Not going to happen. Apple wants to push iOS devices more than Macs. Still, it would be really nice.

While I think Apple sees this as the future, keep in mind that there is a big question mark over the future of the Microsoft/Intel alliance considering huge change that is Windows 8 and possibly ultrabooks not quite taking off, esp in light of Apple's dominance in the supply chain.

Apple still holds a relatively small marketshare in the PC area, there's big room for expansion if MS and Intel punts.

I would not mind a cheaper $800 price point MBA.. even if it was no longer aluminum and made with white polycarbonate, 64GB, as long as I had an option to spec the ram at 4gigs.. I'd buy it!!!!

All these other company's had no idea what an 'ultrabook' was, nor intel of an 'ultrabook market' until Apple brought out the first Air. Okay, Apple wasn't first and other company's made ultra book like laptops before Apple but did they get it right, did they sell well?

And all these years go by and these company's still can't get it right, even with MacBook Air prototypes to copy from, lol.

So, Intel's solution is cheap ultrabooks for the masses ... cheap is the opposite of quality and customer satisfaction ... sounds like an enslaut of junk on the way.

I hope the upcoming Lenovo X1 goes all out in quality, if anyone does it will be them, unless they're trying too hard to sell at a low price.

A $799 MacBook Air not only destroys the ultrabook market completely, but destroys the Surface Pro too. Genius. :apple:

The problem is if the Windows OEMs go all out on quality they will have to sell at a loss.

i think apple has finally realized that not everyone wants/can to pay $1000+ for a laptop. ive wanted a mac for a long time but i just couldn't afford. i was only able to afford the macbook i got now because of my new job. i think OSx is a great operating system but not many can afford it.

Well, considering even Apple's attempt at the form factor didn't sell well for 3 whole model iterations, can you blame them ? The market just wasn't ready. The parts suppliers couldn't make good enough margins on the parts, so the prices were in the premium bracket and the performance just wasn't there because of thermal considerations.

Apple faced these same issues after lifting the concept off Sony and they failed to make a significant dent in the market with the Rev A., B. and C. MacBook Air.

So no, it's just that 2010-2011 and the new Intel parts were perfect for this sort of form factor. It's not that Apple showed everybody how it's done, it's that the suppliers finally were able to produce the required parts at low enough cost for everyone to jump in.

But of course, some people just want to think Apple comes up with all the right ideas and never fail. The MacBook Air is not one of those times though.

Why would they have to sell at a loss? There are great pc laptops out there. Ever seen enterprise grade dell latitudes? Every bit as good as an apple laptop rdown to the magnisuim case, .

Look at the dell rugged books, you can run them over with a small car or throw them off a 2 story building ;) try that with a MacBook air ;)

A 799 macbook won't kill the surface pro, I doubt most people interested in a surface pro weren't interested in a mac to start with
