Everybody pays the same taxes in India. Apple after sales support is missing from most of the cities and towns in India. Contrast this with Samsung which has a authorized service center in almost every town of the country. Apple's products are very good which is the reason they are selling more and more macbooks every quarter . Even though the MacBook is much more expensive than the latest Dell, people still buy them. Their se phone model is sold at the lower end of the market at 18-20k. Compare this with the budget Samsung selling for 10-12k. The next Apple model is at 50k. Maybe they should have a phone at 25k, 30k?

I'm curious why the article stated that Apple was paying the tariff while Samsung wasn't ?

Could only the iPhone SE be tariff free and India wants Apple to manufacture their other iPhones there (i.e. Apple is paying tariff on their other iPhones) ?

Apple only manufactures the SE in India and not other models. Yes, you're correct, Apple does pay tariffs on other models.

But I think the most important part is, Apple chose not to manufacture other phones in India. They could avoid the tariff on the other phones. This suggests to me a lack of demand for those other phones.

I don't believe the Bengaluru facility is online yet.

Edit: Disregard. Looks like they've been online with the SE for a while.

The US is the second or third most expensive place to own a smartphone in the world but obliviously ranks a lot lower in terms of average national income

It's likely given that you can afford to buy an IPhone in India in the first instance even with extra import duties overall it may well work out cheaper than the US

US like many other western countries have much higher level of average household debt than India and other countries

The easy access to loans and monthly payment plans typically in US and others encourage higher tier purchases as the difference in sales pitch is only a few dollars more per month, these attitudes to easy credit are not as prevalent elsewhere and makes outright purchase a bigger consideration

No, I don't think so... you have a little less knowledge about this topic.... You should check your facts a bit.

Most of them have no clue....but entitled to their views.

Some even suggesting to change Government so that 100,000 iPhone X buyers can get their mobiles cheaper in the country of billion voters! Some, time travel ahead to 2018 needed for those.

Some even suggesting to enact legislation like Ireland to enable Apple to sell their "premium" (innovated products from the developed country) products "cheaper" in an "underdeveloped" country !!

The funniest thing is that they probably not aware that Apple has made to look $1000 mobile a damn cheaper from other OEMs; without Apple these OEMs could never sell them at that price points!!

Apple screwed up with India about a year ago.

Tim Cook traveled to China, and kissed butt (not criticizing; that's part of the job of a CEO), which included pushing Uber aside to invest $1B in DiDi.

Around that same time period, he traveled to India and tried to sell their politicians on allowing Apple to bring used iPhones into their market. No major investments. No stores. No manufacturing jobs. Used iPhones.

The Indian government was insulted and frankly, they're in the driver's seat. Apple needs India more than they need Apple.

But there may be some corruption as well in dealing with certain aspects. Samsung & LG could somehow make it happen (most likely greasing palms of bureaucrats and dynasty political leaders). Indian democracy is so distributed and democratic that corruption money has to be shared with both sides of the political spectrum and media eats 20% of the loot to keep-off from public scrutiny.

If you get caught then you probably end up paying 20% tax on legal process in your favour!!

All pillars of democracy built on the foundation of corruption, unfortunately! I am sure this may be the case in most of the places, one way or the other.

Single SIM is the norm in 'Muerica, but in most Asian countries, dual SIM is a must.

If I may ask, why is dual SIM a necessity in Asian countries?

I live the n the U.S. I know many people, including myself, that carry one phone for work and another for personal use. Yet there are very few options for dual SIM phones in the U.S. In fact, Samsung only offers Galaxy line of phones with the single SIM option even though they make them with a dual SIM option for other countries.

This article explains it better than I can. #1 is what my wife's family in Old Country tells me is their reason for dual SIM.

There are plenty of dual SIM phones available in the US. You can even buy the dual SIM Galaxy S9 on Amazon. Apple is betting obnoxious for not giving us dual SIM. I'm using a crappy BLU dual SIM because it's cheap and among the only manufacturers who allows both dual SIM AND SD card at the same time. I don't want to hack the hybrid SIM/SD card.

In short, it's because the U.S. does not have truly competitive wireless carriers.

In Hong Kong for example, consumers can purchase pre-paid SIM cards with 2GB data + 50 local minutes for as low as US$3-5. There are dozens of MVNOs that offer cut-throat pricing. Consumers can swap SIM cards whenever their current pre-paid card runs out and keep playing.

Another advantage I find is many banks online banking when requiring OTP codes or even account notification etc only allow mobiles numbers from native countries to be used

So I can see when my wife is on holiday and spending in the UK whilst I am elsewhere using a local sim :)

IE I can monitor several accounts in real time from overseas and use a local sim at the same time as my main sim

Exactly...

I can have as many prepaid SIMs active by recharging every few months (second, third, fourth SIMs)....use them for various purposes, professional, personal (strictly family), motherside relatives, father side relatives, wife's both (father & mother) sides relatives for one SIM...

Here families are really huge, distributed and we'll connected (thanks to WhatsApp).

It's just preference fortunately costs peanuts (no monthly commitments to keep the connection active and to only receive calls), here!

I have never been a sim swapper for price :) However generally there is little advantage in many countries being post paid outside of some minor convenience of not having to top up, but this is outweighed by not having to pay for your monthly subscription for data whilst on holiday for example

Even some of the WiFi plans that are pay as you go are great for extended visits opposed to signing up for a yearly plan for home use let alone picking up a sim card for free in any sweet shop with pre paid credit and plans

It really annoyed me when I did a 2 year stay in the US the hoops and hurdles you had to jump to try and get a basic plan and unlocked phone for my wife the way it was structured made it difficult including paying for a sim and basic sms to be enabled, but I think it is slightly better now

These "Robot phones" you speak of, have better battery life and performance than the best iPhone in existence, and have been this way for quite some time.... No need to get super defensive about Apple's bad product designs. This is why i put my money into products that aren't gonna be throttled or become a brick in a few months.

