Is adding a 3rd size (6.1") as the 2018 affordable iPhone a reasonable choice for the customer?

  • Yeah, introducing a 3rd iPhone size for a more affordable price point is totally reasonable for me

I’ll be baffled if they do not include 3D Touch with the LCD iPhone. It’s like Apple is going out of their way to fracture the consistent user experience across devices/lines.

That's the thing.

I have my X anyway, so I won't need a new phone, but if I hadn't:
- Same CPU as the other ones
- 3 GB of RAM
- No wireless charging/glass back (actually a pro argument for me)
- Same camera as the other ones, just without the (for my taste quite useless) second cam
- IPS

You wouldn't give up much and I certainly wouldn't pay 300 to 350€ more just for OLED, a second camera and a less durable back.

This phone would be a great option and stur many people away from the expensive X lineup, so they probably felt they had to castrate it artificially.

Taking away 3D Touch is a deal breaker for me, because it would most likely mean taking away the Taptic Engine as well and I really like it's subtile feedback, how it feels when setting the time for an alarm etc.
Not to forget the 3D Touch cursor for editing text.

Okay, this are just rumors, it could have 3D Touch. But realistically... the rumors about upcoming releases have generally been true for the last few years.

I’m still positive that Apple might launch an SE2 in the spring and then shift their focus to the larger iPhones in the fall. Or, they were retain the iPhone SE for at least another year in their lineup.

I think we would have heard something by now.

Either from case manufacturers or other leaks. At this point, I would put the probability of an SE2 launch this year at under 10%.

Apple launched the gesture-based iPhone X at the same time as iPhone 8.

The lack of 3D Touch is peanuts in comparison.

Apple also made abundantly clear the iPhone X was something new and different. 3D Touch has been here awhile.

im sure the majority of people (whom apple appeals/markets to) could careless about the actual inches of a phone and instead care about the + or the "regular" sized ones. Apple producing a larger LCD option in conjunction with a larger OLED option seems kind of dumb to me. I feel that the majority of people will opt for the LCD just for price sake and the ability to get the "new" technology. def will limit the amount of the "reg" sized OLED X and the + sized LCD X. Just my thoughts.

Normally I would agree, but I can see this happening since 3D-touch isn’t a must-have feature, and the audience that this iPhone will target probably won’t care.

Technically, we have heard for some unreliable sources stating we would see a refresh from March to June, but The most reliable source being Ming Kuo stated there would not be an iPhone SE 2 refresh in 2018 due to Apple focusing their resources on The 6.1/5.8/6.5 iPhones.

Personally, I’m completely undecided if Apple will or will not update the SE at all. If they do update it, I believe it would be between March and at the latest WWDC 2018. I don’t think Apple will update the SE during the timeframe with the announcement of the Fall 2018 iPhones. If Apple does not update the iPhone SE, I do believe they will retain the current SE in their lineup for one more year.

Part of the problem is Apple doesn’t market 3D Touch and the consumer doesn’t even know it exists and is likely confused how the feature specifically works and how it can be used to their advantage. Which is unfortunate, because 3D Touch really is a convenience to have, but much like Live Photos, Apple doesn’t market that either.

What would you say are the main iPhone features Apple promotes these days, in your country?

Down here, they don't seem to focus on anything specific. They don't really need to. Billboards tend to just have the iPhone itself or photos "shot on iPhone" & advertisements stick to the camera also.

The major feature promoted across the iPhone lineup is the camera. I can only imagine what Apple spends in marketing in terms of commercials, billboards, posters through carriers, etc. I just think it’s unfortunate when they bring interesting features along like 3D Touch and life photos, but then they don’t market those features anything past the keynote, and maybe a possible commercial. Live Photo’s was recently updated, but there is hardly any marketing for it and its functionality. I find many other iPhone users commenting that they don’t even know it 3D Touch does and What its purpose is, because Apple does not market it.

Not getting it. My own careful scientific deductions lead me to the conclusion that 16:9 was better than the new surf board.

Other than that Tim can put a few million devices on the market, I wouldn't know how that impacts me if I don't decide to buy them. *shrugs*

Well, the SE AFAIK has sold well, I think introducing another big-screen phone without providing a decent small-size phone would freak out a lot of customers. I hope this/next year they are going to remove the X, and make 2 phones with the same specs/design of the X in the form factor of the actual 4.7in and 5.5in devices.

I contradicted myself....seems as if the specific feature Apple promotes in both our countries is the camera.

It's a funny one in the respect that, whilst a very good camera, it's not class leading & hasn't been for a while. & now with the revamped S9 camera, along with the Pixel 2, the iPhone camera may drop another rung on the ladder.

But, it's still good enough, & despite it not being #1, Apple don't need to promote much iPhone-wise...got to hand it to them after all this time....quality product sells itself.
