Apple burned their bridges hardcore with the dock connector change. I dont see another car having a docking-style connection method ever again.
If they are going to try to pull this off the only way i see it happening is an airplay-style integration into the car's entertainment system, or possibly bluetooth.

Apple is simply initiating a standard, suffering the pain to persuade the car companies of a new idea, but then only to make it finally something mainly for the market dominator — Android. 10 years from no, this will be pure standard for all cars, as long as your have an Android phone, while at the same time only 30-50% of the cars support iOS as well.

Sources have described this as a feature akin to a video-out or mirrored display representation of the iPhone’s Maps app onto the bigger screens included with most modern vehicles.

And you thought AirPlay was just for Apple TV.

10 years from now, Android will be just a set of APIs and system libraries.
It will be like Linux: hopelessly fragmented, and buried under proprietary GUIs.
And in 10 years, hardware might finally be fast enough to run those GUIs smoothly.

How's that? Most cars that have iPod connectivity do so via a plain old USB socket in the car. You then use either the Apple cable or one supplied by the car manufacturer depending on the system.

For example my '07 335i used a proprietary cable that had USB on one side going into the car and a dock connector on the other side going to the device. My '11 335i used the regular Apple cable (either the dock connector or the Lightning depending on device).

Also keep in mind manufacturers like BMW have exclusive cradles for smartphone, customized to a specific model. So buy a new phone you need a new dock if you want the extra features the dock offers.

The fact that it remained unchanged for as long as it did is what amazed me.

I disagree with the notion that many seem to have that Apple changed this connection so they could sell more accessories. Being compatible with tons of existing devices is obviously to their benefit; much more so than selling a few extra cables would be. The switch was necessary, came at the right time, and is quite clearly a better connector.

They've got to move forward at some point. The old dock connector was far too large at came at the expense of not being able to have the headphone jack and improved speak/microphone ports on the bottom of the phone.

I haven't read all of the other comments, but that is kind of a dumb picture to use. That is a 5-series with Nav. Why in the world would someone put that ugly iPhone holder right there? They wouldn't!

That isn't a M3. The dash would have a hump if it was a 3-series/M3.

I would definitely trust apples apps vs BMWs own maps. Most car maps are waay worse if you haven't noticed.

Have you used and lived with the maps in a BMW or just talking about something you really don't know. The Nav in the BMW is fine.

And why not? I'm sure the iPhone does one or two things the nav does not.

BMW's telematics is horrible... always has been. It typically lags 4 years behind current technology and voice control is a joke. A big unfunny frustrating joke kind of like an Andrew Dice Clay or Howie Mandel show.

But I'm not sure Siri or Maps (it's current iteration) will be an improvement. Tough one. But BMW using Apple is a step in the better direction.

Have you ever owned a BMW with NAV? I hope so since you are talking about it like you are.

Wow, you're just unbelievable. 3-4 years? How come? The old 30-pin connector lasted 10 years and then you can get an adapter to the new one.

The 30 pin dock connector lasted a decade and when Apple announced the Lighting connector they called it the connector for the next decade, so I have no idea where this 3-4 year idea comes from.

New hardware not working with old decks isn't a problem with the new hardware, it's a problem with old decks. They aren't designed to move forward with newer hardware. They are designed to work at the time of sale, and then are neglected afterwards.

huh? the 30-pin doc was in service for what, 10 or 12 years?

or you can use an adapter?

you can buy 10 year old cars with 10 year old GPS navigation in them right now. That's what it will be - nothing different.

It took 10+ years before they changed the connector for the iPod/iPad. Are they supposed to use the same one for 20+? 50+?

You're at the mercy of Apple not making ANY design changes down the line that would render the phone incompatible with your car. Be it physical design changes, iOS changes etc etc. At least with the old GPS it's built into the car and will function (with outdated maps) indefinitely. This is relying on a external device that changes once a year, with the possibility of the new change breaking functionality.

What if in two generations Apple decides to eliminate the port entirely and do everything wirelessly? What if the phone becomes so big/small/wide/narrow it will no longer fit in the holder?

I mean it could be a simple fix (IE you need to take it to the dealership for a software upgrade) - but if the manufacturer is unwilling to make the change or goes under you're screwed.

To many iffs is my point. It's good in concept but at some point you will either have to keep the same phone, refuse a iOS upgrade, or upgrade your car to maintain functionality.

You know I don't believe that's an M 3. It appears that it might be an E90 with the M Sport Package?

The M line are manual transmission-this one is an automatic.

It's a BMW F10 5 Series equipped with M Sport Package. The manual transmission is optional at no charge.

The Microsoft Sync unit in my 2012 Ford truck is awful to the point where I would be astounded if something like this wasn't at least a slight improvement.

Really? I have a 2012 Edge and my Sync works great. I do have a Nokia 920 running WinPhone 8 though. I connect through Bluetooth (connects automatically when I get in), it reads my texts to me, answers my calls, etc all while my phone is in my purse. And the built-in mapping works flawlessly. There is an update, have you installd it?

I wish! The thing even drops my device while connected via USB! It works with bluetooth fairly well. Anytime I the vehicle on or off it completely drops all connections and I have to reconnect manually. How new is the update you downloaded?

Perhaps it does have something to do with running WinPhone 8.

I bet a stock Apple system would be the same with an iPhone.

Id rather have something like android installed on all the cars so you could download whatever apps you wanted and people could make apps to link to ios and other smart phones.

no way would I want android installed on anything in my car.

This is a mobile operating system (barely) and I surely don't need my console software obsolete as soon as I drive off the lot.

It's an F10 with m sport. M line do indeed come in automatic. Manual M5 were created purely for the American market - sold elsewhere though. Its weird but there's this belief in America where manual is equated with performance, maybe it's because the vast majority of cars are autos unlike Europe. The dual clutch transmission is the better option in these cars though.

And if widgets was the big thing for iOS 7 people would say "big deal, Android had widgets long time ago". Bottom line is, there isn't anything Apple could announce that some people wouldn't think is boring/stupid/rip-off, etc. unless of course if Steve Jobs was still around. Then it would all be considered magical and revolutionary.

Widgets?

No one is looking for widgets....And how many droidians actually use those widgets?

In my experience - not many.

I'd imagine the vast majority do. Its one of the many things thats holding me back from returning to iPhone. I use power toggles, doggcatcher widget, contact widget.

Yes, 3 of them: '03 Z4, '07 335i, and my current '11 335i. Later two w/ iDrive. Why would I say BMW is behind the times in this dept if I had no experience with their NAV/iDrive system?