The Essential PH-1 is the only robot phone that has ever lasted a day on a single charge. It was uncomfortably low at the end of the day, but it did make the day.

Every Plus iPhone I’ve used and my X make a day with ease, often with 30-40% or more battery life left.

The only thing becoming bricks in a few months are robot phones outside of Google and Essential’s, since they’re the only ones you get updates on.

Not sure what you were doing, but anyone with common sense knows that Android phones destroy the iToy in battery life. There is no debating this, and has been this way for the longest.

Also there is a really good thread about the difference between iToy and Android updates. You should probably learn a thing or two in that regard, as you don't seem to realize that Android phones have more features and don't need OS updates, for it's apps up be updated.

What does that mean? It means that the apps can all be updated, without an OS update. For instance, imagine having updated apps and features, without having to update to the shoodiest OS ever - iOS 11. Well, you can't. While Android users can. Get it? Hopefully you do, as you don't seem to knowledgeable about how Android's work, or why they are superior to the trash iToy.

I’m sure of what I’m doing. It’s called using the phone. Without having to change my habits so I don’t have to plug in at lunch time. Over in robot land, doing things like rooting, ROMing, Greenifying, changing CPU governors, voltages, etc, all exist because the battery life is terrible. Prior to the PH-1, I refused to even look at a phone with less than a 3500mah battery because I knew there would be no chance it’d last a day.

You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. Even without betas, we’ve gotten what, thirteen updates to iOS 11 since launch? Outside of Google and Essential, find me an OEM that gets at least security updates within a week of Google pushing them. You can’t, because it doesn’t exist within the fragmented world that Google created.

Features that android has that iOS doesn’t? Like what, system-level image compression that wrecks anything you upload to social media? Or maybe you mean never getting a new version of the OS? Wait, maybe you’re talking about apps that are actually just bitcoin miners. Yeah, those are great features that I’m dying to get.

You do have a point with regards to splitting out system apps from the os for updates. But that’s not worth trading battery life, security, or privacy for. Especially since again, we’ve gotten a ton of updates just on this version of iOS.

So, why exactly are you here? This is a site and forum that focuses on Apple products. Why not go over to one of the cesspools like Android Authority or Android Police if you have such a superiority complex when it comes to the iToys you’re obviously so jealous of?

Yawns, it doesn't seem you know much of what you are speaking on still. Point is, Android phones destroy iToy in battery life. There is just no way to deny this with hundreds of comparisons all over the net. Only someone in denial would believe otherwise. But hey, that is fine if you choose to.

Security on the other hand.... How often do you hear about exploits within the Android scene? I mean, have you actually heard of anyone having their data compromised? If anything, it seems like this actually happens to the iToys. There have been so many exploits and bugs, or even ways to gain root without even entering a password, shutting down iToys due to a character bug? Like really? Lol

I'm sorry, but I have used several devices, which is where i base my decision from. There are too many limitations, not the best hardware, and the worst software that takes places on iToys. It's about time they make a good product. Imac, itoy, homepod have all been subpar, if even, after jobs era.

I understand, but Apple is a big boy, and I'm sure they've faced similar challenges over the last two decades, as they went from a largely American company to a global juggernaut. Plus, while I'm sure Apple has plans to provide devices and services to less wealthy consumers, it always helps to have pressure to keep you on track. India is providing that pressure and in the end, we all win. I'm rooting for both Apple and India.

We Indians normally keep dual SIM and use one SIM of large carrier like airtel or Vodafone as primary SIM which is linked to everything from banks to official work and is also given to friends and relatives but has expensive tariff plans and get a 2nd SIM of that operator who gives us cheapest tariff. After a month or 2 if the 2nd SIM operator stops providing cheap tariff then we just replace 2nd SIM with another operator who provides cheap tariff at that time. This way People can still reach us on our primary number and we also get benefit from cheapest tariff of secondary SIM carrier and thanks to dual SIM phone we don't need to buy 2 mobile phone.

For Example when a new 4G only carrier Jio launched 2 years back they provided free access to 4G data(4GB per day)+ free unlimited call+ free SMS for almost a full year so we got that Jio SIM and kept it in 2nd Slot and access that service without paying anything. So basically we did not pay anything to any operator(neither primary carrier nor Jio) for a full year. Getting a new SIM card is free of cost and carrier also does not disconnect connection if you don't pay for few months and use only for free incoming. As a result getting a dual SIM phone is a must in India

Throttling CPUs without saying...
It has really hurt Apple’s reputation here in China.
Chinese people won’t forget, nor should people in other countries.
Do you write for a news organisation?

Apple charges for its software... not its hardware... the biggest turnoff is when, even after the lowest growth rate in recent years how apple is able to make more than 50% of mobile market profits...

the apple products are clearly overpriced and they sell ultra premium prices...
Clearly

I use dual SIM because I used to have a 3g phone and all my contacts have that number. But times have moved on and a 4g network is much cheaper than a 3g one. So i am stuck with two sims: the 3g one with free incoming calls. And the 4g one with 30Gb free data a month with free incoming and outgoing calls. The old 3g operator went out of business and merged with another company, so I cannot transfer the number to my new 4g network. So i keep two sims for now. Of course I could keep a feature phone for the 3g network and a smart phone for the 4g. I could...
