I was cautiously exited when Apple TV+ came out, but after 8 months it has proven to be the lamest, half-hearted attempt at delivering a streaming media subscription model; I mean, there is barely any content. I like the quality of the shows and movies they do have, but there is just not enough of it. Apple should have acquired half a dozen studios and content PRIOR to launching Apple TV... why they continue to balk at doing so boggles the mind. Rant over.

There is SO much content out there. People might flock to Apple content for a while, because it is a novelty at first, but they better have better content than they have offered if they want to be a true success and not a prestigious money pit.

My goal after my free subscription expires is to renew Apple TV+ once a year for a month to catch up on 2 shows that I like and see couple movies. ATV+ has nothing to keep me subscribing on a monthly basis.

Yeah, makes sense. I waited until the very last day I could activate the free 1 year subscription they included with my last Mac purchase, because I knew it didn't have a lot of content and figured the longer I stalled the sign-up, the more a chance I'd actually watch some things on it while I had the active subscription.

So far, it's been pretty worthless. I tried to watch "Central Park", since I liked Bob's Burgers, but couldn't get into that "cartoon as a musical" thing, plus how similar the voices and characters seemed to BB. "For All Mankind" was pretty well done, but it didn't capture my attention after just watching episode 1 to get the idea what it was all about. Felt like a lot of effort put into a storyline that just didn't grip me. (Not a fan of "alternative timeline" fiction in the first place. I know what really took place so find it hard to suspend disbelief to accept a whole movie or series of shows trying to make up a different version of history.) Not much else on there was my kind of show at all.

Based on what i’ve seen and felt. Apple is building certain feeling and emotion with the service and their content follow that same feeling. it’s interesting to see where this goes and develop.

I want to see this based on Hanks' performance in Saving Private Ryan. I hope it's good!

lol this is noooooo saving private Ryan. It’s 1.5 hours of Tom Hanks yelling out numbers and change direction orders. That’s it. I had to watch it across four sittings just to get through it.

do you know what? After watching this movie I have to get it out of my head. So I’m gonna go watch a good movie about World War II called saving Private Ryan.

A blockbuster is a blockbuster. Whether you liked it or hated it isn’t really relevant.
My point is Apple needs to go bigger than just pick a blockbuster here and there and hope people sign up. One movie won't change everything.

Curious what you define as a blockbuster?

Greyhound is NOT a blockbuster movie !

Far from it !

It is a good war movie that tells a certain, important story !

It got ALOT of eyeballs on it because many have Apple TV + for FREE right now (me included), & because of the 100-year virus pandemic !

If AAPL makes decisions based-upon Greyhound, they are Fools, BIG time !
Apple (and everyone else) aren’t making decisions based on one movie. They are making decisions based upon the efficacy of streaming distribution vs. theatrical distribution. Investors are looking at the next quarter for services revenue and theaters just postponed reopening once again so everyone is trying to figure out if they should go all in on streaming or just dip their toe into streaming revenue models.

Ever since streaming music began, they’ve classified hits differently than traditional distribution. That is why even though we do not have exact numbers, Apple (and others) are trying to reclassify what blockbuster is in terms of viewers and revenue. This reclassification will not go away once the pandemic numbers eventually subside so it’s important for Apple to get ahead of it now.

Do you really think they plan to stop at one blockbuster? That’s like Apple Music stopping at one exclusive artist. If Apple makes the right picks, Apple TV will become the default place to go for high quality feature and award winning films. This movie was a good start and based on my anecdotal observations, it got a few people to sign up (and pay) for the service that would not have otherwise.

I haven't seen it but have spoken to 3 people who have...they all thought the movie had a stupid and pointless storyline.
It's a fictionalized account of historical incidents. Apparently those three people think history is stupid and pointless. Maybe they're right.

Waiting to see if Apple TV plus offers free viewing with ads.
Apple will not be doing ad supported TV. They don’t need ad revenue and it looks bad for a company that is so adamant about privacy to support advertisers in that manner.

You should happy with Netflix and their spray and pray strategy of releasing a new show everyday. I used to enjoy that but it requires too much time sifting through junk.

Apple is building a streaming service similar to Disney or HBO, not Netflix or Amazon.

Haven't watched it, is it that good? We struggle finding really good movies lately to be honest.
It’s great if you like dark, naval war strategy pictures with minimal character development. I’ve seen enough Saving Private Ryan WWII spectacles so it was actually refreshing to me.

Greyhound is a great piece of content on TV+. I don’t see how Apple is going to make the math work on a five dollar a month service that they are going to spend literally $1 billion on

Anyone else have a reaction when they read blockbuster movies as “Blockbuster Movies”, they immediately go to Blockbuster Video?

No? Maybe it’s just me...

Easy, they put it on tens of millions of devices, like they did with music.

The business model behind TV+ has always been to lure people into the TV app and hope they purchase additional iTunes content or subscribe to channels after they are done watching the original content.

That said, I don't think any video streaming service has been profitable, not even Netflix, and certainly not Disney. It may well be that Apple can afford to subsidise it because they believe it adds value to the ecosystem and keeps users loyal to their platform.

I don’t have a personal definition of a blockbuster. It’s an industry term that refers to the number of people who go watch the movie and how much money it brings in. A really crappy movie can still be a blockbuster.

+1. Netflix has become so horrible lately - throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks, that I’m seriously thinking of canceling my subscription.

Netflix has been quite hit and miss for me. I went a few months without watching anything on the platform, then discovered a bunch of shows to binge on. Just finished Cursed (the King Arthur adaptation) and that Charlize Theron movie, now watching a couple of anime series (no game no life, asterisk war), Japanese dramas (BG, lawyer X) and Norseman.

I think Netflix still offers the best value for money, but it’s sometimes a challenge finding something worth my while to watch.

I like the production values for TV+ but sometimes find them too Americanised for my tastes, in that the messaging such as racism, metoo and inequality seem to fall a little for me as I don’t live in the US and it’s not as big an issue here.

I think TV+ will likely see more success in the US than other parts of the world.

Begun the war for our time and attention have.

Those two Netflix options (Cursed & Theron’s movie) were suggested for me so maybe I’ll see what they’re all about seeing as you liked then.

The issue is that so much of American television has been captured by blatant storylines that are over explained. This movie, despite its action heavy emphasis, is actually a very nuanced examination of the trials of leader ship at sea during the war, I have watched it three times and with each time have a greater appreciation for the numerous subtleties in the dialogue and character relationships on board ship.
