until you hear another USB plugin sound. This is the easiest way to know that your phone is in DFU mode.

Lets face it; all of us that upgraded our 3G iPhone OS were sacked! With exception of a few features, they said it would work, but they didn’t say how well it would work. As I stated before, I’ve been with Apple products since the very beginning but I can’t recall being suckered like this in the past. Since downgrading is a true PITA, I will likely have to upgrade to the new phone a few months before I planned. In my view, Apple has decided to do whatever it takes to make a sale. If were not for the excellent integration with the Mac ecosystem, I would be buying a Samsung or other Droid device as fast as possible.

The answer is simple: downgrade

I have been using iOS4 since Beta1. believe me, downgrade, this is not a good thing for a 3G/iPod Touch.

You need 256Mo RAM for iOS 4.:mad:

should have not upgraded to iOS4.0

I think Israel and Palestine get along better than my iPhone 3G with iOS4.0 installed. What a joke.

Same could be said for the time it took to write this response.

The video is literally the truth, iOS4 is horrible on a 3G. But I am glad Apple is looking to fix the issues, as they should. Multitasking we might not get, but the update shouldn't be any slower for it, otherwise they shouldn't have released it for 3G's in the first place.

Dude, I'm cashing in on these responses. I'll tell you how when we meet in person.

Releasing latest generation software on hardware that is a generation behind is an old marketing trick going back to the first Mac and PCs. Some customers cannot see an advantage of the latest hardware / software combo 'til their own day-to-day devices are compromised. This is why iOS 4 was released for the 3GS in my opinion.

I bet over half of those savvy enough to upgrade their 3GS to iOS 4 bought an iPhone 4 that week if not that day. Cha-ching!

I got an iphone4 because my 3G became so unusable. My wifes is the same way
I had so much trouble downgrading I just got a new phone. I hope the update fixes it cause it looks like my wife won't get a new phone till the white one sells

Not going to read the other 242 comments to see if someone else has mentioned this, but...

It's not just the 3G. My iPod Touch 2G has been experiencing the same problems, though not quite as badly as the 3G. This is probably because the iPT has a faster processor than the 3G, but it's still not good. I've noticed more lag, a much greater decrease in battery life (I used to have to charge about twice a week, now I have to charge once a day), and the wifi signal has decreased (where I used to get three bars, I get one or it drops entirely).

I was quite pissed about having to get the upcoming 4th gen iPT to fix these problems that Apple has caused, but if 4.1 seems to fix it, I'll hold out to then and see how it goes. If it doesn't, I may get another iPod, but I'm not sure I should be rewarding Apple with my business. I may get an Archos. I had one before the iPT, and I really quite liked it. Only thing stopping me is the money I have invested in apps

Oh? You mean holding Apple accountable to actually putting out products that works is trolling? Don't make me laugh. Please, you're wasting my time here, skippy.

"How dare you insult my fanboy company. Stomps foot and walks out."

My phone works wonderfully. Damn you Apple!

Shakes fist at ceiling in best James T Kirk imitation, "Jooooooobs!"

It definitely slows down the user interface on the 3G of my wifes phone...glad I changed to a 3GS a while back. The performance difference is much more significant vs the 3GS-iphone4 difference.

Yeah, in a nutshell it's all the apps now being "iOS 4" aware and not shutting down when you exit them (aka starving your phone for memory). Under "iOS 3" or whatever you want to call it, when you hit the home button, the app shut down, thus freeing up all the RAM it's using (the 3GS only has 256 MB of RAM, while the 4 has 512 MB of RAM). Now with the new improved "iOS 4" when you hit the home button the app stays running. I've been running into a multitude of slow downs, and sure enough when I hit the home button twice to bring up the list of all the apps running that I can swap too, their all there. If I shut them all down that way (hold down the app until the little X button shows up), my phone returns back to normal speed.

Will try this ASAP, thanks!

SO, we should give Apple a break for not adequately testing "a major OS release"?

I agree for minor edge conditions - even broad field testing won't catch all of the combinations.

But to release on OS upgrade that causes widespread problems on a class of widely deployed hardware - that is really not forgiveable.

ios 4 sucks

I tried the beta, but hoped the optimized release would work better. Not at all. No problems with stability, but it's so slow. It would be like running Windows Xp with 256MB of RAM. I press an icon and have to wait perhaps a minute for the phone to respond. If I could easily downgrade, I would do so. I would suggest anyone with an iphone3g to NOT upgrade.

Yeah the 3G should not have the new OS. It's pretty terrible. I just wanted to hold out until the next phone. Apple should at least give us a downgrade option. Now I gotta hack it and restart, etc. Waste of my time.
