Have people noticed that the price reductions make sure that (excluding Applecare) that fully speced out (with only 512 not 1 gig ram) Mac Minis come under $1000 US. And in other configs chucking in a gig of ram and little else, keeps the price under $1000 US as well.

If the Mac mini now comes with a UJ-835 model Superdrive then it can write to DVD-R at 8x (unless Apple crippled it).

Check it out here:
http://www.dfwdepot.com/osc/product_info.php?products_id=139

Note that that is a different model number than the number people who have received Minis are reporting. They are reporting the model number as UJ-835-F.

My guess would be that since the model numbers are so close, the Minis drives are probably firmware crippled.

Another reason: if you have more than one other Mac: Then Tiger would be $200 for a family pack upgrade whether or not you buy the mini.

Who said you had to buy more than one copy? Just install it on all of your Macs...who gives a *****!

The iMac also got the price drop in the gig DIMM's of ram.
Would this mean that there will be price drops to the PM/PB also

Bring it on!! about time they dropped the price on the PowerMacs!!

aussie_geek.

ps - 10:30am here in au - no sign of price drops on mini's here.

I know I am repeating this.....

Apple is making good on the price adjustment for people who already have orders...

Has apple reduced the prices in countries other than the us?

( I damned well hope so ).
From other posts in this thread it seems that the US and the UK have seen price reductions. The rest of the EU and Norway has not. As for other countries I don't know.

Price has dropped in Canada. I'm now saving about $50 on a 1.42G/512/80/AP+BT/SD model.

I wish someone who has alrady ordered a Mini would call up Apple, and as to speak to an engineer...that's the only way we can put the Superdrive controversy to bed. Asking a customer rep is likely to be useless...they're just gonna read you what they find on the website, which at this point seems to vary depending on if you are building it in the BTO section, or looking at the tech specs.

UK main store (not education) has not reduced prices yet...

Lowering Prices Means Sales in Slump?

I don't think so either...
With all of the sudden intense media attention I think it's more likely embarrassment from excessive profiteering that led to the cuts.
Apple has never had so many eyes watching them and so many critics ready to, well, criticize!

I don't think anyone's saying that the lowering is a result of a sales slump...however, I think it's more likely from nobody ordering the options that were reduced. The BT and Airport individual upgrades weren't cut, just the combo upgrade, which leads me to believe not many were ordering it with both. And obviously hardly anyone was ordering their Mini with 1GB of ram unless they were beyond clueless and didn't care about money.

I've never seen Apple make a move like this as a result of negative media comments...they just don't react this quickly normally.

yes, saving as a disc image works perfectly. i burned an iDVD project on an external fw dvd burner to a DVD+RW disc (that played fine on an old panasonic dvd player) using toast. so, unless you want that all-in-one simplicity of the internal superdrive, it is not necessary to use iDVD5. however, i think my fw burner is probably around twice the size of the mac mini...

An external case for a 5.25 inch device is about the same width as the Mini, although quite a bit (9 cm) longer. Like some, I already have an external OSX supported DVD burner but I would go for the extra simplicity if Apple offered a dual layer upgrade. As is, it seems a bit of a waste of Eurobucks considering most of us don't author DVDs on a daily basis and dual layer support is supposed to be coming soon

Security Update Available

Just downloaded a security update for anyone who is interested.

I always thought the 80gb hard drive BTO option was $50. O well good news to see price cuts! I feel bad for people that already bought....ummmm no I don't they already have their mini's.

I also got the email from Apple; apparently that means we get the same deal, although i'm not sure if that means we also get an 8x Superdrive of the old 4x.

wow apple, i am waiting for a PB or even PM or even imac update and all I get is a security patch!! grrrr!!

To reiiterate a question so popular post-MWSF...:
Where has Apple's attention to high end gone??!! Updates, gpu, speed bump, silent mod, three-button mouse, -anything!! "Ready to buy a mac." has never been a state I've been in for this long.

Cheers to the new mini owners, though, esp. OSX converts :)

Using Mac Mini on KVM with XP PC

Has anyone here hooked up their Mac Mini & a XP PC to a KVM.

I have been reading a lot of people have been having trouble with the Belkin KVM not displaying the video properly from the Mac Mini.

If anyone is using a KVM to run a Mac Mini & Win XP PC & had good luck please let me know the brand of the KVM your using.

My goal is to use my existing IBM Keyboard, Logitech Mouse & NEC LCD “17” monitor hooked up to a KVM that will run my XP PC & Mac Mini.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

If you already have your mini...

Not sure if anybody just outright said this because I read through most of the posts, but I didn't read the last couple pages... Apple *will* refund the difference in price between your purchase price and the new prices if you already have your Mini. You must talk to them within 14 days of it having shipped, and they will create a credit for the amount of the price difference and credit your original form of payment with it. I just called and spoke with them and in about 2 minutes, I got a $28.89 credit! Good job Apple!

I'm using a Dr. Bott USB/2VGA MoniSwitch Pro with two Sony VAIO PCs running Windows XP and a Mac mini, and it works flawlessly.

There may be a problem with the Belkin KVM switch. If you're going to buy one, make sure you can return it if it doesn't work with your particular configuration.

KVMs That work and my love for Apple

I was one of the ones in line at the Apple Store at 5:30am to get my mac mini. Earlier that week I had purchased a Belkin KVM 2 port USB with audio as well from Ebay. I hooked it up and it is working fine. I would recommend this to anyone, but I would look on Ebay first to see if I could find a deal. I love my mini, and find myself using my PC less and less often. I love Apple.

Thanks for the info. I found a local reseller that sales the Dr. Bott.
