Have to respectfully disagree. There's a reason Apple pulled out of trade shows and the like...

And besides, why would they want to spend time on the muck and the mire with the companies you listed?

Is Apple a little on the high-horse? Perhaps. But they deserve to be. Their products are still the most original (stop crying about the smaller companies whose tech they purchased), smoothest operating, most user friendly, and best designed.

I don't know. This wasn't a trade show it was a design conference. It was a bit jarring to see Google, Microsoft and Samsung sponsoring a design conference but not Apple. The narrative out there is Apple is no longer innovative, that other companies are matching it on the design front (see all the good tech press Google and Microsoft have received lately). I just don't see Apple doing anything to change this narrative. What worked for them in the past when Steve was still around isn't working any more. I think Apple needs to shake things up a bit.

Am I the only one that doesn't see this as a positive thing?..

I agree, not a positive thing based on what I want Apple to be.

Call me nostalgic but I wish Apple were more like it was around 2005-2007. I appreciate their new products, but I liked the size, the intimacy, the excitement, and the purpose behind the company back then.

Times change, companies adapt and grow. But this hiring is a step away from the Apple I loved 7 years ago. I'm still a fan, but wish things could be more like they were.

More != always mean better.

Designers are very opinionated, see what happened with Scott Forstall. The guy was so stubborn that he lead a multibillion dollar company down a laughable path. Apple will be ok if they have a handful of open-minded and creative people leading their design teams.

Yup, as long as the final decision makers are on point. The more ideas, the better, IMO.

More workers with distinctive view. Let see how management reacts to it. No matter how smart or brilliant the ideas are, it all comes down to management.

Thankfully Apple is in a position to be highly selective. Even adding that many more people to their creative design team shouldn't water down the company.

....

Am I the only one that doesn't see this as a positive thing?..

people sometimes.... gaaaah.

they're just hiring new market designers not to rely as much on outside personnel as they usually do.

simples as that.

Isn't hiring AFTER designing a new iPhone a bit worrying?:D

Would you suggest that Apple should stop any hiring after designing the iPhone 5s? In that case, shouldn't they have stopped hiring after designing the iPhone 5? And after designing the iPhone 4? The logical consequence is that Apple should still be selling the Wozniak designed Apple 1 computer.

Spelling suggestions

I am a busy writer. I'd be delighted if Apple would simply improve the suggestions OS X gives for misspelled words from "Poor" to "Barely Adequate."

About a third the time, OS X has no right suggestion for misspelled words. I enter that same misspelling in a Google search and about 95% of the time, Google's 'did you mean' gets the spelling right.

That's wastes a lot of time and it's one heck of a lot more important than anything an Apple ad might say.

I have to agree with this to a point. One of the problems the Disney company faced after Walt's death was that everyone ran around trying to do what "Walt would have wanted". Creativity stagnated, and the company almost folded because of it....

Now they base all their decisions on benefitting their shareholders and that's pushing their company in the wrong direction.

I just hope Apple learns from Disney's mistakes and continues to "Think Different". Or at least start to again....

And I'm REALLY hoping the new Mac Pro doesn't go the way of the Cube...

I'd imagine it will be extremely difficult to get this position at Apple. You almost need to have won a design award to even be given a chance. Competition for these roles will be tough.

I see no need for this. In my opinion Apples ad's are some of the best in design and message. So many ads you've no idea what they are on about but Apples always have their product front and centre.

In fact most companies now try to emulate the style used by Apple. To go away from the warm, clean minimalistic design heavily inspired by J.I and his design team would be a mistake.

Also this bit about designers not wanting to work with Apple due to distance from the ad companies area of San Fran is total rubbish and if true shows how lazy designers are to not travel an hour to work with one of the worlds biggest companies and have possibly your work seen by millions and possibly inspire a generation. Who wouldn't want that.

I personally think Apple needs to really start focusing on their brand, so this could potentially be good. Not necessarily because of their own doing, more so a victim of their own success. Apple has become SO successful, SO popular, that they've become the target of endless sensationalism. They really need to get the brand image and reputation back in perspective.

I don't quite know how they can do that, without the sensationalism once again attacking. But thats why they need to hire some smart people ;). Its kind of sad, but American society just loves to tear down their biggest accomplishments.

It just bewilders me. The most successful company on Earth, the most envied, the most copied, is a company born in America. And yet Americans are the most hostile towards the company. I'm perplexed that it isn't a source of pride for America, rather than attacks. Look at South Korea, they're PROUD of Samsung. Whether or not they should be is a different story ;). But at least they look at Samsung and are very proud of the companies position. Americans on the other hand....yea we have a society that loves to root for underdogs and destroy Goliath. I guess thats why tabloids and people like TMZ can be successful here

I think Mac Pro will be fine, its a fantastic design and allows great access and usability. Some haters will laugh at the design calling it a bin hut a normal tower is just a metal box with stuff crammed inside to fit. The Mac is designed that everything has its place allowing the staggering size difference.

Fact is Steve could sell anything. Steve doesn't exist anymore and Jony has no interest in being on stage so we're stuck with Tim and Phil. And while Phil is fine on stage introducing stuff he doesn't make you want it the way Steve did. I think to an extent Jony does in the videos (check twitter sometime after a keynote) but its not the same as being on stage introducing a new product. And Tim isn't much better. So I think shaking things up in terms of marketing/advertising is a good thing. Maybe someone other than Phil needs to be in charge.

I'm not sure who is running Apple branding and PR right now but they suck at it. One case in point: IDSA (Industrial Design Society of America) held its annual conference this year in August.

Has Apple shown up at such conferences in the past?

I think this article is about advertising, not iOS or hardware designers.

This. Plus websites, tutorials, etc.

The report notes that Apple plans to continue working with its outside ad agency partners, but that it is boosting its internal team to help with such website design, video tutorials, and more.

I just saw an article today from CBS News about why people might not be interested in the iPhones. I don't remember them writing a similar piece before the Galaxy S4 or Note 3 was announced. Do a Google news search on Apple right now and you'll see more negative than positive headlines. I'm not sure Apple can continue to ignore the noise as eventually perception starts to turn into reality and the general consumer perception of Apple goes from positive to negative. I think this is a big deal and hopefully something Cook is looking to address.
